In fact, bending the rules on what's considered acceptable in romance and sexual encounters can lead to anything from ostracization to death, depending on the time and culture.

The Baroness and Cobra Commander and Destro had all been captured. Destro and Rex had been sent to jails that violated the Geneva convention while Ana had been left on a prison ship in the middle of the ocean so that she couldn't do any harm. In addition to the whole protocol about doing no harm, they were also concerned about harm being done to her. Even though the Baroness had been brainwashed, it was still her face that was plastered everywhere, because she was the beautiful girl who had fallen into the wrong crowd and had destroyed half of Paris after making her lover's employee kill the man whom she'd married with a kiss.
But being here had left her with some freedom, even though she was still locked in the lower decks of the boat where she couldn't escape from, and with enough soundproofing that she couldn't be located by the nanomites alone. It meant that Ana was often alone with the Joes who were her guards, and as they trusted her more and more, it meant that there were less of them down there with her.
So Ana was just sitting on the small institutional sofa that she had been provided in the little outer room that made up part of her cell, her glasses perched on the tip of her nose as she read the latest book that she'd been given. Alas, she was still in those jailhouse gray clothes, but she'd been given a pair of glasses that actually worked now so that she didn't need to worry about things like contacts and the like. Her dark hair was loose over her shoulders, and occasionally she took a sip of water from a bottle that was on the seat next to her.

Some of the Joes loved the assignment. After all, it was just about the easiest one that the highly-trained operatives could get assigned to, and it basically involved keeping your eyes on a beautiful young woman for a week at a stretch before being rotated out. Flag shook his head whenever he heard the younger guys jockeying for the post, but if that was how they got their jollies, then as long as they didn't actually touch the prisoner or sit at the security desk, staring at the monitors with their hand in their pants, then he didn't care.
Of course, after a few rotations of his own, he'd started to understand the appeal. the Baroness-- Ana, he corrected himself-- was a looker, and then some. And from day one she hadn't struck him as the kind of threat that needed this level of securing. But he wasn't the man in charge, so this was how it was.
These days, the detail consisted of just three Joes-- one on foot patrol, one at the monitors, and one in their rack at any given shift. And more than half the time, monitor duty was pretty much ignored. Flag was the one walking the corridors, and as had become his habit, when his circuit took him back to Ana's cell, he stepped inside for a chat.
"Ana," he said in simple greeting, the hatch shutting with a heavy, solid thunk behind him. "How're you holding up?"

But Flagg was different, and she approved of that, and that was one of the reasons that she set the book down when she otherwise wouldn't have for most people. Duke and the Joe Doctor who was trying to remove her nanomites were the only one that she would have done it for, and they always made sure to give Ana plenty of notice when one of them was going to be on board.
Of course some things didn't change, so Ana greeted him with a "hello darling." When she'd used it in the past, it had been to create a separation between herself and her targets and now she did it again with him. Flagg wasn't her friend, he was her guard, and sometimes guards tended to forget who and what she was. Of course, that just gave her the leave to remind them, but it almost ended with Ana's being in trouble. She was bored with being as trouble as much as she was bored with being good. Really, all and all what her life now was simply...boring. "I'm alright. Just got in some new books. You?"

He set down his rifle against the wall, making sure to stand directly between it and her, lest Ana get any ideas, not that the biometrics built into his weapons would allow her to fire them anyway.
"Got a hundred on the big fight tonight, but to be honest, I'm not too optimistic about my odds." Flag glanced around the room. It was comfortable, if not opulent. "Anything else you need?"

She didn't think about Rex. If she thought about her brother than Ana might fall apart again.
But no, it wasn't only that she might escape, it might be that the other two might escape and either come and get her, or might push the self-destruct button on those lovely little nanomites of hers and then she'd be dead. So now she was costing millions of dollars just sitting here, talking to him. In an amused sort of voice, she just asked. "You don't think we'd be able to stop at a nice beach, do you? Bikinis and tropical drinks and laying on the beach to work on my tan?"
It was futile to ask, they didn't even let Ana up on deck, and they blocked the view of the stars at night so even if she had the chance to talk to someone, she wouldn't be able to even give them some sort of celestial navigation. All Ana knew was that she was somewhere in the Pacific, and she supposed that needed to be enough given what she'd done.
