[ A dreary day, but nothing a heavy coat can't fend off. Lieutenant Prior finds himself thinking that he prefers it, that the moodiness of the landscape outside is much more fitting than the grandeur held within the walls of Downton Abbey.

A hospital. He huffs out a puff of cigarette smoke — the last of it — his head shaking slowly as he focuses out over the landscape. They've done a job of repairing the broken, the mangled, but officers only, from what he's heard. It's that rumor that's brought him here, all the way from the Ministry of Munitions, uninvited but too curious to bypass the opportunity.

Being an officer, he shouldn't taken exception, but as with all things regarding the subject of class — and make no mistake, class is every bit as evident in the ranks as it is outside of them — Prior is at odds with the world (and, in some ways, always, always at odds with himself). Why else would he come here with no injuries and no proper orders to do so, but to prove another point he'd known since childhood: those who have will always have, those who don't wont.

He's only just commiserating with himself for the umpteenth time when he turns on his heel and spots Mary and her entourage entering through the front door.
