The color of one's shirt on a particular day, the reason why you were out at the store when you were supposed to be home, the number of enemies made and the specific comment that turned them. So it might be weird for him to know that in the back of his head, there's something he's overlooking.

Uncomfortable even, with the way he's aware that a thing is missing, but he can't nail down what it is. He's halfway through the day before he reaches into his pocket and pulls out his phone, fiddles with the keys a bit before shooting off a message.]

It's been literal years. Late-night online chats, text messages with pictures and silly gifs of animals, plans for the future and past dreams. And yet, despite knowing all sorts of things about this girl already, knowing the sound of her voice and what she looks like when she smiles, what will make her roll her eyes and spend an hour lecturing him, Charlie's still nervous. Of course he is. She's this ridiculously smart, ridiculously pretty creature that's about seven miles out of his league. Or seven leagues out of his mile, maybe, he thinks, and it's silly but it's true.

And yet here he is, rolling his chair off the boarding ramp at O'Hare, making his way out past security with a backpack in his lap, looking around for a face he'd recognize anywhere. But just to be safe, a text message:

He's here. Charlie is here. Charlie is here because he texted that he'd gotten on the plane, and the flight had blinked from 'on time' to 'at gate' more than long enough ago for just about everyone to have deplaned. Charlie is actually, properly in Chicago.

Charlie is texting her from being in Chicago.

It feels odd to look up from her phone when there's a new message from him. There were usually so many things that could be dropped in favour of answering immediately. Today, Eileen forces herself to look up instead, fingers fretting at the edges of her sign until--

"--Polo!"

Charlie is here, and Charlie is going to have to deal with Eileen weaving through other passengers to all but fall into his lap in an effort to fumble her way into a hug.

She sounds different in person, he thinks dizzily, hearing that 'Polo' ring out in her clear voice. Different, but still so incredibly familiar. And then he catches sight of her and an incredibly sparkly sign coming his way, glimpses of her through the crowd of people all headed towards their destinations, and he's got just enough presence of mind to drop his backpack on the floor next to his chair before she's in his lap instead. After all, there are priorities, and his are definitely here and now. There's a huge grin on his face he can't remember putting there as his arms slip around her, holding her close as he can as his heart pounds. Here, here, here.

"You're good at this game," he finally ventures, almost breathless. "Remind me to make sure you're always on my team." Still smiling, still maybe in shock a little. Is this really happening? It's been so long, he can barely believe it.

Maybe Eileen should apologize. Maybe it's too much or too aggressive. But then she feels Charlie's arms curling to hold her exactly in place, and the impulse vanishes completely.

"Always play to win." Is it too much to press a kiss to his cheek? Surely not. It's how she greets most of her good friends--and, for all this in-person thing is new, Charlie is absolutely a good friend. "God, you're-- here."

That will probably have to be said at least a few more times during his visit. It might have to be said at least a few more times today--maybe even before they've left the airport.

"The flight was okay? You had enough to eat?"

It's not too much, not too aggressive, if anything it isn't quite enough. Not yet. He could just never let go, right? That's an option? For now it is, he decides, and it's the most natural thing in the world to breathe in the scent of her as she kisses his cheek, to reach up and tuck her hair back behind her ear as pretense for how he just can't stop staring. Or smiling. That's just stuck there, too, like his eyes on her face. "Pretty sure I am," he jokes, "but I mean, it could be another dream. I could be hallucinating, but I don't think so. You're way too pretty to be a hallucination." The grin on his face goes a little lopsided, dimples peeking through. "Flight was fine. East coast isn't that far away, you know? Just a couple hours. Like, literally two. I mean, Maine might seem like another planet, but..." Ah, how can he not hug her again, how can he not keep his arms wrapped around her waist, holding on to her? Eventually she'll have to stand up again, but for now, he'll take it while he can. "What about you? Hungry? Waiting too long?"
