Apprentice-shipping
![]() From the moment we begin our lives, we're learning. It's imperative to surviving, to growing - don't walk in the shadows, it's dangerous, don't touch the fire, you'll be hurt. These days, most continue to hone this natural instinct with formal schooling, but that's certainly not the end all, be all of knowledge. If you go to school or not, if you have the opportunity or otherwise, you won't stop sharpening your mind after those formative years. That's just not the way our incredible brains work. You, specifically, have actually decided to something equally incredible: you want to really dedicate yourself to learning a skill, and what better way than an apprenticeship? Formal or informal, you're under someone's tutelage, absorbing everything they can teach, growing closer to them in the process... ...unfortunately, though, you've gained a little something extra with that bite from the fruit of knowledge. You've fallen for your mentor. Do you realize this pitfall immediately, or will you have to learn the hard way?

Cool, setting this a week or two post CW
It's funny how things always seem to start out small. While Coulson remained in the shadows, directing the rebuild of SHIELD and even invoking the Triad Protocol to provide a spare helicarrier to help save Sokovian innocents, he never quite stopped looking after the Avengers.
So when Steve Rogers came to him looking for a favor, Coulson listened. Barton, Sam, Steve, they could handle living life under the radar. They had the training and the expertise to do it. But not Wanda. She needed both protection and training and if Steve could trust anyone with her care, it was Phil.
So here he is, waiting in a diner in Wheeling West Virginia of all places, drinking a cup of day old coffee and waiting for her to arrive. Her file was already built from the ground up, a Sokovian refugee who manifested Inhuman abilities and would train with the other Inhumans who were now part of SHIELD.
Not exactly a lie, but it wasn't exactly the truth either.]

She couldn't control the fears of others, but she could control her own. Though it was solely tempting to give in, make people think she truly was the monster they believed her to be, but the thoughts were never turned into actions. She was trying to make up for the sins she committed in the past...and she would continue to do so with or without the label of monster.
Coming up to the diner was a beat up Tahoe, with Steve driving and Wanda in the passenger side. Both wore hats and sunglasses to keep their faces hidden. Steve was trying to give Wanda space, but he encouraged her to trust Coulson. They spoke in hushed voices and parted with Wanda giving her teammate a sad smile. She got out of the car with a duffle bag in hand and went inside the diner. She spotted Coulson and took a seat across from him. ]
Take it you're Agent Coulson?

He offers her a mild smile.] Call me Phil. 'Agent' is probably a little too cloak and dagger for a town like this.
Steve sent me your file, and I've done a fair amount of reading on my own. [He and Maria Hill still kept in touch now and then.] You need a place to train but more importantly you need a place that's safe. We can give that to you.

A bitter chuckle left her lips. ]
Forgive me if I don't take your word for it. [ The notion of feeling "safe" anywhere was laughable. She thought the Tower was her home, a safe place, but it was her prison for a few days---without her knowledge. Tony placed her under house arrest and made Vision her warden. That was fun--not. ]

An easy nod as he settles up the bill.]
It's okay. I know it'll take some time. But I think we can help you. Daisy has already built a file, you can join SHIELD right away.

She gives him a blank stare. Doesn't Coulson know what happened to the last team she joined? The one that was soon divided in half? The one that went to war with itself?]
You want me to join your group? One that was a sector or part of the Avengers? [Coulson will have to do more to convince her.]
no subject
SHIELD may not be perfect, but I trust my team. We've been through a lot together, including getting that helicarrier to Sokovia in time. [They've had their own internal struggles, sure. But Coulson has faith in his people.]
I can't force you to make that decision. Steve called me because he trusted me to help you, and I trust his assessment of you.
no subject
And without that helicarrier, they would've lost more lives.]
I didn't know. I assumed it was Steve or someone in the Avenger's doing. We were trying to get so many people to safety.
[But they still lost people. Good innocent people...but she couldn't dwell on that. She needed to stay focus and figure out what she needed to do. If Steve could trust Coulson and his team, maybe she could too.]
I'm not...eager to join another team, but...I will strongly consider joining yours, Coulson.

It'll be a learning process for us both, I think. But if we can agree to work together I think we can consider that a good start.

It was amazing to be able to learn from someone who had abilities similar to her own. The chance to go full force, not holding back for fear of harming him. She studied with Stephen, learning as much as she could. Over the past weeks, the apprenticeship turned into a friendship. Stephen Strange was a handsome man, there was no denying that. However, Wanda had to keep herself from thinking beyond that. He was her teacher, her friend. He could not be anything else. She didn't want to change the dynamics between them or create friction within the team.
So she ignored the way her heart fluttered each time he gave her a soft smile or when he touched her, adjusting and correcting her form. It was a stupid crush, really and in time it would fade away.
For now, she was focused on meeting with him for their daily lesson. ]

But Stephen still felt on probation, to an extent, as a sorcerer, and so for that and many other reasons, he pushed aside his less than appropriate thoughts whenever he and the young woman were together. It was easy enough when he discovered how quick and clever she was, and how much they had to teach one another about the nature of sorcery.
As today's lesson would likely to prove taxing physically, Stephen greeted his student in a large, open chamber far too massive for the Sanctum's outward appearance, wearing only a simple blue tunic with his trousers and boots, rather than his full complement of robes. He'd suggested Wanda dress for working hard, as well.
Stephen smiled as she entered.]
Right on time as always. How are you today?
no subject
She came dressed to the sanctum in black form fitting work out pants complete with a scarlet top and thing jacket. Her hair was tied back in a pony tail, wanting to keep each strand away from her face. It was better this way, just in case they ended up playing with fire and got too close to it. Though her outfit was meant to help with their training, it certainly hugged her curves and showed off her body.
There was a nod of her head, followed by a soft smile of her own.]
I'm well, happy I'm not late. I thought I was going to be, but here I am. [She made it in one piece, and that's what really mattered, didn't it?]
Yourself? [It was still hard to figure out if she should call him Stephen (too personal, not professional), Teacher (which he was), or Master (which he was, considering she was learning from him). There was Doctor Strange, but that sounded too formal for her tastes.]
What will we be going over today?

[It was a fascinating balance between both teaching and learning when it came to his time with Wanda. Although he knew quite a bit and had found it surprisingly easy to apply the techniques and principles he'd learned from the Ancient One to Wanda's powers, her manipulation of magic was not exactly like his own, either. Just another reason to continue working with her.
He was, also, still a mortal man and he did not miss the way Wanda's clothes fitted her, giving him more than a few fleeting inappropriate thoughts. Stephen had always kept himself fit, but sorcery training was suprisingly physical, and his sleeveless tunic displayed some of that as well.]
Doing well, Wanda, thank you.
[He wasn't one to stand on much formality, and so he never pressed her to call him anything in particular.]
I'm assuming you've been given some instruction in self defense? I've been finding lately that I've had to go toe-to-toe with adversaries of late, and I thought it would be a nice change of pace to study how to incorporate magic into hand-to-hand combat.
