TOO TIRED FOR A PITHY TITLE

MAKING MAGIC MEME

Magic is something intensely intimate. Whether it's something inherent in you from when you're born or something drawn out in rituals and summonings, it's full of depth and wonder and potential dangers. Maybe you're showing someone that doesn't have magic what you can do, maybe you're sharing magic with someone you love, winding things together. Maybe you're heading out with some friends to make a salt circle and do some summoning. The point is you're not in it alone. You're sharing in this intimate experience whether it's new for you or old hat. Take care of yourselves and each other; hope that the person you know isn't prejudiced against magic.

• Top level your character. Include any details you might think are relevant. Or don't. As always, we're not the cops.
• Naturally you can AU your characters to have magic or AU them into other canons that have magic! Don't let a "mundane" setting deter you.

[You know what's great about magic? Well, besides everything. Magic is really great for getting back at bullies, especially when those bullies are suddenly like...twenty years older than you.

Are Draco's trouser legs suddenly smoking, and maybe a tiny bit on fire? Probably. Yes. Definitely on fire.]

Some family traditions were retained, even after the Malfoy reputation was destroyed beyond all repair after the second wizarding war; one of them was, when Draco married Astoria Greengrass, Lucius and Narcissa had left the Manor in Wiltshire for the slightly smaller property in Cornwall. Unlike his father, though, who might have moved but had never really been that far from their lives, Lucius had limited his presence from the younger Malfoys lives. Part of it, yes, had been because Astoria had abandoned the pure ideals that he and Narcissa had subscribed to, but as much of it was...well.

He preferred to be away from the world.

It was when Astoria got ill and then died that he and Narcissa shifted to be closer to Draco and Scorpius, and even then there was a distance between the two family units, right up to the day when Lucius had to pen an owl to Malfoy Manor to let Draco know that his mother had passed in her sleep. Then, he began spending more time in Malfoy Manor again, and he suspected it was because his son worried about him being alone. Merlin knew Lucius worried about the same thing.

And that, he thinks, is how he finally figured it out - what Draco was doing with his collection of alchemy books and dark arts tomes that Malfoys had gathered over the centuries. He ought to have suspected it, of course. Astoria's...curse was tragic and had taken from Draco the one spot of happiness he'd managed to find for himself. Now, he only had Scorpius. It wasn't the same as partner; he knew that well enough for himself these days.

It's a cool winter day, then, when he sweeps into Malfoy Manor, a small velvet bag in one hand and orders a house elf to direct him to Draco. It's not a surprise to find him in the study surrounded by books, though he's fairly sure that's not mutual. His son looks startled to see him, and who can blame him? These days, Lucius mostly only comes at invitation. The look turns skeptical as Lucius sinks into the chair across from Draco's desk, opening the bag to set a time-turner on the surface between them. Don't ask your father where he got this, Draco. It's likely that you don't really want to know.

"The only way we're going to unravel that curse is to go back to the beginning of it."

Yes, that was a we.

[ it's been years. years and years since fiendfyre gone wrong and draco does just fine with candles and torches and fireplaces and fire where it's meant. things like this though, things like this...

there's a moment where nothing happens because draco stops breathing. literally. he tenses very still and the flames lick up his trouser legs too high before he lets out a series of ragged breaths and puts it out with a flick of his wand, a hissed out charm just to be sure, making absolutely certain the flames aren't going to consume him whole.

he's shaking so much he can't even take the time to figure out who's done it yet. ]

[ There are several reasons they've always gotten along so well, Lucius thinks as they stand on a Welsh moor together, the last gurgling breath of the sacrifice dying in between them. One, of course, is the kind of almost reckless magical curiosity that encourages them to try a ritual even with no real need for it. Naturally, the love for torture and murder and just death - mutual loves that had them often paired together to wreak terror on Muggles and Muggleborns. But the last, the one that few really realize, is because he and Bella - their shared lust isn't just for blood.

Bellatrix Black is stripping out of her robes under the light of the moon, in a field coated in blood, and Lucius doesn't even bother to try to take his eyes off her as he unfastens the hooks and buttons on his own clothing. ]

Do you think we should have heeded the warning? Bound together forever?

[ He doesn't believe it, really, and suspects she doesn't either. If she did, it would be Tom Riddle who she tried to do this ritual with. But it could be true. If it is, how much does he mind? ]

Astoria Greengrass. Astoria Malfoy. The world's most beautiful and kind woman and also the most tragic. Draco loved her with all his being and still does, desperately and with a terrible want. He knows the story of the Peverell brothers and how Death found them but he has no intention of making their mistakes; he knows better than to try and bring his wife back a shade of herself like Cadmus. He knows better than to try and bring his wife back. But his son carries a dormant form of the curse and if it isn't stopped, then it could pop up at any time and take his only son from him.

So he looks at alchemy, looks to the dark arts, looks to anything that he hadn't had time to do to save his wife. Nothing fits. He's a man obsessed—most people think it a hobby but he spends all his free hours on it, working, trying. If only...

Now, after the war and after marrying Astoria, Draco had begun to follow her beliefs more easily, tempered by the war as he was. He still loved his parents but the rift it created was always there, two belief systems at odds with one another until the end of time.

Or now, apparently.

Draco sits at his desk, surrounded by his books and notes, and stares at his father as though he's gone insane. Perhaps he has, with the loss of Narcissa—Draco's mother had always been the rock of the family, keeping them all together and in one piece and without her it seems the Malfoy men become a bit of a mess. Still... His eyes stray to the time-turner. If they go back far enough and unravel the curse entirely, then that means that...

"You didn't even like Astoria, Father."

Draco's given him that look before, Lucius thinks, the one where he can see his son doubting whether his mind is whole. After Azkaban, after the war, years later whenever he'd pause by a window at Malfoy Manor and simply stare unseeingly out at the lawn, seeing things that hadn't been there for many, many years. And, of course, it's a bit deserving. Azkaban is not something Lucius Malfoy has ever fully recovered from; the loss of his pride has never been something he's ever fully recovered from. Draco has not seen, for a very long time, the the proud and regal man he likely remembers from his early childhood. Even now, with a bit more of a light in his eyes than there's been for years, with an unexpected return of steel to his expression - Lucius is not that man. He's more worn.

And of course, Draco's right; he and Narcissa - they hadn't liked Astoria, not after it became clear that she was pulling their son and then their grandson away from the pure ideals. But Draco loved her, still. Loved her the way Lucius still loved Narcissa but....the difference, Lucius thinks, is he had a life with Narcissa. He'd had a long, sometimes terrible, sometimes wonderful life. It won't be so many years, really, before he'll be able to go to her. Draco's still young, and that woman Lucius had disliked under the veneer of charm and good manners had made him happy. There had been a time, before her, where Lucius wasn't sure any of them would be happy again.

If anyone deserves to be, it's his son, and his lips curl into an amused expression. There's a flicker of fond warmth in his eyes that Draco might catch. "No, I didn't particularly," he says. "But you love her, and I find that more important."

So, uh, [ he tries to sound nonchalant, as if he hasn't studied witches his whole life ] how does it work? I have to shuffle the deck, right?

[ She blinks at his question, not expecting him to ask one of a first-timer though they haven't done much but introduce themselves. Lil likes surprises and she smiles, certain that whether it's pretend or denial, it will play into the reading. He may simply have an untouched aptitude for the psychic. ]

And focus. Try not to think about anything or anywhere else. [ She places the deck between them for him to take. While he accustoms himself to the cards, she chooses one small black stone of many small crystals littering the nearby window sill and puts it before her, close to the table's edge. He'll probably pick up on this completing the invisible pentagram as laid out by four other crystals at the table's edge, gently harnessing the elements. The black tourmaline crests the star's top, the spirit point, to absorb negative energy. She has an inkling it might be needed for one or both of them. ]
