The Dating Meme

Dating is, when you think about, really weird. It's a totally different thing for different people. Some are friends for years before they date; others start dating on the same day they met. Sometimes, there's a lot mushy stuff involved; other times, the couple acts just like friends. None of this is necessarily right or wrong.

Whatever it is, your character and the character you reply to are now dating. How? That's up to you. Whether it be awkward or not, the relationship will be uniquely theirs.

1. Best Friends to More: Oh, wow, you've been this person's friend forever! But then you realize you have feelings for them, and they for you. Will things change when you change your status?

2. The Sudden Decision: Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy, but here I am, date me maybe?

3. Confession: You've had feelings for this person for, like, ages, and you want to ask them to date you. Or maybe the confession just slips out...
4. Hate Date: You really don't like this person; actually, you hate them. But you don't want them to be with anyone else!

[ Roger could not believe his eyes when he first stumbled upon Hugo again. How many years had it been?
And the sweet 'stache! ... And an ex and a kid. So much had changed. So little had changed - still an absolute nerd of at least two varieties. That's what you had to like about Hugo. Hungry for knowledge, total geek, responsible as hell. You had to respect the hell out of the man.

That's how it started anyway. Reminiscing about college days and the reasonably stupid shit they would get up to. Pranks, drinks, dates, helping each other with countless hours in the library while Hugo had to double check 19th century courting rituals and Roger super appreciated that article on caskets. He'd even managed to win over Ernest a little by bringing his dog Mel over once or twice. Well, that was his toughest critic around. So. Dude night. Watching the match, which Roger still didn't know who half these fuckers were but Hugo's enthusiasm was contagious. Spending half the night rooting for Hugo's opposition just to tease. On the couch with just enough space between them for a comfortable personal bubble. Commercials on. Annoying, but it gave him a chance to talk to Hugo without interrupting the sacred match. ]

You know, it's about time I repaid the favor for all your hospitality. I make one hell of a dinner. [ Now to go for the kill ] And dessert.

[ Okay so how... the fuck do you end up with a crush on Chuck Fucking Hansen. Why did he think this was going to work out in his favor in any way?! Chuck was not exactly known for being uh... welcoming. Fucking Hermann was more welcoming and he was an actual alien attempting to pass for human in a synthetic skin!

That said. The guy warms up to you after a while. At least, he was warming up to Newt just fine. He couldn't remember the last time they had an awkward pause. He'd actually seen the guy smile. Kind of a lot. He looked good with a smile on.

ALL THAT SAID HE WAS A JOCK AND A PAIN IN THE ASS OH AND HE WAS WAY TOO FUCKING YOUNG FOR YOU NEWT. THAT IS A FOURTEEN YEAR AGE G--

Newt was never exactly known for listening to his little sensible shoulder angel (emphasis on little). Besides, he was already sitting next to Chuck outside. Max needing some fresh air and all that. ]

If anyone asked why Chuck had detoured past the lab to steal Newt away from his work on his way to take Max out, he'd probably offer them a stiff glare and a cold shoulder. Partly because he didn't owe anyone an explanation but mostly because that required looking too closely at the little bundle of emotions that sat curled up in his chest and pulsed whenever the scientist was mentioned.

They were sitting beside one another, closer than Chuck would usually allow and he was blatantly ignoring that too. The silence between them in comfortable, only interrupted every now and again whenever they think of something to say.

It's been a good five minutes and Chuck almost startles at Newt's exclamation.

"Hi?"

Is this Newt not being able to control his volume? You fucking bet it was! Didn't even bat an eyelash at him being mildly confused. It was just Chuck being weird right? That's what he was trying to convince himself anyway. He needed to keep this facade of confidence up for a little bit. He started with a nervous smile, hands rubbing at his knees. He's incapable of keeping still.

"So. What's your plans for tomorrow night?"

Really? Really Newt? This was your master plan?

Chuck waits for Newt to say whatever he's going to say, knowing the best thing to do is let him have time to get it out. The question throws him off guard and he hesitates for a long moment before answering.

"The same as most nights. Basically this."

... Okay why the long pause. What was the need of the long pause. Why are you trying to give him a heart attack. He only looks worried for a moment, though.

"Cool! So... There's this pretty decent place I heard of. Thought we could try it. Maybe get some dessert after."

Okay so going for a walk didn't exactly seem like Chuck's cup of tea. And, neither did coffee. But coffee sort of implied date more, right?

"Or coffee! Or y'know whatever..."

The young pilot offers a raised brow and nods slowly, only glancing away long enough to pet Max as he runs back over and drools into his lap.

"Sure, yeah. I'll have to get the old man to watch Max, but yeah. But y'know, maybe with the dessert and not the coffee, yeah?"

"Awesome! Yeah! Great, cool. We'll-- Have to meet up after about six?"

Newt narrowed his eyes at him and leaned in a little closer.

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

Raised brow. Why. Do not make this any harder for him than it had to be, Chuck, Jesus.

"Yeah. I'll drop Max off and meet you at the exit around then."

The brow doesn't come down but his lips tilt up in the slightest hint of a smirk, one dimple making an appearance. "You alright, mate? You seem kinda... more... hyper than usual?"

Not the dimple. Not the fucking dimple. He is but one man. One mortal man.

"What? Me? No." He said as his voice started to speed up, clearly full to the brim of nervous fucking energy. Newt never could hide his emotions. Probably never would. "I'm not nervous at all."

Except he didn't fucking say nervous did he. Newt turned forward and just facepalmed at himself, muttering just loud enough to hear. "Jesus Christ, it's like I'm in a fucking anime."

Chuck stares for another long moment before he loses it, the laugh coming so suddenly that even Max starts momentarily before trotting over to Newt and licking his face. That only makes Chuck laugh harder.

"I never said nervous mate. You did." Once he's calmed himself down, he takes a deep breath and looks at Newt seriously. "Why would you be nervous?" It wasn't like they didn't spend time together all the time.

Woah. A laugh. They didn't happen a lot but Newt was hearing more and more lately. It helped to chill out his mood. He didn't move from his hunch over, keeping his head in his hand, but did turn to look at him. "What? You're too smooth to get nervous before you ask someone on a date?"

Chuck's brows furrow then and there's the slightest tilt of his head that is most probably something he has picked up from Max. "Wait, you're asking me on a date? Like, a proper date kinda date?"

"Yes?" he asked, clearly confused. And actually sitting up. "Why the hell do you think I've been flirting with you for weeks?" Fine. Okay, cool. He could take rejection. He could. It was totally fine. "If you want to change your mind now, I get it." He would just be totally heartbroken no big deal.

"You've been flirting with me?" Okay, so Chuck wasn't expecting that and now that he thinks back, it makes sense and a look of realisation settles over his face. "Oh. I don't wanna change my mind."

Newt kind of... blinked.

Well.

Fuck. He couldn't say he was expecting that. He grinned wide. "Oh, yeah, because my favorite thing to do is inflate your ego for no reason." Okay so maybe that kind of was it. Low-key fucking with him. Also complimenting him. Because fuck you maybe he liked that kind of shit. Anyway!

"Did you seriously not notice? I thought the whole fucking base knew I was into you! Except maybe your dad, thank God..."
