The Train to the Afterlife Meme

Congratulations: You are dead.

 

Maybe you know how, maybe you don't. Perhaps the memory is fuzzy, or perhaps it's crystal clear down to the look in your comrades' eyes. Maybe it was your time; you've done all you wanted to. Or maybe you weren't at all ready to go, maybe you went out kicking and screaming - but none of it matters. You know you're dead, and the train is taking you to an afterlife. Perhaps an afterlife of your choice; you might've earned that heaven. Or perhaps you've earned something else entirely.

 

It'll be a bit of a journey, though, so you might as well take your time and talk to the other people in your coach. Death knows no place: most of them are strangers, even from faraway worlds. But death knows no time either, so who knows, some of them may be people you know, even if last you knew, they were alive - or long gone.

 

Oh look, here comes the snack cart.

I don't know her, but it sounds like you tried your best for her, and it sounds like she has a good heart, even if she gets angry. Maybe she's on this train, too.

My Servant was Berserker, so I didn't get to know him well. We might have worked together better if I had been able to. We weren't really partners.

That's strange. I wonder what happened. I was the last one born with Magic Circuits. Maybe Sakura's all right, somehow.

Didn't you say she got adopted to be the heir to the Matou family?

[He really doesn't want to make Kariya more depressed, but the idea that a family would die out even after it had adopted an heir didn't bode well.]

She was, yes. [And he does look worried, but he isn't sure what to think about it.]

But I can't guess what could have happened. I don't know what happened after I died.

My brother had a son, too, though he doesn't have magic Circuits. I just don't know...

Then why did they adopt her? Couldn't they just engage the kids?

Because he doesn't have Magic Circuits, like I said. So he might never have a child with Magic Circuits.

That's what happened to my brother. They had him marry someone they thought would give him children with the circuits, but it didn't work. So they wanted to assure someone in the family would have them. That's why.

And she shouldn't be forced to marry someone she doesn't want to, in any case.

I just thought it would be a little less painful for her.

That's right. Things were different then. [He relaxes.] It's fine.

But it did hurt her a lot, I know. [He starts to look sad again.] It would have been better if she could have stayed at home, with her mother and sister.

It wouldn't have happened, even if people did things that way. [As unappealing as that thought is to him.] My family didn't want me anymore. Not after I left them the first time.

Hey, ya know, since I really enjoy threading with you, why don't you come over to Animus?

Again, your family is filled with horrible people. Not even the magi of my time would have done shit like that.

I know. That's why I left them. They're monsters, and I hate them. But maybe something changed. [He'd be happy if his family ended, as long as Sakura was all right.] No one should do things like that.

I told you, I'm not really that nice. I believed I was, but the war changes people.

I think I used to be nice. [His memory of his rage and hatred and the violence he's done is too fresh for him to accept that he still is.] I'm only worried about her. Maybe that's the only nice part of me left.
