The Unpopular RP Opinion Meme

THE UNPOPULAR [RP] OPINION MEME

You ever feel like you're the only one? Maybe you're not. You can always commiserate with someone else!

≈ Comment logged in or anon.
≈ Spill your unpopular opinion or confession, as long as it's rp-related. That means stuff about canons, plots, etc.
≈ Rant, vent, and all that good stuff.
≈ Be cool. Being a dick for no good reason is not the point.

I DO NOT ship Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff. At all. Random smut, yes. Relationship, no.

I would like to add that I hate it when people lovingly describe MY characters dick.

It's like okay can your character stop being amazed by the impressive length and girth of my character's dick (according to YOU not me) and just put it in their mouth already? It's actually pretty much averaged sized. You probably won't have any difficulty fitting it in there.

I don't even RP smut at all. In fact, most of my muses are kids or animals. But I still cringe every time I see yet another strong, manly-man character turned into a whiny butt pirate.

At least let them be strong, manly-man butt pirates. Or flamboyant drag queens, even. Just cut it out with the cookie cutter "YAOI TIMEZ" character adaptations.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I like smut but I get bored of it. Especially if people skip to mid-sex or speed through the foreplay. I like to be teased, I like the build up. And the more smut I do, the less I want to play it.

I'm not interested in playing out sex. I find most of the anatomical euphemisms ridiculous at best, and think that lovingly detailed descriptions of bodily fluids are gross. But at the same time I don't dare say anything about it, because everyone else seems to like it and I'm afraid I'll be made fun of for being uninterested.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of the terminology just...isn't sexy to me so I just kinda gloss over it. You might want to try being more vague on the physical descriptions and emphasize the emotional aspect?

- I hate most kid characters and generic derpy shounen protagonists, I'll tag them if they tag me but I generally won't seek them out
- I like threading noncon and bestiality and am not ashamed of either
- keysmashing is not cute in any situation ever and especially not in actual tags, stop it
- I automatically side-eye any player who's considered the "best" X, because in my experience, they're usually not (or it's very much debatable)
- I hate 80% of LA characters, I find it a pretty boring medium overall, though I do like certain ones
- also hate 80% of anime/manga characters too despite playing mainly from it because it's filled with flavor of the month stuff or just terrible series in general (i.e. Naruto)
- Homestuck sucks, and no, it doesn't get better after Act 3
- I'm not hyperneurotic about staying IC in memes/casual settings because I just care about having fun
- nearly everyone on Plurk I've met is insufferable and I regret ever making one

probably can think of more but those are the ones off the top of my head.

-Character development is your friend! Don't be afraid to develop your characters!

-Wanting to end/speed up a love scene and get to the pillow talk afterward with a fade-to-black/cut to "curtains blowing in the breeze" is *NOT* a sign of prudery. Some people need to be in the right mood for smut and I am one of them.

-Age of consent laws are different in non-US countries. I play a Japanese guy who's attracted to seventeen year old guys: this does not make him a pedophile (for that matter, pedophiles are drawn to children who haven't reached puberty, so even then, this guy would be an ephebophile; there is a difference). Also, AoC is dependent on time-periods and settings, so a male character from a society inspired by medieval Europe where "old enough to bleed, old enough to breed" was the order of the day, is likely to try and court the attentions of a post-pubertal fifteen year old girl.

-A person can play both literary and anime characters. The two are not mutually exclusive, and since when is it wrong for a person to be fans of both media??

-I play straight cismale characters as well as gay/bi/pan/transmale characters. This does not mean I hate slash games, it just means Character X reads as straight to me, and thus I will not be applying him to a slash game. Also, playing X as straight is not homo-intolerance, it means I play X as being straight because he reads straight to me. Can the straight and cis intolerance please stop? I come to RP for pretendy-fun times, not to have my face rubbed in social justice issues (yes, I know these issues need to be addressed, RP is just not the best place to address these issues, particularly if one is going to be shrill and uncivil about it).

-Human gender, which is already a bendy thing anyway, does not necessarily apply to humanoid but non-human characters, ie. shinigami, other god-like beings, shapeshifters who can take on any form.

-Mpreg plots are not inherently misogynistic. For me, they're a kink/guilty pleasure as well as an interesting concept to explore in a character. And in some sci-fi canons, the notion is, well, canon (Jack Harkness via that throw-away line in the pilot ep of Torchwood, anyone?)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You're awesome for mentioning Jack Harness's throw away comment as proof. I always think of that when I think of mpreg and how it's not always non-canon. It's also fictional fun times so really... just mentioning Captain Jack makes you awesome. He's one of my all-time favorite characters ever and my favorite who falls into the sci-fi category.

- Not all bad guys or villains are automatically going to rape your character. It's okay to ask IF YOU ASK and follow what the player says, but stop just assuming "villain = rape" and the player has no problem with it. I can't imagine rape being a trigger to me and have that happen (real trigger, not just uncomfortable since I am uncomfortable with it happening without asking). Please, show respect. Just because a player plays a villain does not mean they are okay with their character raping yours especially without you ASKING PERMISSION. (And anyway, not all villains qualify as rapists in some people's mind. Just because they want to blow up the world or take over the world or kill that stupid superhero who keeps thwarting their plans of world domination does not mean they would rape anyone.)

- I don't have a big deal about smut or writing smut. I take it or leave it and move on either way. I don't care. But sometimes I want to see some strictly non-smut memes with no option of smut. I see memes that seem to be that and then I read the options and sex/smut is always there. ALWAYS. I get we want to play pretendy funtimes and you can play whatever you want, but I'd love some variety once in awhile. (And in the same notion, why would smut/sex NOT be an option just because it's not one of the choices. Players can do whatever they damn well please. Just because someone doesn't list it, wouldn't immediately mean it's not allowed. I just hate the damned spotlight it gets in like every damned meme.)

- I would rather write something strictly on dialogue and/or emotion than physical actions. Just a dialogue-only meme or something that firmly focuses on the emotion and mental aspect of something. Physicality is great, but sometimes, I'd love to explore other parts of a situation with a character. Even if it's just for "something new".

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
But at the same time, if your character's defining canon trait is being a rapist, don't flip out when I tag in expecting some rape fantasy.

Yes, I'm sure your woobie man is just a tortured soul who is in desperate need of a good strong hug, but don't play a sexual predator and then wonder why people expect you to thread sexual situations.

(In this instance the "you" is intended as a general "you." It's just something I've encountered a few times here.)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really get all the hate people seem to throw at popular characters who have a lot of doubles/alternate versions running around. I mean, I know it's a little confusing when there are 50 of the same character all over the place, all played by different people, but I don't immediately hate the player or character. A lot of people seem to go "God, another Homestuck/Avengers/Teen Wolf character?!" and just have a bad attitude about the situation in general.

I understand that variety is important, and seeing the same character over and over again can be a bit tedious, but is it really necessary to scream "Goddammit, not another Loki" whenever a new player decides to pick up the muse? I don't really think it's fair to discourage people from playing a muse they really like, just because a lot of other people are playing them too.

- I hate feeling confined with my writing style, because it feels like most people want you to get straight to the point. Sometimes the fun of posts is the actual sound when you read it out in your head, so I like bouncing and moving language, flowing images, et cetera. "He [X], and then he [x]. His [x]," gets tedious. I'd love it if people showed a little more craft and felt proud of it, especially if that's what comes naturally to your style.

- I cannot stand incest ships, at least when they're treated as, "Okay, there's nothing dark and wrong with this; we're just as romantic and fluffy as anyone else's relationship." Uh, no.

+1

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Especially with the incest ships. When I see those I'm just like, have you even read a article on Wikipedia on Incest? A good eighty percent of people who do that are fucked up. Not that it's a bad thing in RP, but don't go and pretend like it's perfectly normal, sane thing.
