Before this, you had nowhere to go. Nowhere but your own aching body, most likely injured, or your tussled thoughts. You may not even know where to go, your identity stripped from you in whatever hurricane of an action that lead you to be so down and out. But then, someone came along and offered you somewhere to stay. You can't turn that down, no matter how loathe you may be to deal with anyone or owe anyone something.

Or that's how it all begins. As you two stay close together and they nurse you back to full strength - despite your potential complaints - things between you change. You grow closer and more used to each other; then, slowly, what used to be thankfulness and generosity turns into love...or something like it. Affection. Deep adoration.

And somewhere along the line, that itself turns physical.

You're thanking them. You're trying to show them how much you care. You want them to love you more than anyone, because they gave you a chance and a home. You need to seal the deal and do more than just "play house" with them. No matter the case, they've opened their bed to you now, as well. This could be the first time, the last time, or the millionth time, but you'll gladly take their offer.

Sherlock might faintly hear the voice above him. His ears might be ringing from the recent blows to his head.

It had been six months. Sherlock had only gone to supposedly get some information from one of his homeless network contacts about a case. A worthless case, a 6 at best. And yet he'd never come home. Not even Mycroft could find a trace of him. As the days past, John's fear had grown stronger.

Had Sherlock gone into yet another self-imposed exile without even bothering to kill himself this time? Or...was he really dead? Or something even worse?

And now John comes home to find the body of his friend collapsed in the hallway of 221b. Covered in blood and bruises and welts. John checks him over. Recent wounds, sustained over a long period, but no immediate blood loss.

"Sherlock?" He asks, softer once he's calmed down a bit; "...Can you hear me?"
