A soulmate (or soul mate) is believed by some to be the person with whom one has a feeling of deep or natural affinity, similarity, love, sex, intimacy, sexuality, spirituality, or compatibility.
In our world, the concept of soulmates is quaint, but frankly antiquidated. But somewhere out there, in the vast cosmos, there is a world that still values this tradition. No, not just values. Society is practically built around it. After all, they've found the powers of the soulmates. When they're together, both halves of the whole can find a peace that is desired by all; not only that, either, but also the two can unlock the. Everyone is believed to have a soulmate, and those who have yet to find there's a sense of emptiness that cannot be filled by other distractions. There are few limits on who can be destined for each other. The fates have often chosen people completely opposite of each other, some even on opposing sides or factions. Attraction between soulmates is instantaneous upon the first meeting, though relationship styles can very. It's almost always romantic, but sometimes not sexual, despite that usually being the case. Some even say that procreation can only be done by soulmates, but that's only a rumor and highly untested. Yet this bond is not always sunlight and rainbows. You'll practically feel each other emotions

The problem, of course, comes in finding one (if you even want to at all, as some rebel against the system as much as they can). How many people are out there, and what's the probability of finding them in a lifetime? What if they're not in the same country or even the same planet! There's also the dilemma of having only one soulmate. Though people can have plenty of lovers, those in this world can only find true satisfaction from their other half.

It's a twisted and difficult web, and sometimes unmatched people can face prejudice from those around them and the established order, but finding that one special person is said to trump all of that.

He tried to deepen his scowl, make himself look more menacing and badass, but the blush still covering his cheeks didn't help in the least. "Thanks," he said, sarcastically. "I'd hate for my patients to lose respect for me because they heard a pretty girl call me 'adorable.'"

...wait. Crap. He'd said that part aloud. Goddammit.

He was married. He was married to a woman Ruby had never actually met but who was, nonetheless, probably very nice. This was what she kept telling herself over and over. An effort to slow her heart, which seemed to be beating at twice it's usual speed. Something she would never quite understand. Guys had called her pretty before. Granted it was usually said mid-makeout while they were trying to get into her pants, but still....

Teeth pulling at her lower lip, one brow arched slowly and her voice lowered. After all, this wasn't necessarily something the entire diner needed to be able to hear. "You think I'm pretty, huh?"

Leonard didn't look at her, focusing on his coffee instead, taking another sip as it cooled a little bit more.

"Yeah, well." He tried to sound grouchy. "You are. It's just a thing."

Feeling a little of that old confidence returning to herself, knowing what he thought of her certainly helped, she pulled a chair up to sit directly beside him. Something Granny would doubt chew her out for in the not so distant future. But for right now, she wasn't quite ready to leave.

Lips quirked up into a devious little smirk, one long leg crossed over the other as she searched his face. "So why do you sound so upset about that?"

Leonard still didn't look at her, even as she sank into the seat across from him and - oh, God, she was crossing her legs and Jesus H they were about ten miles long and perfectly shaped.

"It's not exactly an acceptable thing for married men to tell other women they're pretty."

And there it was again. He's married. With the ring on his finger and everything, she can it from here without even looking. But that doesn't stop her from shifting in her seat, that smirk melting off her face as she plasters on her very best, most innocent expression.

"It's not a crime to think another girl's pretty, is it? It's not like you did anything....inappropriate."

"No, I guess not." He looked up at her, finally, just after the smirk disappeared and as the innocent expression settled in. "Besides, it's not like it's a secret, is it?"

"I suppose it's not." She acknowledged. As humble as ever. "But I don't usually hear it from somebody who's not trying to sleep with me." Perhaps, after what they just went over, she should be a little ashamed of saying it, but that wouldn't make it any less true. "You shouldn't discount yourself, though. Adorable might not be the best word, but you're a handsome guy."

Leonard flushed slightly, taking another swig of his coffee, lowering his eyes again. "You might be pretty, but you must have something wrong with your eyes, you think I'm handsome."

Her grin returning in full force, she shifted to the edge of the chair, until her leg just barely grazed his own. "I'll have you know there's absolutely nothing wrong with my vision. You just need to learn to accept the truth." And then, almost as an afterthought. "Your wife's a lucky woman."

He felt his cheeks get warmer as her leg unquestionably brushed against his, and he clutched his coffee more tightly, like he could use it as a shield. "That's what she seems to think, too. I guess."

"You guess?" It was a genuine question this time, at least. Ruby had never understood the institution of marriage if she were perfectly honest, but she liked to thin that if she ever did get married, they wouldn't question her opinion of them. Glancing down at the cup in his hand and half expecting to hear a crack any moment, she reached out to cover his hand with hers. An attempt to get him to relax. "She is. If she doesn't see that, then she's missing out."

That made Leonard tense up a bit more, tightly enough that he was actually a little worried his mug might break. He forced himself to loosen his grip, a smile that didn't reach his eyes on his face.

"Yeah, well, like I said, she gets it." And she sure wouldn't appreciate this.

"That's good, then." Her hand covering his for just a moment more, Ruby searched his face intently before finally pulling back. Plastering on a bright smile that was just as fake as his own, she pushed herself up from the chair. The very least she could do was pretend to work.

"Right. Is there anything else I can get for you?"

"Ah." Leonard didn't really want anything else, but he wanted Ruby to stick nearby. "What d'you have in the way of pastries?"

(She wasn't quite all business, despite having no idea what she wanted to do with the rest of her life, she knew it wasn't this, she was slightly more professional as she straightened. That professionalism was, no doubt, somewhat diminished by the fact that the apron she wore was longer than her shorts, and her t-shirt had been tied up to reveal a flat expanse of ivory skin)

We don't have too much right now. Blueberry muffins, marble pound cake....or cherry danish is really good, though. You should definitely try that.

"Cherry danish sounds great, then," Leonard replied, trying not to stare at said expanse of flat ivory skin as the waitress straightened up. "Let's do that."

If nothing else, Granny couldn't argue that she didn't know how to make a sale. "Great! I'll be right back with that." With an amused little smirk, she turned on her heel, hips swaying as she ducked behind the counter to pull said danish out of the display case to cut a piece.

It was delivery just a moment later with a little flourish, fork and napkin sat down beside it. "You know, you come here all the time and I think this is the first time you've ordered anything other than coffee."

Leonard took the danish with a nod of thanks, picking up the fork and poking absently at the flaky crust. At her comment, he lifted his eyes to her, shrugged a shoulder.

"I guess before I just wasn't hungry."

...oh Jesus Christ on a cracker that sounded bad. Feeling his ears turn red, Leonard ducked his head, focusing on the danish.

Were she a lesser woman, her cheeks might have turned the very same shade of red as her lipstick, or even the uniform (and yet somehow non-regulation) shorts. But despite the sudden racing of her pulse, the only outward sign that she had heard him was the devilish little smirk.

"Well you won't regret it." Bending low until her lips were just beside his ear, her voice was nothing but a sultry whisper when she spoke. "My cheery is delicious."

Leonard's breath caught in his throat, and his fork clattered from suddenly numb fingers. It skittered off the edge of the table and landed on the floor with a tinkle. Flushing as red as Ruby's lipstick, he leaned over to grab it, mumbling an apology.

Looking just a little too pleased with his reaction, she quickly knelt to scoop up the fork before he could get it. Her fingers lingering perhaps a bit too long on his when she handed it over. "Don't you like it?"

Leonard took the fork from her, his fingers brushing against hers as he did. He couldn't ignore the spark that went between them, and he pulled his hand back after a moment too long.

"Yeah," he said. "I do."

It was exactly the answer she had been hoping for, though in no way the one she was expecting, given his reaction. Straightening a little, reluctant to leave his table, she kept her voice low.

"It's here, you know." Earnest, when compared with her sultry tone just a few moments before. "Whenever you want"

"Yeah?" He looked up at her, meeting her eyes straight on, unable to keep from thinking how unlike his wife's they were. "Whenever I want?"
