REINCARNATION MEME

You go into a new class and you could swear you've seen your classmate before but you've never met them. You pass a bakery and the scent evokes something in you that you can't quite place. You have memories that you shouldn't have of a life you didn't live. But what if you had? What if those memories were real? Someone you meet on the street may have been your friend, family, lover. When you see them, will you remember? Will it take time for the memories to filter back or will they strike you all at once? Do you even want to remember? How are you going to deal with past joys, traumas, passions, hurts? Do you remember how you died? Does it haunt you at night? Are your relationship dynamics changed? How are you going to navigate this new life?

[The party is lovely; they always are, at the Potter's. Far more lively than the gatherings Scorpius' family hosts. There's been dinner and punch, Albus' cousins are trying to start up a parlor game, and Scorpius hasn't seen the groom-to-be in at least half an hour. Not a good look, for an engagement party.

He knows exactly where to find him, though.

He pardons himself for a breath of fresh air, ducks off the garden path to a tree in the corner of the yard. It takes more out of him to climb it now than when he was a child, but he makes it up, and there's Albus, sitting in his usual spot. The tree is thick with leaves this time of year, and if you know where to sit, you're virtually invisible from the path.

He takes a few seconds to catch his breath from the exertion, settling in himself.]

They'll notice you've gone soon enough, you know.

[ ooc: this is basically My Jam, and d'Eon can be reincarnated within a male form, female form, or if any form of Servant magic is involved then a form that is as malleable in physical sex and gender as possible depending on their partner. any sort of reincarnation scenario is loved but ladies for shipping. (~~the more royal the better.~~)]

[ it really is a lovely party. albus does his best to be a charming host but his heart isn't in it; appearances are important but disappearing is what he needs to keep his sanity. he knows that it's going to look awful to be gone for so long, leaving his bride-to-be to field the guests and his family, but he doesn't know what else to do.

drinking too much isn't wise, and he has to take some time to steel his nerves.

a part of him tenses when he hears someone else scaling the tree; he knows that it can only be scorpius but irrationally he's afraid he's been found out already until he sees the other young man's face. he smiles at him but it's wan, weak, vulnerable. ]

I know. I plan to be back before then, or at least soon after. Everyone's in such a good mood, I'd rather not be too dour in the face of it.

[ he's played his part well so far, but here he can say what he likes. he knows that scorpius won't tell a soul and their secrets are safe with one another. ] I just needed to clear my head.

[Scorpius smiles back, trying to be encouraging. It's surprisingly difficult. As much as they've pretended it won't, this is going to change things between them and he doesn't know exactly how yet. Only that it will.

At least they still have this. Their hiding spot, where there's no need to put on airs, and pretend things are something that they're not, or they're not something that they are.

He snags one of Albus' hands in his own, threading their fingers together and kissing the back of it.] I know. I didn't come out here to force you to come back in, silly. Only to see how you were doing.

[ it's going to change things and albus would rather run away from that, would rather go off to be what he is without worrying, but it's too late now. they can't just disappear and there's nowhere for them to hide.

he watches scorpius quietly, squeezing his hand before brushing his cheek with the side of his hand, fingers still entwined. ] I don't know how I'm doing.

[ it's quiet and honest. he doesn't know. he doesn't want to know. he breathes out, looking down at the ground beneath them. ] Tired, I think. I don't know how else to describe it.

[Scorpius leans into Albus' touch, sighing. He knows; he feels the same way.]

She's a lovely person. [It's a small consolation. This isn't a love match; it's business. It's obligation. It's standard, for people of their social standing.] It's not like everything has to change. We can still be--

[be what? There aren't words for what they are to each other.] We can still be us. We'll find ways.

She is. [ it's better than being paired with some of the other options, he knows: but still, it's not a good match even if it's through no fault of her own. she doesn't know anything about this.

hopefully she never will. ] I want to believe you. I do. [ he breathes out slow and grounding. ] What kind of life am I asking you to live? It's not fair to you to ask for so much more secrecy.

It was easier when we were younger.

I'd rather have secrecy than nothing at all. [Scorpius says firmly, clutching Albus' hand tighter.] You're not asking me anything, Albus. I'm saying, I don't want to let this go. And I'll do whatever it takes to keep it. Even if that means more secrecy.

[Scorpius inches closer, careful to keep his balance. With one hand steadying against a branch, he has to let go of Albus' hand to cup his cheek instead, leaning in to kiss him sweetly. He lingers for a moment, pressing their foreheads together as he speaks.] I can't give you up. I won't.

I'd never let you go completely. [ it's selfish of him, of both of them, but who can fault them? it isn't their doing, what's happening. this part is, clinging to one another like spoilt children, but there's no changing them.

not even for marriage.

albus returns the kiss softly, leaning into the touch and closing his eyes. he keeps them closed, lips slightly parted, before nodding there against him. ] I wish there were a better solution for us. Do you ever think about what it would be like if we could just... go somewhere? I know we talked about it before but I still think about it.

[ a breath. ] Even if I can't run anymore.
