Run away with me
![]() The two of you have decided to run away together. Bottom line, you've come up with that plan and you've worked up the guts and the means to do it. The most obvious source of a desire to leave together is a romance you can't have until you're gone from this place. It's like all the eloping that happened in those epics of old. How charmingly beautiful! How romantic! Who says the old ways have gone out of style? But other reasoning behind the decision could be from the serious - you both want to escape imprisonment, an oppressive atmosphere, or a miserable destiny - to the more lighthearted. Maybe an adventure is just what you need, where you'll finally get to see the world...and, slowly, fall in love. Because that's what the crux of all this is: even if the escape started out as mere convenience, you both want to stay close and work together. In the end, when you've finally run where you want to be and the danger, if any, has passed, you may find you don't want to go your separate ways.

The war seems endless, demanding more and more of the both of them until Jericho feels like a shadow, made of nothing more than exhaustion and guilt. Egil fares no better, the determination there, but the toll of it evident each time their eyes meet, and soon Jericho knows something will give, something terrible, because the price to stay in this is far too high and despite it all, they haven’t paid enough.
When it does come, it’s Egil bleeding freely in his arms, and he can’t take it. There’s no part of him that can accept an outcome where he loses the only thing that matters to him, and he feels no shame when he abandons the cause. There’s enough of a fire raging that the two of them disappearing won’t put a stop to the assault on The Factory, and even knowing that one day they’ll come for him isn’t enough to make him turn back. With Egil barely conscious, he gives him stitches in the backseat, then tucks a blanket around him and drives through the darkness, long enough that the sky begins to turn pink with the rising sun.
He stops for supplies -- medicine, bandages, liquor, loading the trunk with food and water. He forces Egil to down painkillers and water, then gives up trying to get him to eat, instead dozing off on the reclined seat with his hand resting on Egil’s arm. An hour later he’s driving again, putting more and more distance between them and the Dusk, and he doesn’t stop until the light fades and he hears Egil coming awake.
They’re in the middle of nowhere, trees surrounding them and an empty road ahead; he parks on the gravelly shoulder and turns around, eyes gritty, his back aching. ] It’s okay. I know it hurts, but you’re safe with me.

He doesn't dream.
There are broken moments where he hears the things around them, only able to lift his head for a brief second to note they've stopped somewhere -- he can hear the trunk banging shut as it reverberates through the both him and the vehicle. Egil wants to ask where they're even going, why they haven't made the rendezvous point back where they'd planned and why Larus and Rusty and Casimir weren't anywhere to be seen. Yet, he doesn't have the strength to really stay awake after that, so he continues to sleep until the jostling of his upper body stirs him into consciousness once more. Looking at Jericho feels odd when his eyes are so heavy, trying to glance from him to whatever he might be able to see out the windshield; there's nothing. His mouth feels dry, and the front of him is strangely cold before he realizes he isn't wearing a shirt and there's dried blood all over the front of him. The memory of getting shot surfaces rapidly, suddenly understanding Jericho's words a lot better.
He nods slowly. ] Where are we-- [ The words are a bit slurred, and Egil shakes his head, sucking in a sharp breath as he uses his good side to leverage himself up into an easier sitting position. ] Where are we going? What happened? [ He doesn't want to dwell on the very obvious fact between them, so he pulls at the blanket that had been tucked around him to try to drape it over his injured side; it helps to hide some of the scarring from before too, not that he's particularly self-conscious about it. He just wants Jericho to focus on other things. ] You need to rest. You should let me drive for a while.
[ Never mind that he can barely sit up on his own. ]

You need to rest. [ He doesn’t want to answer the other questions. In truth, he doesn’t know how the others are faring, though he believes in their resourcefulness and determination. He doesn’t know how Egil will react to the news that he’d simply decided to abandon the cause, either. The wound isn’t infected, just fresh, and he slowly maneuvers the two of them until Egil is resting in his lap, letting his fingers run gently through his hair as he gazes down at him. ] You were shot. I had to get you away from there. We’re out of the Dusk now -- I’ll find us somewhere safe so you can heal. [ He doesn’t mention that he has no intention of bringing him back there. ] Remember the cabin? I’ll take us somewhere like that.

Getting away doesn't mean leaving the city. We have to go back. [ But he hesitates to continue, turning despite the pain that flares up from the wound so he can get a better look at him. From this distance, he can see the exhaustion, reaching out to brush his fingertips against his cheek like it'll soothe whatever thoughts are tumbling around in his head, and by then, Egil is forcing himself to sit up, bracing a hand against his shoulder to keep it still so he can move around. ] Or call Larus. Do you have your phone? [ A strange sense of urgency is beginning to tighten in his chest. ] Maybe we could go to Baneshill, and they could meet us there. I just have to tell him that's where we're going.
[ But the effort to actually try climbing into the front of the car is too much, and he falls into the seat, breathing heavy. ]
