recognised as a social contract. Unions were entered into for many
reasons: to obtain property, to unite families, to carry on a bloodline,
et cetera. Whatever the reason, congratulations, you're getting married!

POSSIBLE REASONS FOR MARRIAGE:
① Station → You come from a royal, noble, or otherwise distinguished family who has chosen a suitable spouse for you.
② Feud → You are being married to put an end to the bitter enmity between your two families.
③ Economics → Your economic state and/or your station will improve through the union, though one of you may be marrying down.
④ Empire → You and your spouse are merging your businesses and/or property to create something more influential or profitable.
⑤ Tribute → You have been offered as a gift or appeasement, alternately you're the spoils of war.
⑥ Bloodline → Carrying on your distinguished family name has fallen to you and the equally well-bred spouse of your family's selection.
⑦ Disapproval → Your marriage has been arranged to keep you away from the person with whom you truly wish to be.

① First meeting → This is the very first time you're meeting your future spouse.
② Courtship → To get to know each other and encourage affection, your family has approved of you going on dates.

[When she'd first been introduced to the idea of marriage it had been presented as yet another mission for the Red Room. Albeit, one that Natasha had not expected, didn't quite know what to do with. The Madam had informed her that there was an arrangement and that she would be being married to a man from another organization. She was told what an honor it would be, the good that could come from the union, and Natasha had smiled and acquiesced obediently. She was smart enough to know that refusing the commands of her handlers was not advisable.

And yet it had just been something that hovered over her head, things mentioned once or twice and yet the specter of it had seemed far off. At least, until today, when she'd been informed they would be meeting. She was dressed up; black dress, stockings, heels and lipstick, red hair pulled up so tendrils trailed against the side of her neck. They were to be allowed to get to know each other unsupervised and then there would be a task; some way to judge their performance together.

Natasha does her best to hide how much she likes the offer of unsupervised. Growing up in the Red Room, there wasn't much time the girls were allowed to themselves. Showers, once they'd been handcuffed to the bedframes at night.

She hadn't known what to expect, but they take her into the city, and they have her wait in the office of a senior member of the KGB that as far as she can tell seems to have had some hand in arranging this. There's tea and coffee on the table and some sweets. She's nervous, though she doesn't show it. There's something about the idea of marriage -- someone like her. Who would they possibly pick for her? What was he like? A handler by a different name?

She hoped not, though she would never say as much out loud. Maybe wanting someone that was more than just another commanding officer was hoping for too much, but Natasha had always had more hopes than she admitted to. The door opens and she stands, her smile inviting but not too warm, at least at first.]

[It had taken a lot to wrestle her into the dress. Not that Chocola had anything against dresses or looking pretty, but she had a thing about impractical dresses and this one did not give her the mobility she liked. A good thing according to her father as she then would have a harder time to run off and do gods knew what. Her mother ensured her that she only needed to keep the dress on for this very first meeting with her future husband. It should show that she were a princess after all.

But even with all the effort put down to keep her inside of the castle, she found her way outside to wait for Xander. If she would have to marry him then she would like to get to know him on her own terms. No parents, servants or nobility around to remind her of that she needed to act like a proper princess. If he did not like her for her then this whole thing could just be called off.]

It's odd, this tightening up he feels riding back into Gilead. He hadn't expected to be nervous. Alain and Bert have fallen back a little ways behind him - his closest friends had, of course, been the ones to ride out with him, biding time while Roland's prospective spouse arrived, recovered from their long journey, settled in. Everyone'd called it a normal patrol when Roland had ridden out and, for the most part, it had been. But the nights had been odd, especially when they'd been too far between towns to sleep indoors. Roland'd lain there looking up at the stars, thinking of how his own mother and father met, how they used to be with one another, how they are now. Sometimes he'd lain there and thought of long, golden hair, in the seconds before he could stop himself. Dreaming hadn't been easy, those nights, but that's not rare.

Well, nevermind. Everyone who matters knows enough about Roland's history not to expect him to fall back into love's starry-eyed daze any time soon, and once the possibility of true love is long over and done with, the business of marriage becomes considerably simpler.

Which is why there is no reason to be nervous. Roland believes the thought about as much as his friends do; he can tell by their silence. Bert was teasing him, a while back. But once the walls of that great city came into view his jokes had slowed. They'd ridden past lower town, up through the old quarter, and by the time the shadow of the castles themselves settled over the three of them Cuthbert's mouth hadn't been moving at all. A rare thing, but Roland can not bring himself to enjoy it.

He can guess where whoever it is - someone royal, he assumes, to make the kind of alliance that's worth all this trouble - would have been put once they arrived here. There's a certain wing of rooms in a certain castle facing the main road. It houses the visiting nobles, diplomats. Some of Gilead's idle rich keep their rooms there because of the bright, detailed tapestries, deep fireplaces, housings made to impress. Most of them even have glass over the windows.

On the way to the stables he passes that particular wing, can't help but look up, scan all those windows he can see there. His eyes are good, as a gunslinger's should be - he'll see anyone looking back. Several people do. He doesn't have the first clue who any of them are.

He waves his friends away, is as honest as he can be to their questions and concerns, and as he walks their three horses back into their pasture he busies his mind with being grateful for them, grateful he hadn't needed to explain anything at all. Not to them.

The horses need rubbing down and washing. He murmurs a few words to the groom and then sets to work on them. He means to get to one after the other himself, all three. It'll be long work, and it'll keep his hands busy. It'll keep him away from anyone who might have seen him arrive, and so might be expecting him.

Nevermind. This needs to be done, that's all.
