I think most people would think being shot feels pretty personal.

[ What sort of troublemaker. That shouldn't feel like such a difficult question. So he tries to give an easy answer. ] I was acting as law enforcement both of those times.

[ In a very, very loose sense, when he got shot. He wasn't sanctioned to be in Florence at the time. He just also never got in trouble for it from work.

And then...fair's fair. ]

What sort of troublemaker are you?

Nothing so bad that it would get me shot, hopefully.

[ She laughs. It's a well-meaning joke, nothing too cruel. ]

But I do perform on stage from time to time which means I'm fully within tomato-range, if my audience doesn't take to me. Of course, they always do - [ If nothing else, then because she's pretty. ] - by the end of the night.

[ Will doesn't take it to be cruel. He scoffs too, mostly just a harsh breath while his eyes close, but it's there.

He watches her, from the corners of his eyes and under the rims of his glasses, when she says she's a performer of some kind. ]

...I can't imagine you're a magician. [ Feels like the easiest way to ask what she does. ]

When it does get magical, it's because of the music, not me, not as such.

[ She can tell that he's indirectly asking and she doesn't mind letting him know, after all, this is how she brands herself. The singer, maybe even with a capital S. So she cocks her head and dons her best diva expression. ]

I'm a jazz singer. I have this little trio that I perform with, we're divine.

[ That's an answer that's worth at least a solid two seconds of face-journeying. Will blinks himself back to earth looking almost amused and just a hint confused. He wasn't expecting that as an answer. ]

Didn't realize that was an option still, these days. Is it-- where would you play? [ He wants to ask if it's a 'specialized club' or something similar, but that - almost sounds like asking her if she's a stripper, and that is not the impression he's getting or wants to give. ]

[ His reaction makes her smile, widely, all teeth and she shakes her head once, mostly to affirm his doubts non-verbally. He's right, she's forced to work an office job during the week, few hours, just enough to pay the bills, but what she lives and breathes to do is singing. Her real life starts Friday afternoon. ]

We're regulars at this small, smokey gay bar, though sometimes we get other gigs, too. Never anything big, but we're having a ball.

[ Will doesn't know a lot about music. He knows even less about enjoying a spotlight. He could theorize about it, what it might feel like to not have your skin try to crawl off as soon as anyone's eyes are on you - let alone a roomful of people - but it's not coming easily.

...Good thing he could just ask. If he could make the words come out, of course. He nods at her reply, he clearly hears her, but it's a bit of staring across the room before he comes back to earth long enough to respond. ]

Why? [ Wow! Great job talking like a human being! ] I mean. How do you...get into that kind of field?

An unrelinquishable passion for jazz. I inherited mine from my dad.

[ One thing is the sisterhood of her band, the personal bonds they share, but another is their love of performing, playing their music for an audience, hearing the response. Just thinking about it makes her feel high and he might be able to tell from her expression, dead serious and enthusiastic in equal measure. ]
