It had been a beautiful day. There hadn’t been a cloud in sight. Both humans and the Others had worked in the garden, and many had pitched in for the bonfire tonight. There was supposed to be a meteor shower, and Ruthie had suggested they have snacks and drinks. Blankets were being laid out for watching the show, kids were running about, and people were laughing.

Meg was excited. Though she had experienced many things, she had yet to see a shooting star. And though she was having fun, it was all getting to be a little overwhelming. After a quiet word with Simon, she decided to take a brief walk to calm her racing thoughts. Skippy came along, since she could never seem to go anywhere alone. He ran ahead of her, then doubled back, sniffing at things and pouncing at shadows.

Her wanderings led her to the pony barn. Though she had no treats, Meg decided to visit them and say hello. She entered the barn and was startled when she caught sight of a shifting figure. “...Jester!” she said, sighing with relief. “You scared me.”

Who had told her that Rockaway Beach would be a great place to stargaze during the meteor shower? Karen honestly couldn’t remember. Still, she’d made the drive to Queens alone as Foggy was busy working some case and all of her friends from the Bulletin were off doing things they considered more interesting than watching some lights streaking across the sky. Tonight, it was just Karen and a macchiato in a paper cup, looking for a place to sit with her face tilted skyward.

With Matt gone, she’d been trying to occupy herself any way she could. Karen was absolutely punishing the keyboard of her laptop, writing story after story for the paper. She had been turning herself inward instead of turning to others to let it out. Watching a bunch of shooting stars sounded like a good way to take a break from overworking herself, and while she didn’t particularly feel a need to tear herself away from her job, she knew the need was there.

Still in her clothes from work, her high heels clicked on the pavement as she walked towards a bench. Already there had been a few white streaks in the sky. It was amazing how getting out of Hell’s Kitchen suddenly made the stars all the more visible, like suddenly blinders had been taken off of her eyes. There was still a fair amount of light pollution, but now in the clear, Autumn sky she could see dots of light puncturing the darkness. It was nice.

Karen took her seat on the bench next to a stranger. Somehow his features looked familiar, but she knew that he was no one she’d ever met in person. While a perfect memory was a rarity in people and Karen certainly wasn’t one of those lucky individuals blessed with one, she did have a fairly good memory for faces. His was pinging something in the back of her mind, but she couldn’t quite put a name to it. All she did was smile politely and sip at her fancy coffee.

“Here for the meteor shower?” She asked him casually. It couldn’t hurt to make small talk with a stranger, not when the whole purpose of this trip was to step outside of her own personal sphere. And maybe, just maybe, she’d remember where she had seen him before.

( the night had gone quiet, most of their team sleeping for the night. ana was supposed to be but on a mission she always had one eye open, and a few of the day's events were rattling through her head.

she lay a hand on his shoulder before sitting down, knowing that he'd have picked up her steps long before she'd gotten close. her head tipped up to the sky for a moment, and if this hadn't been a mission ana might have given herself more than those few seconds to appreciate the view of the night sky )

It's still too dangerous for them to get in. ( they had wounded and some intel that needed extracting through anyone trying to come close would be noticed before they could get close enough ) We're missing something.

Matt's never actually seen the stars. Not really. Growing up in Manhattan, even clear nights were full of light pollution from the city, and he'd seen them on TV but he and his dad never had a chance to escape New York. So, while he has a general idea of it, in his memory it's like glitter on black paper, he's never really known how calming or wonderful it can be to look at.

Huddled together at the fire pit behind the mountain cabin Danny's stolen them away to (one last fun trip before the winter kicks in), Matt rests his chin on Danny's shoulder.

"How do the stars look tonight?" he asks, nose pressed to Danny's cheek. It doesn't matter to Matt, not really, but he likes when Danny explains thing. Danny looks at everything much more differently than anyone else, and Matt's never going to get tired of it.
