Dystopia AU

Dystopia AU

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.

1. Stronghold - Inside the walls, we are safe. Outside the walls, there is only madness, desolation, and thirst. Everything you need is here. Mother protects us. Mother sees to all our needs. To defy or to question Mother is to put all our lives at risk.
2. Rebels against the Government - You know each other only by code names. You’ve met each other only within the safety of illegal, anonymous networks. You can only hope and trust that they are loyal to your cause, and that none of this is a trap.
3. Re-education - Once, you questioned. Once, you doubted. You know this, but you have learned of your folly. The Ludovico technique of aversion therapy is unparalleled at rehabilitating criminals. Traitors. So-called ‘free-thinkers’. You’re better now. Isn’t it wonderful, to be a productive and unquestioning member of society?
4. The Ministry of Culture - Art is lies, and lies are forbidden. Love is treachery, and treachery is forbidden. Sex is deviance, and deviance is punishable by death. History is regression, and regression is a crime. Music is rebellion, and rebellion is intolerable. Any citizens found in possession of deviant and false publications will be punished.
5. Population Control - Resources are finite. There are too many mouths to feed and not enough arable land. Which is why you have been chosen to be culled. Only the strongest, the smartest, and the most resourceful are needed in the new society. One person from your group will be permitted to survive and to return to society, richly rewarded. Everyone else must die. Weapons are right over there.
6. The Helpmeet (Smut Option) - It’s a stressful life, working for the government and helping to protect the fragile values of our society. Maybe it’s your way of surviving, of rebelling, maybe it’s the only thing you’ve ever known. And in recognition, in appreciation of your loyalty and service, the government has provided you with a Helpmeet. The Helpmeet is an eager, obedient warm body, waiting for you at your home, thinking of nothing but your pleasure. You’ve heard rumors that the Helpmeets are former rebels and traitors, re-educated into obedience and now serving this important social function. You’ve also heard rumors that Helpmeets are engineered in a lab to be what they are. Either way, there’s no reason for you to question it. No need to think about how you treat them. They’re not real people, after all.

[ Dean was tired. Actually, no. He'd gone past tired. He felt like a goddamn zombie, wrecked inside and out. He'd slept, now and again, snatched sleep in abandoned cars, locked from the inside and hunkered down under a blanket in the back seat. There was looting, killing--you'd think that death raining down from the skies might kill capitalism dead, but people were still stealing televisions from abandoned shops, and cops were still shooting people for it, like anyone cared.

It seemed like a waste of energy to Dean. Some of these places that had been struck, it was recent enough that there might be people still trapped within. He'd worked almost ceaselessly pulling people from the wreckage of cars and buildings for days now, but even he had to admit that the chances of anyone having survived, been trapped, and still being alive now, were getting slim.

It was crazy. Dean had no idea if it went further than the city. It wasn't in his head to try and find out. At the moment, the idea of an apocalypse was something distant, beyond the present. Thoughts of vampires coming out in LA, admitting to their existence, and therefore changing the world forever, had been completely forgotten. Maybe that was the point. Maybe this was a freak accident. Maybe one of those frustrated Greek gods was having a fit that they weren't important enough any more, and humanity had to pay. He had no idea, and right now, saving lives had come out on top as the more important goal.

Wherever Sam was, Dean hoped he was okay, that his brother was alive, that he had a better idea of what was going on, and could maybe do something about it. Dean was loosely formulating a plan to get out of the city, as soon as there was no more good that he could do here. He'd head for Frisco, then take route 66 east. If Sam was okay, they had a meeting place set up, just in case anything like this happened. He'd find his brother there, no doubt; nothing to worry about.

Dean froze, falling very still. Someone was tapping underneath the rubble. It sounded weak, but they were still alive--if he could just reach them. He started to pull at the broken, scorched cement, rolling the largest pieces away, and yelled for help, not that he expected any.

[The night's been riddled with depressing discovery after depressing discovery. More and more friends are being dug up. And in pieces. The government--both human and Kindred--is in shambles. The rioting and looting is at an all-time high. Sam's never really loved LA before. But now it's something out of a nightmare.

She's done her best to help out where she can. Avery's been on the go, trying to pull together clues. He seems to think there's a giant conspiracy that'll go bad, like milk out of the fridge.

Maybe he's right.

But Sam can't bring herself to care about the long-term. Not when the short-term is so bleak and there are so many people with only hours, if not minutes, left to live.

At least she doesn't have to give a damn about open-carry laws any more. She's got her revolver in one hand, a crow bar in the other. For the most part, she'd been breaking up fights with her powers. No point in trying to be subtle when there's no internet. But it's not like she's stronger than a teenage Goth chick. So...crow bar.

She hears someone calling for help before she sees him. A not-unfortunate-looking guy. Not one she would figure for a Good Samaritan. But maybe not every pretty boy in LA just wants to get into the movies.]

Hey.

[She trots over to him, tucking her revolver into the back of her waistband.]

You sure?

(ooc: I only just realized the PB I chose shares a face with another Walking Dead character as I tagged you so we can assume it's before they met if you're interested. Ahem.

Waylon Parker is from Outlast: Whistleblow, which is a first-person horror game. However, I'm an avid fan of the Walking Dead so I would be more than happy to make his horror experience be at the hands of zombies instead if you're interested. )
ramblingman: (Disbelief)

[ Honestly, Dean was stunned that anyone else still cared. Most of the people he'd run into so far were either opportunists or spent in the face of what they'd seen to even think about trying to help anyone else any more. They'd heard too many screams, seen too many people buried under rubble and burned alive. The shellshock was real.

Maybe for Dean it was too, but he was resilient, pushed it deeper into his mind, because he'd seen it all before. He'd seen the end of the world. He'd been there when Heaven itself had abandoned humanity and given up the fight. This was different, because it was - as far as he could tell - completely real. This was no witch's spell meant to make him feel like he was suffering through an apocaylpse. It was no joke, no mystery, and no angels had it in for him--at least not that he knew of. No, this was the real thing, and that meant "no backsies".

It meant he had to suck it up and save lives, and worry about where the dust fell later. He didn't even notice how attractive his helper was, or really pay much attention to her gun - everyone seemed to be armed at the moment - instead just dragging rocks aside, digging in earnest. He hadn't the energy to spare vitriol, even if he wasn't grateful--which he was. He could do with the help, his muscles aching from all he'd put them through already.
]

Yeah, I'm sure. I heard tapping.

[ And that was all he told her. He kept on digging, aware that every piece of concrete or plaster he moved might have repercussions somewhere below him, remembering how it felt, claustrophobic and paralyzing, to be trapped beneath a wrecked building. It would be horrible to die like that. ]

[It's enough for Sam. If the guy is secretly a douche canoe, trying to entrap her or something, she'll shoot him. Okay, not really, but she'll definitely make him regret it. But for now, he gets the benefit of the doubt. And she immediately sets to work, using the crow bar to start shifting away the rubble.

Somewhere, in the back of her mind, she can hear a snort of derision from Jericho. Why bother to go through all of this trouble for a lousy human life? A kine. That's what he'd say. Well. Fuck him. Sam just isn't old enough or jaded enough to think that people, that individuals don't matter. And she fucking hopes she never gets to that point. Because if she does, she'll need to take a short walk into the sunrise.

...not that she hasn't considered it already. Once or twice.]

I think this used to be a laundromat. Costumers from indie movies would wash their shit here.

[ It definitely looks like it could work out! We can just assume that he's different enough to the TWD character that it wouldn't be a thing he thinks of, rather than playing with facetwin stuff if that's okay? No need to backdate like that.

So we could assume that whatever happens at the Asylum spreads, and is responsible for the plague that hits the country, something like that? And Waylon's survived it right from the outbreak. Could be interesting!
