( they've been working around the clock for days. a massive outbreak of fear gas over the streets of gotham caused a widespread panic, one that took every crime-fighter in the city of gotham and some borrowed from nearby towns to contain. damian is no stranger to long nights and sleepless days, of course, but he is still young--running off of adrenaline and not much else while pounding in faces and getting civilians to safety takes it's toll. regardless, he doesn't let himself crash.

not until after everything is contained and bruce manages to drive them back into the manor; injuries were kept to a minimum when working to find scarecrow, release the cure, and get everyone back to normal. damian's covered in small cuts and bruises, but nothing he can't handle. and once the threat is gone? so is damian's will to keep his eyes open. he takes one step out of the car, legs wobbling after days of exertion, takes another and leans his forehead against bruce's forearm, rests most of his weight against him.

and falls asleep with both feet still planted firmly on the ground. )

[ Six months after the Accords, things aren't going quite as well as the countries who signed the damn thing hoped. There is a great deal of turmoil in the United States, pressure mounting on Congressional leaders to put out of it, if only because every minority civic organization has banded together. Protests, marches, petitions, martial law in Detroit for days after violent riots. It's something Steve hasn't seen in America in a long time. When he crashed the plane, the country was still segregated, and he slept through the 60s.

Now people are standing up for mutants, or standing against them, and he can only stay in Wakanda, loitering around Buck's cryo unit, for so long before his conscious gets the better of him. So Steve sneaks out, armed with a burner phone and card for emergencies thanks to the generosity of Wakanda's king, and makes his way home. It takes a few months, of course. There are times he has to lay low. Times he can't help himself and jumps feet first into trouble. But he eventually steps foot on United States soil half a year after being declared persona non grata.

He's not sure whether to be heartened or dismayed that California is as feisty as he remembers it from the war bond tour. From San Diego, most of his available cash gone, the man formerly known as Captain America heads north. Not quite ready to tackle New York yet. Star City seems a safe enough destination. There's another superhero team to pick up the slack of the now fractured Avengers, and rumor has it one of the Justice League members lives in the area. (Okay, more than rumor, but don't let his poetic frame of mind sink so quickly.)

The problem is that Steve's been going without more than an hour or two of sleep for days. Sure he's a super soldier, and he can go for a long time without food or water or even rest. But he's still, at his core, a regular human being, and eventually the neglect will catch up. Like right now, in a city subway car. Duffel tucked against his legs so no one can snatch it, surrounded by people going to and from the graveyard shift, Steve tells himself that it's okay to close his eyes for a minute or two.

Except a minute (or two) later, he lists quietly to one side, head braced against the shoulder of the person next to him. Sorry, Ollie. ]
