The Last Words Meme

This is it. The final curtain. You're at the end of your life, and there's someone here you really, really need to say something to before you die.

(TRIGGER WARNING. This meme deals heavy with death and also possibly with strong violence or with suicide/depression. If you are not comfortable reading about that, please PLEASE do not proceed further.)





CAUSE OF DEATH
1 - Accidental. Nobody meant for this to happen, but it doesn't matter now. Due to negligance, arrogance or just plain bad luck, you've become gravely ill or injured and are now in your last moments. This covers all kinds of accidental deaths--strangulation, drowning, car accidents, unintentional beheadings, whatever you can think of.

2 - Murder. Somebody really didn't like you. Enough to kill you, it seems. You're now dead by someone else's hand. (Maybe even the person replying to you?) As with accidental death, this covers all types of intentional, malicious murder, regardless of method--so poisoning, stabbing, shooting, etc., all work here. Same with all the below options: any possible variation you can think of on it will work!

3 - Suicide. There is no hope for you, and no way out. You've reached the absolute bottom pits of despair, and the only recourse you have is to take your own life. Someone shows up to stop you... but they're too late to help you now.

4 - Terminal illness. You have cancer, or tuberculosis, or cholera back when people got cholera. The doctors have done everything they could and it wasn't enough. The only thing to do now is give your loved ones the bad news.

5 - Starvation. So thirsty. So hungry. Maybe you've been traveling in the desert for hours, or maybe you're just really poor. Whatever the reason, it doesn't matter, because you're slowly wasting away until you're nothing but skin and bones.

6 - Death in battle. You've died a hero's death, and gone out in a blaze of glory. Or maybe you were a coward who got shot for deserting? Either way, you're now a casualty of war. Will you be honored with a parade or scorned as a traitor to your country?

7 - Natural causes. You've lived a long, happy life, and now your story is at an end. In a warm bed, surrounded by your family and friends, you peacefully drift off. Just make sure that you've made a will somewhere, or at least use your deathbed to set the record straight. Otherwise, who knows what kind of squabbles might errupt after you leave this world?


TIME LEFT
1 - A few minutes. You're fading fast and you don't have much, well, any time left. Better tell the person with you that you love -- or despise -- them with your last breath, because you'll never have the chance otherwise.

2 - A few hours. You haven't got much time left. Is there someone you still need to kill? To kiss? Better do it quick. (Note: last kisses not recommended for people dying of highly contagious illnesses.)

3 - A few days. The doctors have given you the news, and it's not very good. You've only got a couple days left to live. You should start trying to make peace with people and saying your final goodbyes with the days you have left.

4 - A few weeks. Take that vacation you've always wanted to go on but never had the chance to. Go do that thing you've never thought you'd be any good at. You've got only weeks left to live. Don't waste them.

5 - A few months. While you aren't quite on death's doorstep yet, your lifespan has still dwindled considerably from what you probably thought it would be. How are you going to spend your last few months on Earth? Making the world a better place and telling your family you love them? Or raising as much hell as possible?


RELATIONSHIP
1 - Lovers. This is your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, mistress, whatever you call them they were the person you wanted to spend your life with. Too bad you don't have much of a life to spend with them anymore.

2 - Siblings. Your beloved little or older sibling is just standing there, watching you slowly waste away before their eyes. Can you say anything to comfort them? Note that it doesn't necessarily have to be interpreted literally; adopted siblings and friends so close they might as well be siblings work too.

3 - Parent and child. Nothing is worse than a parent having to bury their child... except, maybe, a young child now alone in the world after losing their parent. As with the sibling prompt, this can be expanded to include parental figures and people who are LIKE a father/mother to you as well as actual biological parents.

4 - Co-workers, teammates or classmates. You were fighting for the same side. Or you worked together in the same office for years. Or they sat behind you in biology all semester. However you met, how do your react when you find out someone who used to be a fixture in your life is going to die?

5 - Friends. You're the best of friends! You go everywhere together, know all each other's secrets, and are never seen apart. At least, you didn't use to be. Now one of you is dying and the other one is left alone in the world. Or maybe you're dying together. Wait, is that better or worse?

6 - Bitter enemies. You hate, hate, HATE this person. In fact, maybe you killed them. Or they killed you. Or maybe nobody killed anybody and they're just bitter that Mother Nature got to you before they did. Regardless, they want to confront you one last time before you bite it, if only to rub your nose in your imminent demise and their ability to outlive you.


HOW IT WORKS:
1. Using Random.org or a similar site, the first character to post rolls for their cause of death and how long they have left to live. They then post to the meme with their name, canon and the results of their roll. (For example: "Jane Doe | That One Series | 1 2" would mean Jane Doe from That One Series died of accidental causes and has a few hours left to live.)

2. Responding characters then roll for the relationship between the two of you. Optionally responding characters can also share your cause of death/time left to live or roll for their own, but that's not required. A living character caring for (or horribly mutilating) a dying one is fine, too.

3. Tell the person what you need to tell them before you bite it.

4. Have fun!

[Toni never was quite as tough as some of the other members of the team. The only reason she was able to fight along side with them was because she had one hell of a suit of armor, but it could still be beaten. With each near death fight she found ways of improving the systems, strengthening the metals that she used when building it as well as improving her own fighting skills.

Still, even she could be beaten. There was only a certain amount of time she could spend in the suit without having to change out cores on her arc reactor. With the new core she could fight longer and harder, but she still had to be careful.

She had underestimated the last fight. Sure, she had survived, but the glow from her arc reactor was a lot dimmer than it usually was and she was looking rather pale. She tried to shake it off as JARVIS began to take off her armor, but there was obviously something wrong.]

but nothing has gone as planned this entire op, and this is no exception. she feels the hand on her ankle just as she moves, the weight of the man attached to it dragging her down. Natasha stumbles, turning and shooting and wasting precious seconds, and by the time his lifeless hand lets go she's out of time

there's a bang, the hiss of bullet through air, and she tries, she tries so hard to get there, but every second counts and hers were wasted. her next shot isn't, and the gunman falls, but by then she doesn't even care, hands pressed to his wound, all ready stained red]

[He's had a fun run, but the odds are sometimes too strong to beat. Pym is bleeding out rather quickly, stabbed in the stomach by his grandson, Victor Mancha. There's pain, definitely. Also, regret. But oddly enough, the strongest feeling Hank has as he bleeds out on the sterile floor of the Academy's rec room is peace.

Ultron may have finally won out against him, but Victor, Jocasta, and Vision were probably free now. The source of their base programming is about to be no more, and for that above anything else, he can be glad.

There's a pained smile on his face when Clint finds him slumped against one of the couches. He really doesn't seem to mind this at all, though, and when he notices Clint, he gives him a nod.]

the words rang around the room like a bell that would not cease it's hum even after elixer and the other medics retreated. raven's—no, mystique's tears from earlier had subsided, staining the blue of her skin to a dark shade of navy and making her eyes puff around the corners. it wasn't until emma laid a comforting hand on his shoulder that he snapped away from his reverie. they exchanged a look, a telepathic brush of minds meant to offer sympathy, before emma walks to mystique and ushers her out of the room with gentle encouragement. for someone so frigid she never ceases to amaze charles in how exception she is with handling the children and, when necessary, these delicate situations where nurture is more effective than sternness.

but there's a more pressing issue at hand. he moves to the seat next to erik's bed, trying his hardest not to let his gaze fall to the gauze and bandages wrapped around his chest and instead at his eyes. they're cold and hard like shards of ice, less full of the fiery focus they had in the battle before...

how ironic that the same metal he manipulates should be the thing to kill him slowly, tricking through his blood stream. they can't extract it without killing him, they can't leave it in him without killing him. all he can do is struggle to keep it in place and receive healing of the existing damage when it occurs. but how long before the will slips and the iron he once used to decimate his foes tears his own heart to pieces? he can't let these thoughts overwhelm him when the only slice of a true family he's ever known needs him most. ]

We'll get through this. We've made it this far, we will find a way to cure this. And Magneto will return to his station as though he'd never left.

[ Here's what they don't tell you about the Red Room: it's not a place, it's a process. And there is always more than one.

Natasha doesn't see it coming. It doesn't come plainer than that. The wire slips underneath her throat and she throws her weight, fights, bares her teeth and scrapes at the garrote until her fingers bleed. It works; for a little while, but there is nothing that stops the blade that slips between her ribs. It's an easy, smooth, clean movement, but Natasha isn't one of the handful (if the only fucking one) to escape by being anything less than ruthless.

At the end of it, she comes out the victor. Natasha's room at Stark Tower is a mess, items strewn about that read there's been blood spilt here: a body, facedown on the mattress, a pool of crimson around it and staining her sheets. A trail of blood — both hers and her assailants — leads to the ensuite. It's a tailor-made crimescene in there, red smeared over the tile floor and Natasha sitting with her back against the side of her bathtub, her hands clasped over the wound in her side.

She's losing too much blood too fast and Natasha — the Black Widow — thinks that she's never felt so tired.

[Clint sucked in a sharp breath, a fit of coughing wracking his body when it caught, making his fingers flex where they were pressed up against his side. His other arm had already gone numb, he certainly couldn't lift it any more, blood soaking into the makeshift bandages he'd wrapped around it. He'd care more about the fact that it was made from a dust sheet, but he doubted he'd last long enough for any kind of infection that could set in to matter. The wound to the side of his stomach was trickling blood slowly over his fingers, deeper than the one on his arm, and far more painful. Maybe it would've been different, if his earpiece hadn't been damaged when the killbots got the drop on his position. He'd managed to take out most of them, but all it had taken was one hit, and there'd been so many. At least twenty. He'd kept firing through the agony, until they'd fallen, before slumping down against the wall.

He hadn't moved since.

He'd kept his bow trained on the door to start, just in case there were more. But as time wore on, and fuck knew how long it'd been, he'd been unable to keep holding it up, and now it lay discarded by his side. He laughed a little, rough and low. He'd finally found a family in the Avengers, and he was going to die alone, in some abandoned building, covered in his own blood. Wasn't that just something.]
