[ Peter left Beacon Hills in the dust behind him.

Six hours. That was the distance between him and the godforsaken town he used to call home. He drove the entire route without stopping until he hit Westwood, where there was an apartment waiting for him, and a chance to start anew.

Los Angeles had its packs, but territory was smaller here. Compacted into city blocks and towns, and luckily for Peter, he was still on good enough terms with the local alpha (an old college friend) to settle here. He hadn't been back since the occasional trip after he graduated from UCLA, and not since everything went to shit in Beacon Hills.

Six months after leaving, Peter was doing fine. More than fine. He went to plays. Concerts. He visited the Getty Villa one weekend, and the museum the next. He caught up with people he hadn't seen in years. He drove out to Venice Beach every so often to kick his feet through the sand and surf. Here, in the city limits, there wasn't a constant barrage of supernatural threats. It was peaceful.

He should have left Beacon Hills the instant he dragged himself out from underneath the floorboards of the Hale house. The town did something to him— made the wires in his head cross, mired as it was in blood and memories.

There was annual get together of sorts, for pack and pack adjacent up and down the coast. It was a good way to find allies, and neutral ground. In retrospect, Peter should have realised when he agreed to go as plus one to his current pack's second that there was a chance Scott McCall, who was showing a previously unseen initiative to network, would be there, along with a handful of familiar faces. Stiles Stilinski, who was tugging at his tie like it was a live snake, the kitsune, and—

Of course. Chris. The last person he wanted to see.

Peter snagged a flute of champagne from a passing waiter, tossing it back. Well, it was a big event. People everywhere. Without a werewolf's senses, Chris would have a hard time picking him out in the masses. And a harder one on the crowded dance floor. Let's dance, he told his company (a perfectly pleasant werewolf, answered to James), and pulled him out into the heart of the floor.
