The Road

The Road

Maybe you’ve always been traveling this road. Maybe you just started. But, either way, now you have a companion. They say it’s not about the destination, it’s the journey. Now you’re going to have to find out.

1. Post-apocalyptic. There’s not much left of the world out there. But there’s still this road, and at the end of it, they say, there’s a haven.
2. Epic fantasy. It’s a long and winding road, through forests and plains, and all manner of treacherous fairies and giant spiders along the way. Supposedly, at the end of it there’s a castle, a dragon, and a treasure.
3. Yellow brick road! A journey through a world weird and wonderful, and at the end, if you’re lucky, is a way back home.
4. Road trip! Route 66, cheap motels, diners, small-town America and the open highway.
5. The Eternal Commute. Welcome to hell. Or Jersey. Either way, really. The two of you are stuck in this car, in traffic, and you’re getting nowhere. Eventually, one day, you’re going to get to your destination.
6. Wilderness road. Maybe you’re lost, or stranded, or this is all you’ve ever known. All you know is there’s only one road in all this wilderness, and if you’re ever going to get back to civilisation, you’re going to have to follow it.
7. Shangri-La. You’ve heard a rumour about this road. It goes somewhere. Somewhere special. El Dorado. Atlantis. Camelot. But if you ever want to get there, you’re going to have to follow the road. Don’t stray.

[Why are the two spiders of the superhero world in a car? Because reasons. Reasons that involve Natasha trying to track someone down and wanting to bring Peter along for the ride, because if Tony is going to get a high school kid roped into superhero business, she's going to make sure said young recruit has someone remotely responsible there to have his back.

She is, in fact, always picking up after these Avenger boys (in this particular instance, Tony).

See, the thing was that while there was just an open road with a high speed limit, Natasha was going a solid 25 miles over the speed limit -- way too fast. But now after taking an exit and then a few wrong turns after that, she is ... lost. In the middle of what seems to be nowhere. The GPS device is useless, phone service is useless, and her poor sports car is not made for these kinds of roads they've gotten on.

Eventually, frustrated, she pulls to a stop. And then gives a loud sigh.]

...Do we still have a Cheez-It box? That is the last damn time I trust Stark's stupid new GPS devices.

[It wasn't long after the Day of Story and Song and the final defeat of the Hunger that Taako showed up at Lup's temporary digs at the BoB headquarters, dragged her into one of the orbs, and had Avi launch them off to the middle of fucking nowhere. He finally remembers her, and he remembers their time on the road, a long hundred years of caravan hopping just to survive, and they're bittersweet memories. Memories of struggle, but memories that no longer feature him being haunted by loneliness; now, he treasures these memories, because they are whole again now that she is a part of them once more. They always had fear and hunger, but most of all, they always had each other.

And curse him for feeling a little nostalgia, jeez. One guy wants to remember the nineties and everyone has to jump on his dick 'cause it's cliche or whatever. He's not saying they should bring back frosted tips, fuck.

It's just a road trip for old time's sake. They're of better means now, and hell, the entire world happens to know their names, so they really never have to travel in squalor again, but that just means it's all the nostalgia without the shitty parts. Taako rented the nicest battlewagon he could get ahold of in a tiny nothing town orbiting Goldcliff, and set out on the open road, just Lup and Taako. Taako and Lup. It's no prize winner, but it runs fine, and it has cruise control which means Taako can just press go and lean back, one hand on the wheel, and wait for the first sign of civilization to come up.]

I should've done this forever ago. You know, most of the Bureau thing was a lot of waiting around on a moon for someone to find a fancy rock or whatever, and that's a sweet deal and all, but sometimes you just gotta drive 'til you're too hungry to pass up the seventh greasy fantasy truckstop diner in a row.

[Really, this is just a thinly veiled excuse to catch up with his sister. It's completely obvious to anyone; Taako was a little annoyed when Magnus and Merle both seemed way too cool with the idea of him wandering off for an indeterminate amount of time with Lup to the middle of nowhere. They definitely got it, though. They remembered what the twins were like during that century on the run: inseparable.

They pass a billboard that advertises a tourist shop coming up, and considering they're just off the Woven Gulch by Taako's estimation, there is absolutely no way any tourists ever go there.]

Oh sweet, wonder if they have t-shirts that will tell me where the fuck we are.

For those knowledgeable of canon, he's from after volume 10, possibly post-series, depending on how I wing it... Regardless, for everyone, this means he's missing his right arm.]
