[ it's a fair question, and if she's honest with herself it's a decision she's still questioning. maru doesn't appear to have any intentions of stopping what she'd become notorious for. but she remembers ares's triumph over what he'd influenced her to do, how he'd taunted them both.

she's not naive enough anymore to believe every evil thing she's done is as a result of ares's influence, but that doesn't make her less of a victim. ]

[ she doesn't deny it. there's no point; maru has seen her survive things no mortal could and perform feats that they couldn't dream of achieving. she'll live through this war and many more, without the comfort of a home to return to. but maru's words aren't meant to comfort; they're meant to disturb and upset.

if diana weren't aware of that and reminding herself of it throughout the conversation, it might be working. ]
