At Another Person's Home: Who cares that you're guests at somebody's house and they can hear you through the walls? Go for it!

[ she can't quite believe that she's here. jessica jones, of all people, moving in with someone. while jess can't manage to place a label on whatever the hell she has with matthew murdock, she apparently thought this was a bright idea. well, truthfully, it was matt's plan, but it didn't take much persuasion for her to succumb.

with a low exhale, she follows him through the front entrance, her messenger bag slung over her shoulder. it's not the first time she's been in his apartment, though now it's technically theirs. ]

I can't believe I'm doing this.

[ He can't quite believe that she's here. It'd been a gradual romance, one that hadn't even been a romance at all, not with the repetitive bickering and the clashes of their contrasting personalities. But there was inevitably something that might have spawned from the easy smiles, from the magnetic glances — because Jessica Jones was moving in with him now. ]

Neither can I. [ A soft playful laugh escapes him as he shuts the door behind her. He gives a small lick to his lips as pauses before he continues, trying to keep his tone light when he asks, ]

Not having seconds thoughts, are you?

Yep. [ her retort is instinctive and sharp — meant to drive him away, but it's not the complete truth. they both know better by now. ] Hell if I know.

[ huffing an annoyed breath, jess pauses before glancing over at him. while she debates asking her next question, it slips out before she can reconsider. ]

You?

No. [ He responds without hesitation, a gentle smile perking on his lips. His answer comes easy; he's had his time to think about it long before he'd asked her at all. Mostly his hesitation had been for her sake, though he'd spent quite a long time living by himself with his secrets that the transition was a drastic one for him as well.

But Jessica knew his secrets, ones he'd knowingly shared with her and ones he never mentioned at all. She was always good at that — at knowing him, at looking into the cracks of how he functioned, at understanding him even better than he did.

Stepping in closer, his fingertips brush over her forearm, wrapping his hold lightly around the fabric of her jacket. ] I'm happy that you're here. But more importantly, are you?

[ she lets him touch her, tensing only a bit. gestures of affection still perturb her, on some level, despite all of their progress. however, she's growing more used to it, day by day. this — the prospect of moving in together, of opening herself up to another person — frightens her. it fills her with as much anxiety as it does joy. matthew has torn down most of her emotional walls, but a few remain.

there's a beat of silence after he presents his question. at times, she can't recall what happiness feels like. happiness is envisioning trish and knowing that their bond, regardless of the obstacles in their path, is unbreakable. happiness is seeing malcolm and realizing that no matter how shitty of a friend she is to him, he refuses to stray far from her side.

and most of all, happiness is standing next to matthew murdock in this moment — remembering the rush of relief that coursed through her entire frame when he returned from the dead, and how she can't imagine a life without him anymore. ]

Yeah.

[ leaning forward, she shuts her eyes and presses a soft kiss to his lips. ]

[ He's careful with her; not because she's fragile, not by any means (he'd like to hear anyone even try to say that to her), but because he knows she takes things by steps. That's how they'd even come this far, sharp insults gradually softening until empty nicknames became sarcastic jabs of "Murdock", eventually evolving to be an easy word that flew casually from her lips, something of an almost affection carried in her tone — something she'd never openly admit to, but he liked to believe his ears were sharp enough to hear it, or maybe he just knew her better than she thought he did.

A calm sight leaves his mouth against hers as the kiss relaxes him, easing any lingering worry that perhaps she wasn't ready.

Tucking long bangs away from her face and behind her ear, his palm lingers on her neck, fingers caressing the skin gently. His nose nudges hers in a silent appreciation before he leans in for another pleasant kiss, smiling against her mouth. ]

Good. There's the benefit of getting free breakfast every morning, so I think you'll be pretty satisfied.

[ even as they part to catch their breath, she can't manage to pull away, her lips lingering near his own. when they're this close, jess can simply bask in his warmth, the sheer force of his presence keeping her tied to the ground like gravity.

nothing about this is simple for jess; even the mere possibility of commitment unsettles her beyond measure. jessica jones has considered this option with one other person in the past, and she knows all too well how that ended. still, it's different, even now. with luke, she imagined a future — normal shit. bowling. dinner and a movie. part of that hope stemmed from sincere affection, yet another part was a desperate, pathetic desire to attain penance for her transgressions against him.

but with matthew? there's no guilt lurking beneath the surface, no burden of anguish or self-loathing. they both have their own demons, yet hers never collide with his. no, instead, they diminish. even if the phantoms can't vanish completely, they abate until only the sight of him remains. being with him is as effortless as breathing, as natural as existing, and calms her in a way that no amount of alcohol ever could.

unlike with luke, she can't envision a traditional life together with him, not exactly. the only fact she's confident in is that he'll be there, wherever she is, by her side. he's a constant. perhaps that's enough.

(truthfully, she already knows it is. she knows it always will be.)

jess huffs a dry breath, finally stepping away from his grasp. her shoulders slump down, and her hands slip into the pockets of her jacket. ]
