[The cake is an epic explosion of devil's food and buttercream, a monument to the hubris of mortals that must be on the edge of a collapse yet to come, else the gods themselves would be overshadowed by its glories, a decadent monstrosity of dessert-y goodness. It also looks kinda like it has fondant plants on it, but he's frankly not nearly as good with the decorative flair as the actual baking, so it's really just vaguely green and leafy.

Of course, Taako can't own up to having gone to some sort of effort for someone else's birthday, so he's pretending to examine his nails while it levitates into its appointed place.]

Yeah so I got super bored and then I ran out of counter space so here you go or whatever.

Aww, Taako! You shouldn't have!

[ No really, you shouldn't have. He's probably diabetic or something. But you can be damn sure he's gonna eat that cake anyway. It's HIS CAKE, after all!

He grabs a knife and starts slicing up pieces. ]

How big a piece you want?

Yeah, I know.

[Sure, sometimes he gets too bogged down in his own greatness to pull off a bit, but if there's one thing Taako can do, it's a perfect deadpan.

After a moment to make sure the point has landed, he's abruptly holding out a plate.]

Start me off generous and we'll see where we go.

[He earned those delicious calories.]

[ Okay, but you say "generous" and Merle reads "half the cake." And there are other people here who will probably want a piece, so he can't do that. Mookie's going to want at least two pieces.

In the end, Merle cuts Taako a hefty helping, and lumps it over onto a paper plate to hand to him. ]

[Taako accepts the plate like he's not massively craving delicious cake and it's just, y'know, whatever, an illusion that is spoiled (if it ever worked for a moment) by immediately shoving a giant forkful into his face.

[ It was her 17th on the 1st but time is an illusion so heck it. ]

[Oh, good. For a minute, the Hero of Time, was a little worried he'd messed up with the Ocarina and ended up...elsewhen, but, it seemed he'd actually made it back to the proper Time.

Link mused that he probably really shouldn't use the Ocarina of Time for composing idle tunes. But, since Zelda was there, no real harm done, it would appear.]

Hey, Zelda, I have something for you---

[ He shouldn't, but there are also a lot of things Zelda shouldn't do but she does anyway. Composing tunes in down time isn't nearly as bad as trying to feed frogs to Heroes for the sake of experimental, physical betterment for one.

What could Link have gotten her? She turns in her chair, curious. ]

Before you tell me, may I suppose on what it could be?

[Link started slightly, the hand that was reaching for the present in his pocket freezing in place.

Oh, he'd messed up this time. Past? Future? The other future? His other Zelda had told him that road would be closed to him...

He tried to recover and smiled a bit lopsidedly.]

You can, but, I don't know if it'll hold much interest to you.

[ Pardon her for just staring, doe-eyed, at someone she doesn't know in her private study. No, that's not right. Not entirely, anyway. For some reason, she's not frightened. Somehow, she does know him.

And he knows her. Of her?

Goddesses but he could be Link, couldn't he! Just with a new haircut. And a hat. Green suits him quite well, actually. ]

Allow me to inform you, then, that I hold great interest in what you might have.

[Odd that the expression on her face almost perfectly mirrored Zelda's expression when he had first met her when they were both children.

She had later told him stories of the previous heroes and princesses, and suggested it might be a cycle of sorts, but, that they really lacked hard evidence.

This was probably their evidence.

Link snapped back to the present, and resumed taking a small package that had been clumsily wrapped in brown paper, from his tunic.]

I don't suppose it's your birthday too? Or close to it?

[ Stories that carried on through generations and ages and even timelines, though Zelda isn't privy to that latter. She is, however, very aware that there were many Zeldas throughout time. Many heroes, as well. Counting them is another matter.

Nothing that had been researched pointed at one of them having the ability to exist or visit through... through Time itself. ]

What? [ Very eloquent, she's blinked out of her flurry of theories and hypothesis and questions when it comes to the legend of the Princess Zelda and the Chosen Hero. Turning in her chair again, she starts rummaging through her things and muttering to herself. ]

Is it? What day is it? Has it been a year? Goddess... [ Turning around again, she scrambles through her papers for a calendar, pushing aside notes and letters. Her shoulders sag. ] I suppose it has.

[ That's not right. ] A hundred and one years, actually. [ "Too" he said. She's whipping around again. ]

Zelda's... forgive me, the Zelda that's for [ he wrapped it very endearingly, bless him, she wants to say something but ] her birthday is today as well?

Mm-hm. I'm---I'm not all that great with dates, which, I suppose is a little on the ironic side of things, considering everything. There wasn't much need for an actual calendar system living with the Kokiri, beyond knowing the seasons and stuff.

...anyway. All that aside, I know her birthday. And I try to make sure I make something every year.

[Now he hesitated slightly at the hundred and one years comment.]

Have you had some trouble with the Ocarina of Time, by any chance?

[ Clearly, she's just as bad with dates. To have forgotten her own birthday. Surely her ancestor wouldn't have forgotten. If she isn't a failure for not having her sealing power, she's a failure in this way.

A bittersweet feeling builds in her chest. This Link brings presents, that he's made himself no less! to her ancestor every year. Did that Zelda─? Does this Link...

Kokiri, he said? It sounds familiar.

Just as the name the Ocarina of Time sounds familiar. A relic of the past, only mentioned in the oldest textbooks the library had to offer when Zelda could find any moment to bury her nose in text about technology. It was obscured through time, much like the Master Sword. Where it now known as the sword that seals the darkness. ]

Did you say Ocarina of Time? You... know of it?

[If he knew her inner questions he'd be a bit embarrassed. His answers would be even more confusing, and the easiest and most truthful was just friends, and yet that seemed a poor way of stating it.

Her spoken question got a very genuine smile as he set the small package down and took the instrument in question from his shirt.]

I know it very well. I've--used it a lot. Not so much recently, thankfully, other than to occasionally make a rain storm.

It's likely how I'm here now. Do you wanna see it?

[Link offered it over.]

[ The same way Zelda referred to herself and the Link she knew as a knight and a scholar. Not protector and the princess.

He smiles just like him and from that fact alone she steps closer, peeking down at the instrument in his palm.

An audible gasp bursts out of her throat and she has to restrain herself not to reach forward and take it from his possession. He offers it anyway and her hands move towards it. It can't be a replica, it's the real thing. This is... the Hero of Time? How does he make rain storms with an instrument? The weather was so unpredictable in her time, how could he just call down the heavens to open up and--

And pauses. ]

Are you certain that it's all right? [ What if she breaks it? What if the Ocarina reacts negatively to her? What if SHE is sent back in time and he's left here?? ]

[Link nodded with a half-laugh.]

Just don't improvise any songs. [He placed it in her hands so she could examine it. The Ocarina of Time was truly beautiful, it was a gift that he treasured greatly.]

You have to play it to make it work. Different things happen depending on the song you choose to play. Some just transport you to the different temples that are in Hyrule. Others change the time of day or the flow of Time. Epona has her favorite song, and she comes whenever I play it, as long as she can hear me.

And my favorite makes it rain.

[He thought of what he could tell her about it.]

Zelda thinks its made of something called Timeshift Stone, and that it might be the last piece of it in the world. All we know for certain was it was a treasure of the Royal Family, and used to open the Door of Time.

She gave it to me when we were both children to help me find somebody. I didn't end up finding them...but, she let me keep the Ocarina.

[ If she played the thing she might make his ears bleed. The princess does sniff a bit haughtily (wonders if she can even play one note) before she's left staring down at the small item in her palms. She cradles it like it's priceless.

It probably is.

He satiates her thirst for knowledge about it almost immediately. A song has to be played to activate it. Him saying not to improvise a song makes sense now. And Temples? There were more than just the Temple of Time? The Forgotten Temple? What happened to them? She had a feeling when she visited the Spring of Courage and the Spring of Power that something used to exist here but she could never know for sure... until now.

Temples. He used this to travel instantly to them. Much like the way Link uses the Sheikah Slate to travel to the shrines, she would wager. ]

Timeshift Stone... yes, yes I recall reading something about that before. I wondered if it had any correlation with the Guidance Stones I had been researching. [ Where was the Ocarina now in this time? Hidden beneath the Castle, somewhere? Or did Link take that secret with him and it was never to be found again. Her thumb skates the smooth finish, tracing the Holy Power insignia there at the mouth piece.

... For Link, it sounds like Zelda would do much. Her, just as well. After all, no matter how much time and effort and research she spent on the Sheikah Slate it belonged in Link's hands. Perhaps the Zelda who held this Ocarina, just as she was now, felt the same. It's of more use to the Hero, than the Princess. She has more questions about the Ocarina, about how he traveled but-- ]

I do, but, that song---I learned from a man that I taught it to by accident. Time travel is weird, heh. So, I figure that one's mine.

[ Already she was in despair that so many of the books of the Grand Library had been ruined beyond recognition. From years of no upkeep, from 100 years of Calamity Ganon. Zelda recovered what she could from the archives but she has to rebuild from the ground up.

That's probably why she forgot her own birthday. ]

How do you teach a song by accident? [ A rhetorical question. She looks both amused with him and awed. Could he time travel back to-- no. This time isn't his responsibility to fix.

Glancing around her study, she comes to a decision. ]

I'd like to hear that song. [ More like she wants to see him make it rain. Grabbing his wrist, she turns his palm so she can put the Ocarina in his hand. ] Traditions should be kept, and so that gift doesn't belong to me. Instead, would you play something with that Ocarina for me?

They're probably something the Sheikah designed. But, if you hit them, they'd tell you something they overheard about people.

[Rehtorical or not, she gets an answer.] I learned it from him as a grown-up, and then went back in Time to teach it to him as a child, so I could learn it from him as an adult.

[Link took the Ocarina and smiled.]

[ Theon has never had the same sort of money as the people he grew up surrounded by—or the sort of people he continues to surround himself with, and that’s always made for awkward birthday shopping experience. He isn’t great at party planning either (Robb can attest to that; he tried it once), but everybody likes alcohol, and Theon has graciously been gifted with the ability to pick out a very good wine.

He’s had enough to drink from Loras’s liquor cabinet, it seems appropriate to a bit further than just one bottle for the man's birthday, even if he does have poor taste in men and a knack for trying to get others to talk about feelings they don’t particularly want to talk about. Yeah, Theon still doesn't quite forgive him, and he likely never completely will. ]

[ Truthfully, Loras hadn't even really thought Theon would show up. Which would be fine and well founded, given that Loras botched Theon's own birthday. But even amidst the rather large gathering, the arrival of a new guest doesn't go unmissed. The Tyrells are gracious hosts.

He scarcely gets a pleasantly surprised hello out when he's being presented with a gift. ]

Oh - You didn't have to. Really. [ The bag is heavy. Even before Loras sees the multiple bottles, he's pretty sure that an apology for it not being more is a bit absurd. ] This is amazing. Really. Thank you.

[ He hadn’t planned on showing up. He’s still hurt over the mess that was his own birthday, and he knows better than to expect that Ramsay won’t be in attendance, but he’s lost too many friends this year. It would be best not to lose another. ]

[ He laughs, though it’s a note more forced than usual. There are definitely other places he’d rather be, but he makes no attempt to turn away from the door. It looks like he’ll be suffering through this for the sake of…ugh, friendship. ]

[ Loras sets the gift with a pile of others, taking care that it gets its own space and it isn't just thrown carelessly. Each gift seems to have placed with care on the table. His arm goes around Theon's shoulders so he can wheel him towards the kitchen. ]

What would you like? We've got everything, I think.

[ Theon takes note of how carefully everything seems to be placed, and he almost questions it. It’s something so minute and small and stupid to linger on, but it’s been a long time since he’s had any friends who aren’t Starks, and their gifts were usually presented unceremoniously and usually unwrapped on the night before. The concept is almost foreign. He doesn’t get the opportunity to ask, though, before he’s being led to the kitchen.

His own birthdays had never been a big event, certainly lacking in guests, and he takes care not to make eye contact with any of them. He can only assume that he’s pissed off far too many people in this room. ]

Gods, it’s like running into all your old school mates eight years after the fact, isn’t it?

[ Again, he laughs, between clenched teeth that form something that might be a smile or a cringe. ]

You know I’ll drink just about anything. Surprise me. It's your birthday.

[ Honestly, Loras knows maybe half the people here well enough to have him at his birthday. But people love to say they were at a Tyrell party, so it's something of a shindig. Even if it's on the tamer side.

He just laughs at Theon's not-quite-joke. ]

All right. [ He grabs a cup and pours out a mixed drink, fifty percent something sweet and fifty percent top shelf alcohol. ] Just help yourself whenever you need a top up. Open bar, sort of thing.
