It was strange, how ones life had to completely fall apart before one could see that everything had come before had been unimportant. He had served the British crown as he had been taught, he had obeyed orders because men who claimed to be his betters had commanded it. He had restrained himself when the man he loved was married, because he had been taught his feelings were unfit to share, and that duty came before love. He had allowed pomp to fill his days with pointless business. He had allowed duty to come between him and the sea.

By rights he should have been killed in the attack. Killed or ransomed back to the Navy for his weight in gold, but he had not been. He had lost his wing and his hat in the struggle, had taken a blow to the back of the head from a pistol butt, and by the time he had come to, Port Royal, the Dauntless, and his old life had been far, far away. What man would have welcomed being pressed into servitude upon a pirate ship? What man would not have wished for death? His previous self had done, had cried out for the release of death, but it had never come. He was not the sort to give up and die.

But perhaps he had. Perhaps the Commodore had died, in the stinking bilges where he had been chained for those first few months. When the chains had finally been unfastened, the man that stood had been James Norrington, a man who could climb rigging as fast as any other, a man who could be part of a gun crew as well as lead one. James Norrington was not a man removed from his peers by rank and by breeding, but amongst them, capable and quick.

A man with ambition. A man who saw no future now in the navy, a man who knew his one-time colleagues would assume him gone. There was no point in returning.

Well, there was a reason. Two, although he had no expectation of seeing Horatio Hornblower. But as his crew had slunk into the bay outside of Port Royal in darkness and fog, James had seen the light in his old study, and he knew the man who sat there now. He knew that Horatio did not deserve what was about to happen, but James had given a life-time in service, and now he would take what he was owed.

That had been a long time ago. He had taken back the Dauntless, left her crew on the spit of land beyond the breakers, and felt joy swell his heart. They would send men after him, of that he was sure, but James knew the waters of the Indies. He knew each chart that had been felt in the chests aboard the Dauntless, and he had no intention of being caught. He knew what his punishment would be, and he saw no reason to court it.

They sailed to India, to the bright spice markets and the public baths, they made port in Shanghai and then hugged the coast of Africa, watching the strange dark interior slip by. They boarded Dutch merchantmen, forced French trading vessels to surrender, captured a beautiful Spanish ship, her cabins painted like a Catholic chapel. They avoided the privateers that dogged them, slipped out of port before the authorities could seize their cargo,

And then they returned. They returned and within weeks, James heard the news. The Admiralty (including Admiral Lawrence Norrington, by all accounts) had grown sick of the embarrassment and unpleasant questions asked in parliament, had demanded his "traitorous" head. And the pompous old fools had sent Horatio Hornblower to collect it. James had relished the idea, the challenge of outrunning Horatio on the open sea, but perhaps he had underestimated the young man. Horatio was dedicated, he was ingenious, and he knew James better than any other soul.

That was why they were here now. The Hotspur was a fast ship, faster by far than the Dauntless but with only half the firepower, had caught them up in the mass of islands north of Cuba, and there James had stopped running. He had waited for Horatio's move, the two ships making no move to open fire.

James raises the eye-glass, watching the figures on the Hotspur's deck. He can name every single one of the officers, give or take some of the younger Midshipmen. He can doesn't need the glass to know which of the men is Horatio Hornblower, and he lowers it before he can clearly make out the man's expression.

"Lower a boat!" He calls, passing the eye-glass to a promising young man, recently escaped from the plantations. "Offer them parley."
