The story that Cindy's parents had perished was an unfortunate, but necessary fabrication. After all, Caius had never intended to find himself stranded on that world, on that particular plane, and he certainly hadn't meant to father a child while he was there. And an immortal, dimension-skipping warrior was hardly a suitable candidate for fatherhood. And so, when Cindy's mother died shortly after giving birth, Caius had struck a bargain with the woman's father: Cid would raise the girl, and Caius would never return.

But fate had never been especially accommodating of Caius Ballad's intentions, and he found himself thrown through a twist in the timeline, landing again in Hammerhead, with more than two decades passing in that world since his previous visit. The provocatively-clad mechanic had caught his eye immediately, distracting Caius from his plans to return to his own dimension. Their dalliance was only just beginning to turn physical when they discovered their true connection, and by then, it was too late.

From the late night shadows, Caius watched as Cid shuffled away from the service station, ambling home. Once the "closed" sign was visible, he slipped into the garage to find Cindy in what he'd come to realize was her natural habitat: working on a car. Caius smiled and leaned against its hood.

"And how is my little girl doing tonight?"
