Body Horror Meme


WARNING -- POSSIBLE TRIGGERS (violence, pain, parasites, zombies, etc)

Something's gone wrong. Maybe it was a little parasite, wiggling under your skin. Maybe something bit you that one night in the woods. Maybe someone decided they didn't like you and placed a curse on you, or maybe the local psychotic AI decided she liked you and filled you full of nanites. In any case, you're changing, body and soul. There's no way to stop it. No way to reverse it. And above all, it's the most painful thing you've ever experienced...

HOW IT WORKS:
- Tag the meme, leaving your character name, fandom, and any preferences in the subject line
- Other character tags you
- You tag back, and use the random number generator to select from the following options. Or don't, and do whatever strikes your fancy. If you roll something your character already is, either roll again, go for human, or pick something that otherwise suits your fancy.
- Other character reacts, or is free to also roll on the table
- Play out the results.
- Have fun, but respect the preferences of others.



1. Water-dwelling } You're growing gills, or your skin is turning translucent, or you're sprouting fins, or maybe you're outright turning into some form of sea life. It doesn't matter what you're turning into – what does matter is that you're slowly losing the ability to breathe air, and there's no water in sight...

2. Animal } Something bit you, and you're turning into an animal. Your bones lengthen or perhaps shrink, break, twist, and reform, your teeth lengthen or shorten, and above all, you feel your instincts being overridden. Your senses sharpen; you notice smells you never did before, your vision becomes more sensitive to movement. If you're a predator? Man, these people look mighty tasty. Prey? OHGOD, EVERYTHING IS TERRIFYING. Lizard? Enjoy your new inability to regulate body temperature. Bird? Have fun with the whole beak and hollowing bones. And don't even get us started on insects and arachnids...

3. Parasitic } Something's inside you, and it's changing you from within, chewing up your insides and altering your thoughts. You're not sure how much longer you're going to be you, and when the parasite's going to take over completely...

4. Demonic } You've been meddling with dark powers beyond the ken of mortal man, and it seems you've accidentally sold your soul. Will you be the traditional kind of demon, horns and hooves, or something far more terrifying and ineffable?

5. Undead } No doubt about it, you're dying, but as you are, something's been altered in you. Maybe you're becoming a vampire – and not the fun kind, either, we're talking ugly, ravenous, and mad. Maybe you're a zombie, or a ghoul, and human flesh looks mighty tasty. Or maybe you're just turning into a ghost bent on vengeance. In any case, death is never fun.

6. Cybernetic } Get captured by the Borg? Strapped to an operating table? Injected with nanites? Whatever happened to you, you're slowly turning into something half man, half machine, your squishy bits being replaced by mechanical components.

7. Lovecraftian } You've heard their song, the terrors from beyond the stars, and even now they sing in your blood as your flesh transmutes into something ineffable and unknowable. You revel in the pain you feel even as you seek to spread it, to herald the end of all things... or maybe worse, you're aware of the transition as your mind becomes not your own.

8. Fusion/Hivemind } You begin to fuse with the first person who tagged you – physically, mentally, or both. Soon, you can't tell who is who, which one of you is the real you, as your thoughts become one. Join in the fleshsong, mortal...

9. Inanimate } Your body slowly petrifies and hardens, turning to stone, wood, glass, or something stranger still; or perhaps you liquefy, turning to some kind of liquid, or maybe you dissolve into the air itself.

10. Wildcard / Pick your own } Pick whatever you like, combine a few options, or make up your own.

Duke has two very, very important rules. The first is that you never disrespect the paymaster. As a mercenary, he’s lived through some of the toughest, most grueling, most intense combat situations in the world, but his ability to get work done is second to his ability to follow orders. How could he build up a reputation if he didn’t listen? And the second rule is that he never, ever kills civilians.

Unfortunately for Liquid Snake, he’s not a civilian and Duke’s paymaster has given him ‘extra’ orders. He’s to work with Liquid Snake to a point. Infiltrate the ruins and search for the equipment some soldiers had left behind before they were forced to flee. It’s all sensitive stuff, bombs, guns that could be dangerous in the wrong hands.

But instead of weapons falling into the hands of guerilla warriors or the like, perhaps Liquid Snake should’ve been concerned with the weapon that was in Duke’s hands.

The mercenary took a step back after thrusting a single dagger into Liquid’s chest. He held up his hands defensively—no, dismissively as he regarded his once-ally. It was a shame. In another world, they could have built a lasting friendship. In this world, Duke was instructed to stab an ancient relic of a knife into Liquid Snake’s chest so that when his body was found they’d pin the murder on a local.

“You don’t take offense, right?” Though he felt remorse, Duke felt it would’ve been rude to emote more than necessary over the betrayal he was committing. “Blame your higher-ups. Whatever’s in here, they want you to die with it.” He placed his hands on his hips as he watched a familiar stain form on Liquid’s shirt where the dagger remained thrust through his heart. A few seconds, and it’d all be over.

Or so he thought. Duke never once considered the possibility that this mission was supposed to end in both of their deaths, or that the dagger he’d used was filled with a strange energy that the paymaster thought would bring about the end of both of them and the temple they found themselves working in.

[Any option is fine! Flagg would probably work best as the one inflicting the body horror, either because the other character pissed him off and he's punishing them, they pledged themselves to him and he's doing what he wants with them, or he's just plain bored.]

Enough physical damage, enough gunfire or fire or anything else, and a short time later it's as if none of it happened. Ginger's died and revived at least a half dozen times since arriving in Maine. (Drowning. Blunt force trauma. Fire. Acid. Gunfire.) It's exhausting. If only she'd gotten stamina to match the functional immortality.]

[It had been a very, very long time since any of them had seen or heard from their saniwa. Many had already left, some to return - shaken and scared - and more to never be seen after their backs had left sight of the citadel. No one ever spoke of those who, from dark thoughts or dark intentions, had slowly but surely had their bodies twisted and damaged, had come to look and think more like the retrograding force they'd once fought, had had to be quietly put down by former friends and comrades.

It wouldn't have been so terrible if the corruption was quick, if it swept through the remnants of the citadel overnight. Instead, it would seep slowly into the steel of their being, would manifest in only a few swords at a time, would flicker in and out of being in short bursts, would degrade the mind by simply reducing one to wondering at when it would strike next - and fully.

But just as no one spoke of the plight sweeping over the citadel, no one wanted to believe it was irreversible, no one wanted to be the one to strike down a friend before they'd lost themselves to madness. This, too, led to swords in the early stages of corruption sequestering themselves off, lingering in empty, dusty rooms and the shade of the back porch of the citadel, ghosts of themselves in slow-burning agony.

It was there one could find a one Souza Samonji. He'd been there for some time, not out of any especially strong willpower keeping him cognizant, but because of how little he'd cared from the start. Today saw him sitting outdoors, cup of tea in one hand, the other sitting uselessly in his lap as bits and pieces of what looked to be an enemy tantou shifted under the skin of his arm, breaking through every so often and staining his sleeve with blood. His expression was tired, pained, though at the sound of someone approaching, he'll shift to face them and put on as pleasant a greeting as he can manage.]

[So maybe he'd gotten a little too into this whole cultural tour with England. Wandering around abandoned buildings in search of ghosts and fae was one thing, but a demonstration of ancient magic? He should've known things would turn out all screwy.

If he were a character in a horror movie, he'd have yelled at himself a dozen times over. Creepy setting in the form of a dimly-lit basement? Check. A tome filled with ancient runes that even England looked like he was having trouble reading? Check. A fake-out jumpscare, courtesy of a shadow distorting at the edge of his vision, candlelight playing tricks on his eyes? You betcha.

The sight startled America so much that he jumped back, knocking into a nearby shelf. A few dusty old things teetered and then fell off, one particularly large jar cracking over his head. With his strength and pain tolerance, it didn't hurt so bad, but the shattered glass cut into his forehead, and ugh, he'd thought, cuts on the face always bleed the worst.

He'd leaned forward with a groan, a trail of blood already cutting down his nose. It dripped once, twice, three times onto the open tome on the floor in front of them, and that was when the lights cut out.

Now, as they sit in total darkness -- a darkness somehow thicker than the usual, more all-encompassing -- America feels the strangest sort of dread creep down his spine. It doesn't feel like he has any control of it, like it's been foisted upon him instead of occurring naturally. He shudders.]
