There's nothing in this world quite like a true, blue best friend that you can rely on. They've been with you through thick and thin, good and bad. You want to have fun? They're the first person you look for, because they always know how to bring the best out in you. You need a shoulder to cry on? Don't worry, they're already here. You need to bury a body? ...you should probably reconsider your priorities, but you know your best friend will be there with a shovel and a smile. You'd never ruin this friendship for ANYTHING in the world. Something's brewing that may do just that, though. One of you has feelings, has for a long time, and that spells trouble. Unless you keep that to yourself and remain platonic, of course. Repression in this case might be a good thing. Only it's too late. The cat's out of the bag, whether it's by confession or by accident. What to do, what to do? If feelings aren't returned, can you turn down a friend, or will you force something that isn't there just to make them happy? If feelings are returned, will you risk changing the perfect thing you have? Comment with your character, canon, preferences, and which side you may want to play. IE, the one with feelings, etc. Also, mention if you'd like things to be more fluffy or more tragic. Respond to others. Assumed CR and AU it up if need be.

Caleb Brewster was no stranger to sin. He'd lied, cheated, stolen, and even murdered, all without losing much sleep at all over it. The difference was that those actions were (with a few exceptions) committed for the greater good, for freedom and love for his people and home.

What was the good in this sinful business?

His feelings for Benjamin Tallmadge had always been so terribly fond that he wasn't sure he could pinpoint where exactly they had begun to change into... Whatever they were now. All the normal signs were blurred by their circumstances: They were best friends, so of course he wanted to be around him all the time. He was assigned to special detail at Ben's side, so of course he wanted to protect him. Ben was so stressed all the time, so of course he was delighted to see a smile on his handsome face.

It wasn't until a tavern girl boldly flirted with the Major and Caleb found himself fighting back a wave of jealousy (while simultaneously admiring the way the way it made him blush so prettily) that the truth struck him horribly in the gut.

Caleb Brewster was no stranger to sin, but as he sat across the table and a draughts board from his dearest and oldest friend, he wondered if he would ever be willing to drag such a man into it with him.

"For a military man, you're shit at strategy," he said, capturing yet another of Ben's pieces.

Ever the officer and gentleman, Ben had politely turned away the girl's advances. His mind was already elsewhere and certainly not on the massacre being incurred on the pieces scattered before him. Beyond the troubling thoughts of being a cavalryman and Washington's intelligence officer, a moral dilemma far older than the conflict with the British plucked and pulled at his thoughts like stinging nettles--or worse yet, proper thorns.

Ben's attention turned back to his friend and he surveyed first the board and then the perpetrator of Ben's losses.

"For a whaler, you're awfully good at it," he replied. The signs of a smile lit up his features despite Caleb's jab. His best friend's wits were far greater than most people cared to notice, which was itself unfortunate, but Caleb's intelligence was something Ben had always admired. There was a lot to admire about him, and admire Ben did. The man was at home in his heart and he had rarely doubted the purity of such feelings.

He studied the board and made his next move.

Lately, the discomfort he'd felt at thoughts of finding a suitable woman for marriage plagued him. That discomfort was strongest when he was with his dear friend, and it was the kind of pain a man might feel when being parted from a lover. This rattled him to his core even more than the first life he took on the battlefield.
