Sometimes, you have to tell the truth. No, I mean, you have to. Maybe it's magic, or a promise, or nanobots; who knows. But you have to tell the truth, and everyone knows it. Of course, do half-tuths count? What about lying by omission? That's up to you, and how far you want this curse, this ailment, to go. The only thing that can't be escaped is the truth, whatever form that truth takes.

[joseph listens. very closely. honestly, he's been skeptical from the start that robert would ever give a shit about the church or mingling in it. and it's not like it's required, but. the fact that he and mary do it all the time, that it's become staple, a routine? joseph knows far too well the reaction to that just ending would not be good. something that's been happening for years and is some kind of aspiration to so many members. and somehow, word would get out that joseph was with someone else. that he would not bring that 'someone else' to the events, or that 'someone else' chose not to come, or... a million other things.

it'd be nice if community perception wasn't such a huge thing. but it is. he keeps eyeing robert, brow furrowed ever so slightly.

in a low voice:]

... I really do wish it were different.

[maybe in another town. or in another life.]

[gruffs]

[ that doesn't help. it just makes robert look a absolutely wrecked as his head jerks up and he stares at joseph for a long moment. then his eyes close as he takes a breath and he stands up, hands clenched at his sides. when he speaks, it's low and soft. ]

I believe you.

[ he does, really, which is probably what makes all of this so much worse. he knows joseph wants different, maybe even wants him the same way in return, but he also knows joseph would never make moves to change the situation -- only carry along inside of it. going against the grain like that, that's just not something joseph's built for. ]

I'm gonna go.

[ and so he does, hands shoving into his leather jacket as he turns to leave because well, he asked his questions. he's had enough. he needs to be alone now. ]
