Alternate Post-TWS - sometime after Steve catches up to Bucky

[the safehouse they've taken up is an old, forgotten HYDRA one; when they first come in, they have to peel the door open, and the dust might as well be an inch thick, with the faded wallpaper peeling in the humidity that seems to crowd this town like it means to smother it. It's in South America that Rogers finally catches up to him - or maybe he's been slowing down, wanting Rogers to find him as James continues hunting down every HYDRA cell and lab left over like he means to burn it from the Earth. And maybe....maybe he's tired of running. Steve him covered in old blood, most of it someone else's, moving through the dense undergrowth like one of the shadows. And this time, he doesn't slip away.

At first, getting James to talk is a struggle, each word seems rusty with disuse, but Steve doesn't find himself with a knife or gun aimed his way as he lets Steve draw closer and closer, until finally... PIt seems Steve's free to tag along, as long as he doesn't get in James' way. Once he's cleared out this nest, James moves on, with Steve in tow, towards the next target. Then the next. And the next after that.

Each week shows improvement, though there are days where Steve will catch James staring at him with this mix of confusion and wonder, while other days, Steve'll find himself watched with suspicion and a thread of resentment; why is he still with him, after everything he's seen? After how badly he's hurt him? He's not that kid Rogers grew up with. Not anymore. And still, he won't leave the Soldi- James' side, even when he comes out covered in blood from the last base, or when he shoots that HYDRA scientist in front of him. He doesn't understand why Rogers stays. But James finds himself gravitating back towards this man, utterly fascinated with Steve Rogers and what he can glimpse through his burned out memory.

It's the lab where Steve almost takes a bullet for him that something just... gives. When they limp their way back to the safehouse, tired, sweaty, bruised, James ends up practically shoving Steve down into the ratty old chair as soon as the door latches behind them, falling to his knees on the concrete floor with a thud. James practically scrabbles frantically at Steve's fly, leaning in with a harsh sound to press his face into one strong thigh, breathing hard as he inhales Steve's scent with something that might be fear and arousal and the heat twisting tight in his belly]
