THE DAEMON MEME

In the universe of the His Dark Materials trilogy (or the movie The Golden Compass), every person has a creature called a daemon that accompanies them all their lives, and is emotionally and metaphysically a part of them. Daemons are often described as sort of external souls (while the part of the personality in a human's body is the spirit).


Basic Daemon Facts:

- They take the shape of animals
- They can talk, no matter what their shape
- Children's daemons can change form at will; around puberty they 'settle' and become one animal permanently
- Neither the person or the daemon chooses the final settled form, but it always reflects their personality (although not necessarily in obvious or simple ways)
- They are almost always the opposite sex as their human
- If a daemon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
- Being physically apart from one's daemon causes horrible emotional and physical pain
- Daemons frequently talk to and touch each other, in ways that reflect or complement their persons' interactions, but daemons talking to humans other than their own is considered strange, and touching humans not their own is extremely taboo; it generally occurs only between long-time lovers. Touching someone else's daemon without permission is a terrible violation.

How it works:

- Design a daemon for your muse and put as little or as much information as you like about them (shape, name, link to a picture or species wiki if you are so inclined) in a comment, with your muse's name and series in the subject.
- Check out other people's daemons and let your daemons interact too.

[Danny's daemon used to be a female Mountain Hawk Eagle named Jayna until he went through the trial of Shao Lao. He gained the power of the Iron Fist and his daemon changed, even though Danny was already an adult and his personality should have been settled post-puberty. 

Jayna shape-shifted into, surprise - surprise...a green dragon with golden wings and spines. She can also breathe fire. Jayna is still relatively small, often sitting on Danny's shoulders or clinging to his back if she's comfortable with the company. Otherwise, she tends to hide inside his clothes. Personality wise, she's less chatty than Danny and more wary of everyone while still being very, very curious and starved for affection.]

Sally walks into a coffee shop with a White-headed capuchin on her shoulder. The monkey seems very interested in Janya because he keeps looking her way while Sally pretends not to stare.

The monkey is curious but quiet, not bothering with a greeting but trying to get a better look at the dragon from his perch.

Sombra's daemon is Turbidus, a male veiled chameleon that is almost constantly purple. He's impish and sneaky like his human and is either hidden on her person at any given time, or is across the room on the wall spying on her company from another angle.

[Meanwhile, Doomfist's daemon - a leopard who goes by Luwa - may seem content to simply laze about, but both Sombra and Turbidus no doubt know what happens to those who think she's as idle as she feigns. Hell, they've probably seen it, how she practically revels in using her strength as much as Akande himself does.

When he limps 'home' after an encounter, though, as opposed to giving him something to lean on? She's prowling as far ahead as she, they, dare, tail lashing as she 'scouts' the halls to ensure nothing blocks their way. Her usual lazy demeanor gives these moments all the more weight, when she's abruptly all angry intensity, even as Akande's own body language speaks of repressed tension as he heads back to his room.

It'd be even worse if he lost.]

Jesse's daemon is a female coyote named Sassafras. She's generally lowkey, but can be fierce if provoked. She's also fascinated by dragons. Since he is a werewolf, like a Witch, he can be separated over great distances from Sassafras without the usual negative effects/pain of daemon separation.

[Josh's dæmon is a ring-tailed lemur, named "Numees", long-stuck nickname being "Missy". She's a bit quiet outside of private or personal situations, in which she's got a small, high, whispery voice and a highly, wildly speculative and ultimately optimistic if a bit of a worrywart-y, "just making sure you're sure about this" nature; and is a clinging shoulder-sitter who's quick to physically reach out to/poke or nudge other dæmons just as much as her human.]

[Zoe's dæmon is a rat snake, named "Blancandrin", nicknamed "Lando" (once upon a time, it was "Candy"). He's relaxed and generally forgiving and live-and-let-live, but with unshakable nerve and a daring and adventurous, wanderlust-y spirit, viewing himself and his counterpart as a team destined to, in spite of her more down-to-earth and practical nature, get out there and see wonderful things.]

[Lucas's dæmon is a big ol' shrike named "Maluerea", or "Lulu", and she's the even feistier half of the duo and a font of frustration and bending it - she's touchily sensitive, bitter and seldom in a good mood, vindictive and "let me at 'em", ever-restless with a judgmentally critical mind, and unable to calm her jets; she doesn't talk much verbally, but she's quick to express herself by flapping and screeching at other dæmons and has a penchant for taking out her pent-up energy by catching and killing small animals.]

[ An Africanized honey bee, aka "killer bee" -- you know, those ones science made extremely aggressive and determined. Isabel has experimented on herself and on her daemon, and is well known for her discoveries in separating daemons from their human companions, leading many people to believe she doesn't have one. She does, and her daemon's venom has been altered to increase its potency so that a single sting may kill an adult human. But she isn't very sneaky due to the damage the work did to her body; she creates a loud, distracting buzz when she flies, so is usually landlocked and lurking out of sight. Her name is unknown except to Isabel. ]

Ash Fox | Original Character

[ Ash is an energetic, rough around the edges eighteen year old whose world is based on Shadowrun! He's passionate, rash and can be stubborn in his opinions, while also being extremely accepting of people from other backgrounds (as long as they're not arseholes). There's more on him here in his journal but that's the basics!

His deamon is a Red Kite named Awhina, a species of raptor that's distinct cry is actually used for eagles in movies (cos MURICA needed a more impressive call than what an eagle actually sounds like). Personality wise, she's more cautious than Ash and is always watching over him, even if she's not perched on his shoulder. ]

Moon would be horrified, if he could see Stone now. His companion in this weird world he's found himself in is taller than he is, in groundling form, by several paces... and feathered in bright red and black, with a sharp, hooked beak and talons as long as his hand. Stone's daemon is apparently one of the giant, flightless, carnivorous birds of his home world. She's about as grouchy as he is, too, and squawks readily at anyone who comes too close, even though he occasionally punches her in the ribs to shut her up.

Taako has a familiar scent, though, albeit an annoying one, so he zeroes in on him out of the crowd in this crazy stone city.

"Should've known I'd run into you sooner or later," he comments, spotting Taako at last, coming up to walk beside him.

It tends to change depending on his situation, often taking the form of a large bird or, occasionally, the sort of cat that will shove something off a desk while staring at you nonchalantly.]

[Even with his tendency to handle a mission however tf he likes, James is an order-taker. His daemon is a German shepherd named Shylah. When he locked himself in the priest's hole after his parents died, he locked Shylah without; it helps them in his job, since they can't always be close to manage a mission. But the longer they're apart, the more irritable they both get.]
