No Knight
![]() Long ago, in a distant land... That's how a fairy tale would start, followed by velvet words and beautiful images on parchment, telling of the adventures of heroes. But you? You don't get a fairy tale - you certainly don't get the prerequisite knight in shining armor, whether you wanted one or not. It's the right time, yet the wrong place and the wrong person, for sure. Maybe you're being protected, somehow; on the other hand, you could be getting kidnapped. At any rate, your companion is a rough-edged warrior, a commoner, a ruffian rogue, or even worse, a savage. Will you even survive this story unscathed? Because you certainly won't get a picture-book ending or, far be it, true love...right?

AU? Before the end of Matanzas, after Kate returns from hell
One that Seth hoped had come to an end with the fall of the Twister but was wrong on epic levels.
The only positive note were the allies that also exited from the open doorway. Not only had Sex Machine and Zolo made their escape but so had other fallen culebras. Yet that also extended to plenty of enemies too. The good guys were starting to get outnumbered by the bad when Richie started hearing someone calling him again.
"No. Absolutely not! We did our part and almost didn't make it out. This isn't our fight!" Seth argued into the phone. His brother was on the way south with Scott to meet up with Sex Machine and the others. The two didn't need time to heal the way that Seth and Kate did. The duo planned on becoming a trio with a call to the Peacekeeper along the way. "Let him sit this one out. He just got his family back."
Seth tiredly looked around his room. His hair was still wet from a shower and spiked up messily. He sat in the chair at his desk in a tank top and pajama pants, keeping an ear out for Kate to get out of the shower. The water had cut off for a few minutes and he wondered if she'd been listening to the phone conversation.
"Let me know where you end up stoppin' at." With that, he ended the call and tossed the phone on the desk surface with eyes warily staring at the bathroom door's direction.
Sounds good!
She distantly heard the phone rang and somehow knew that it was Richie calling for Seth. Her fingers turned the water off, listening to the aggravation in Seth's voice rise as she wrapped herself in a towel. They fought a lot however this time Kate thought she heard something else in Seth's tone.
Kate twists her hair before pulling it over her shoulder to drip on the towel. She took a minute to study herself in the mirror before getting dressed and exiting the bathroom.
"What is it?" She glanced from the phone to Seth, drying her hair with the towel as she waited for his answer. She was sore, stiff and had a few cuts that needed a good nights sleep to heal.

Seth always felt stupid around her, be it his actual level of intelligence or the box he had a tendency of putting her in. Ignorance didn't downplay his responsibility in wreaking havoc in her life. He felt stupid because of feelings that developed as much as he tried to fight them. She wasn't a little girl but a young woman. Kate should know all of his thoughts about her thanks to Amaru.
"I remember everything."
He closed his eyes, remembering the exact moment she had said that statement. They didn't stay closed but for a second as he tried to work through the thought. "Are you hungry? I can make a sandwich. Might be some leftover pizza in there?"

They'd have to eventually meet up with Richie and the others but for now they were going to rest, that had been the plan. "So we wait." She spoke for his benefit more than her own, turning back to the bathroom to hang up her towel.
Pizza or sandwich. It felt like such a juvenile decision.
"There's two slices of pizza left." She remembered stashing them in the small fridge. "You hungry too?" Kate always thought about Seth before herself. If he'd eat the pizza then she'd give it to him and eat something else. She was fairly sure that there was slices of beef in the fridge.

She would never guess what he was thinking with the almost sour expression on his face. "I ate." He lied. They both needed to eat and rest with the blood loss and transfer between them. Seth wasn't concerned with himself. Only Kate mattered. "What'll it be, Princess? There's a truck stop not too far. Diner inside. If you want more than what we've got."
Questions burned inside of him. Was she okay? As okay as anyone could be returning from the dead and being possessed the queen of hell. Kate wasn't just anyone. She was a preacher's daughter. Innocent. Pure. Righteous. The only reason she was there with him was because he'd inserted himself into the Fuller family. If he were honest, Seth's question first and foremost was how did she really feel about him? Did she really not forgive him?
He stood with hands on his hips and kept eyes intently on her.

Her gaze turned back towards Seth, her eyebrows arcing at his reply. "What did you eat?" He could have eaten when she was in the shower but she found it hard to believe. If he had eaten the most likely some of the food they had would be gone or he was lying.
She walked over to him, her eyes searching his momentarily as she studied his face. "You look pale. You should eat more." Kate wanted him to be okay, to stay healthy. She didn't know what she'd do if she didn't have Seth or the others with her. As strong as she was, no one ever wanted to be alone.
There was only one moment in her life where Kate had blamed Seth and Richie for everything that had happened to her and her family. That had been the few seconds before she died, when all she could feel was searing pain through her body and the cold night air on her face. She hadn't ever told Seth the specifics or what she had said to Richie and Scott with her last breath.
"Let's eat what we got here and rest. It's been a long day." And it'll most likely be an even longer night.

"I'm fine." Another lie. Hopefully it meant something that he meant well with his untruths. She had been through enough, Kate didn't need to worry over him. Pot meet kettle. "They say ginger ale helps with blood loss. I think we've got some. Courtesy of Burt."
The name left him before Seth realized that Kate didn't need another reminder of anyone lost in the crusade to get her back though technically it was more widely known as the mission to send Amaru back to hell. He stopped thinking so much about everything he said or did and moved past the preacher's daughter to the kitchen.
It was easier not to put his foot in his mouth when he wasn't staring at her. "I can make a mean PB and J," he called out while working in the kitchen. Leftover pizza was put in the microwave before getting sliced bread out. She needed her rest so it was easy to agree on staying in. Seth pulled a small bottle of ginger ale from the fridge then a beer, twisting off the cap and drinking from the latter.
"What'll it be, Princess?" he asked between the pizza and sandwiches.

Her eyes fell and she only replied when she knew that there would be strength in her voice. "Ginger ale sounds good." It was easy and she'd freely admit that she felt a little light headed though she didn't think it was only the blood loss.
Kate took a seat on the bed, trying her best to stay out of Seth's way. She watched as he moved though he was obscured by the counter. "I'd like that. You can have the pizza." She wanted him to eat, despite his assurances that he'd already eaten.
"I'm not really in the mood for pizza anyway." Which she only said because he already started to microwave them.

Even with the bedroom door open, he didn't think she had a clear line of sight to where he was in the kitchen and continued to talk loudly. "How many do you want? One? Two? ...I'll make three and you can put whatever you don't want in the fridge for later." It wasn't but two minutes before he returned to the room with food.
There was a small mess left in the kitchen but not worth delaying over. One plate held his pizza, another her sandwiches and his left hand their drinks. Seth set the food down on the bed near Kate then took her ginger ale in the freed hand and handed it to her. He sipped more beer with eyes watching her than eating.

She remembered beginning him to kill her. She'd felt like she was suffocating then. She had watched every death and all the pain that was inflicted by her hand. It put a lot of things in perspective and it made her think back to when she'd been shot. What had she told Richie then? There was no more love left. She hadn't known true darkness then.
Amaru had shown her true darkness and it made Kate want to fight for that love even more.
She snapped from her thoughts when Seth walked back into the room. She had been staring at him but she hadn't caught his question. "Oh. Yeah, three is fine." She flashed him a smile though it didn't quite reach her eyes. Kate didn't even begin to think about the mess in the kitchen but she'd clean it up in the morning if she didn't get to it tonight.
Kate took a small sip of her ginger ale before holding the can in her lap. "Are you going to eat?" She asked as she reached for one of the sandwiches. She wanted to make sure he was eating and she knew that one bite would make his stomach crave more.
