Do you want to be alone?
![]() You know you're a freak and that, sooner or later, everyone you've known will leave you. And why wouldn't they? You're so different. An outsider. Maybe it's socially, because of your family or situation, your appearance, or, in a rare case, some ability that separate you from others, but it's all the same, even if you're oppressed for your differences or if you slide under the radar. You're in a hell of your own design - loneliness. Until you meet another freak, someone else incredibly different...someone who also wants to stay with you. The circumstances, good or bad, under which you met don't matter, because you're not alone anymore. In fact, this person makes you want to look past any self-loathing or low self-esteem you may have and be better. At least they do on some level. Why they care, you don't entirely know. One thing is for certain, however: you'll do anything to keep them safe and by your side. Your situation may just come in handy, for once.

Gabriel Starling | OC | OTA
Slides into like Eyyyyy
The first stop was a visit to the Crane family estate. Lucian hadn't been to this part of town before, so when he walks out of the trailer he sticks his nose up to sniff the air. There's a slow turn of his head as he catches the scent of another wolf, a scent that wasn't Soren's as she walks on ahead to meet the clients. Lucian follows suit as he catches up with the group and their handler, taking in the surroundings and the building itself. He could pick up hushed whispers about him and his partner, most people were used to the large wolves of their kind over their massive bipedal form. Never quite getting over the comments he heard about himself.
Still, the man at the door started to escort their clients inside and they followed as per instructions, where they were greeted by Mr. Crane and his own guard. Lucian tried to point out which one the wolf scent belong to, Soren, on the other hand, was much quicker at picking the man out as she nudged him and pointed her head in his direction. They both bowed their head in greeting to him before they tuned into the conversation happening before them. The meeting was to be held in the grand living area but the wolves and guards were meant to stay outside, as they didn't need to know of their affairs.

He'd never been around his own kind, not really. He didn't know if there were social cues or rules he needed to adhere to, if there was any way he was supposed to act around wolves that were not of his own pack, what he was supposed to say. This would be awkward at best and a social disaster at worst, or at least that was what he immediately began telling himself.
And yet, he was curious. Undeniably so. Curious about the scent of the other wolves as they neared and then entered the house. Curious, and then well and truly taken aback when he actually saw what form these wolves took. He'd never seen anything like them - when he turned, he was nothing like this; he was large, yes - easily twice or three times the size of regular wolves - but...nothing like these two.
His manners didn't leave him though, and when they acknowledged him Gabriel did the same, keeping his shock and urge to stare behind a mask of calm and obedience. Jacob had obviously wanted a rise out of him, so Gabriel replied by giving him nothing.
Once their guests had become settled, the wolves were excused, and soon Gabriel was alone with the two of them.
It was unfamiliar and strange having another wolf in the house, let alone two. And for possibly the first time in his life, Gabriel felt an internal twinge; an urge to remind them that this was his territory somehow. To protect what's his, even if it isn't really the house itself he's bothered about protecting. It wasn't something he acted on though - he didn't know how he would even if he wanted to.
"..I'm afraid I wasn't told your names before you arrived."

Lucian opened his mouth as if to say their names, only to shut it, turn his head towards Soren and give a whine. They never practiced to see if being able to speak translated well in this form, if it was even possible to speak at all. Soren just rolls her eyes and leaves the room for a moment, coming back with their handler in tow who held a large tablet and long touch screen pen.
Before their handler handed over the tablet, they looked over at Gabriel and then pointed to Lucian and Soren respectively while saying their names before leaving the room again to return to the conversation they were just pulled from. Lucian took a spot in front of Gabriel, setting the tablet out in front of him.
Soren, on the other hand, paced around the room, picking out all the scents that seem to linger. She wasn't much of talker on assignments unless she needed to be and right now, Lucian seemed to have things covered in the department.
Lucian types up what he wanted to say and a robotic voice said it aloud so Gabriel didn't have to worry about reading anything, "We didn't know there was another wolf here, so we weren't given your name either. As our handler mentioned for us, I'm Lucian and my partner is Soren. It's a pleasure to meet you. "

When their handler - another part of this that's taken Gabriel by surprise - gives him their names, he gives him a nod and thanks him as he leaves, but waits until Lucien has introduced himself via the tablet before he replies.
"I think that took us both by surprise by the sounds of things." He glances over to Soren as he gives his own name, though his focus is soon back to Lucien. "Gabriel - and the pleasure's mine, I'm sure."

To most humans, he's not very remarkable. He's drifting from streetside cafe to streetside cafe ordering little snacks to go as he explores, a pack hanging from one shoulder, his clothes simple and obviously from the countryside. Oddly, he doesn't wear any shoes, which might make him stand out even more than the gray tinge to his skin. Still, he's amiable with the lower classes, and pays well for his snacks, so he hasn't caused too much of a stir yet.
To a Lycan, however, he smells like scales and predator, and Gabriel will catch the new and unfamiliar scent easily around the city, whenever he leaves the palace grounds. Worse, after a day of exploring, Stone starts hanging around outside the Prince's palace, peering up at the it with a thoughtful expression. That, perhaps, might be something Gabriel might want to check out.

But that makes it a world that Gabriel knows like the back of his hand. He's often among the last to sleep and the the first to wake up, so he often spends the very little time he has to himself spending an hour or so wandering the outskirts of the gardens and the palace grounds. It clears his mind, gives him time to breathe. Usually it's when he unwinds-
But tonight, he stops and he listens. Smells the air, frowns.
That's different. Not something he can recognise. But it's not one of his own kind, is it..? No, it can't be. They'd never make it over the border. So what then?
Getting over the wall is easy enough, though he's careful to land quietly, pausing again to figure out which direction he needs to go now; not something that's difficult. It's such an unusual scent it's distinctive, not easily lost amidst the smell the the trees, the grass, other animals, the guards on patrol.
Yet all he ends up finding is a man. Or at least, something shaped like one. Coming to a wary stop several feet away, Gabriel takes in what he can see of him as he addresses him.
"What's your business here?"
no subject
Because that is definitely the source of the predator-scent he'd picked up wafting out of that castle-place. And yet he looks like all the other groundlings here, as far as he can tell-- not even a funny color or missing his shoes, like Stone is. That makes him think this is an even better shapeshifter than a Raksura would be, or perhaps just more closely related to the local species. Interesting.

Gabriel doesn't recognise the stranger, and try as he might he can't place his race or even his species. And while he's not afraid of him, he is cautious as he steps a little closer, coming around to stand in front of him.
"I can't see how that's the case; I've a good memory, and I don't remember us meeting before now." Bright, gold eyes narrow ever so slightly, "You're no human. Where have you come from?"
no subject
That ends in an uplift that almost but not quite makes it sound like a question. At the very least, it's an invitation for Gabriel to confirm or deny the assumption.
no subject
Still, he stays where he is for now. So he's here for him as much as Gabriel is him. If he doesn't know of Lycans, then perhaps he isn't from Estus at all. Everyone here knows who Gabriel is, if only because of how controversial his presence in the royal household is.
"It is, yes. Strangers don't tend to get this close to Stars Reach without my knowing."
Well...he might as well introduce himself. He gets the feeling he won't get much further without a little give first.
"My name's Gabriel."
no subject
He continues with the question: "What are you doing in the middle of a whole city of them?"
no subject
"No, I'm not." Not for a long time at any rate, "I suppose there's not really a polite way to ask what you are, but I am curious."
What he also wants to know is whether or not Stone is here alone or with others; a possibility that already has Gabriel nervous. Humans here don't look kindly upon those who aren't the same as them - the dwindling number of Lycans is a testament to that.
"I'm under the employ of his Highness the King."
no subject
Speaking of, he adds, "I'm a Raksura. Pretty sure you don't have many of those around here. I don't eat humans, if that's what you're worried about. If you work for the king, I'm going to be generous and assume you don't, either."
