The Witch's Curse


A fantasy AU meme where witches are real, and they are vengeful. Specify your character's role: the witch (or sorcerer), the subject of the curse, or the curse breaker. Tag around and pick or RNG a curse.

1: Change of Form: human turned animal, mythical beast turned human, human turned inanimate object, human made older/younger, the possibilities are endless

2: Obeisance: you are now cursed to follow the witch's every command and it's useless to resist, or perhaps you simply have to obey every command given you no matter who gives it

3: Curse of Sleep: like princesses before you, you are cursed to sleep for all eternity, or at least until your one true love finds you

4: Possession: be it a demon or any other kind of spirit, your body is no longer your own

5: Isolation: some witches use towers, others use forests of thorns, but either way the message is clear-- you are never seeing the outside world again

6: Resurrection: even death is not an escape from the witch's power, for some can raise the dead

7: Bad Luck: some curses are more minor, only causing you to stub your toe or drop your books, but they're still annoying

8: Defects: you weren't turned to an inhuman shape, but were somehow made hideous, clumsy, or repellent in some way-- maybe you smell terrible, or maybe people who get near you just feel uneasy and want to leave

9: Wounds: you have a wound that simply won't heal-- maybe it's slowly killing you, maybe it's just annoying, but it's not going away

10: Monster Magnet: wherever you go you're always being attacked by creatures, demons or monsters or ghosts, etc, that want to kill you

11: Never to Meet: you become an animal during the day while your true love is human, then you switch forms at night, so you can never both be human at the same time again

12: Death: your death is approaching and you need to find a way to avert it or remove the curse entirely

13: Objectification: you didn't avoid the death curse, and now your soul is bound to an inanimate object, perhaps to provide more power for the witch, to bind a spell to the object and give it power, or maybe just so you can't move on to your next life

14: Cursed Object: maybe it wasn't the witch themselves, but something that used to belong to a witch that put the curse on you, and now you must find a witch who can remove the curse

15: Cursed Ground: your house is built somewhere it really should not have been, and now you have to deal with ghosts or demons or the undead, which will really ruin your property value

16: Wildcard: choose your own adventure!

[Clint doesn't seem to be alone in that decision. Steve and Wanda fall back after a moment too, and Thor, looking confused. Natasha doesn't hold back, and in her current form, with the witch robbed of her focus, Natasha is more than a match for her. Eventually, she drives her clawed, armored fingers under the witch's ribs and drains the heat from her body, dumping her to the ground in a frozen heap.

And then nothing happens.

Natasha closes her eyes, the flames hidden briefly, but there's nothing else. The spell animating her doesn't end immediately. She doesn't fall to the ground herself. She doesn't become any more human, that's for sure.

It's not what she expected.]

[After a moment of silence, Clint creeps up beside her, clamping a hand on her shoulder.] You feel like getting some coffee? I think they can clean up from here.

[outstandingbalance]

[She waits another moment, and there's still no change. She looks up, glances around them, her gaze finally settling on him in the end.

None of this makes sense.]

I'm not sure I can.

[seesbetter]

Wouldn't be the first time we had to figure out some weird shit. Maybe we're supposed to melt you.

[outstandingbalance]

You can't melt me. This isn't—

[She shakes her head slightly. She doesn't even know how to get this through to him, how to make it sink in. She's not just a little funny for a while, it's not just a thing in her head.]

That doesn't start your heartbeat.

[seesbetter]

And maybe you can keep going without one.

[He'll pull her arm slightly, trying to get her back moving again.]

If you've gotta live with this, then we'll figure out how to live with it.

[outstandingbalance]

I can't live with it. I'm not alive. [She comes with him, but her posture is strange, both too stiff and too loose somehow.] I'm not even human.

[seesbetter]

Yeah, well we've been follecting more and more of those types lately. You didn't stop being you.

[outstandingbalance]

[He's always so stubborn about things like this. She doesn't argue further now, letting herself be led.

They have to go back to Asgard anyway. Maybe there will be someone there who can talk reason into a human who's trying to save the dead.]

[seesbetter]

[First stop is a coffee shop, no matter how many stares they get. What, like they've never seen an undead warrior before?]

[outstandingbalance]

Really, Clint? You're scaring people.

[He might not be bothered by the stares, but Natasha is. Even knowing she's probably unrecognizable.]

[seesbetter]

Well then they should be more accepting to people's differences.

[He huffs, glaring down a rubbernecking couple.]

[outstandingbalance]

They're not wrong, Clint. You don't have to force this.

[seesbetter]

And I don't have to let you wallow in whatever you're wallowing in either.

[outstandingbalance]

I am not wallowing. [She's lost. And cold. Her emotions weirdly distant. That's not wallowing.

She doesn't think she's wallowing.]

[seesbetter]

If you're not wallowing, then you can sit down with me and have a damn cup of coffee like normal people do.

[outstandingbalance]

[Natasha's eyes flash brighter in frustration and the air around her gets colder.]

Fine. Get coffee. It doesn't matter.

[seesbetter]

I will. [SO THERE. He'll be back in five with caffeine.]

[outstandingbalance]

[There is an undead abomination waiting for you in Starbucks, Clint. Is that what he wanted? He better be happy about this.]

[seesbetter]

[Happy is a strong word, but he's not angry about it. He'll slide across the table from her and pass over her usual order, as normal as normal can be.]

[outstandingbalance]

[This has to be some kind of joke. This isn't what hell is like, is it? It can't be.

The coffee goes cold almost immediately in her hands but she'll sit and go through the motions of drinking it. It doesn't taste like anything, though.

She doesn't try to continue the conversation.

It's not impossible that Black Widow is sulking.]

[seesbetter]

[It's not out of character for her. But going through the motions is a two-way street, and so Clint will fill the silence to the best of his ability.]

So then, outta nowhere? She tells me to check with Fury about it. Like that's a thing that can still happen, am I right?

[outstandingbalance]

What...? [Natasha looks up, surprised and confused. She is almost convinced nothing actually came before it.]

[seesbetter]

You weren't listening to me at all, were you?

[He sips his sugary frappuccino, quietly judging.]

[outstandingbalance]

[She wasn't. Not there for a moment... she's not sure how long, actually. It's easy to lose track of time without breathing and heartbeats and other little sounds and rhythms to keep track.]
