Your heart belongs to a stray

S T R A Y

Taking in strays is, all in all, an understandable vice. The dips in between their ribs, those large and forlorn eyes, they can help you forget the claws and the teeth and the danger lurking beneath fur. But the habit's a knife edge; your efforts may not be rewarded with kindness (animal instincts aren't discretionary) and you may get bit despite what you've overlooked. A stray doesn't care about pity. All it can know is survival.

These warnings apply to strays of the more human(oid) sort, too.

But what may even more perilous with this type than any drawn blood is what you can get when they grow to trust you. You can earn their undying loyalty...or their love. Either from such a wild thing is a precarious path to go down, if you allow yourself to do it.

[Jason grins, making sure she doesn't see it because oh yeah, he was hoping that as going to be her reaction.]

Uh huh. hat happened to great hero Robin? Now I'm only your assistant? [He doesn't sound offended at all, though. If anything he slows down so she can go first.]

I don't really care what you--

[She cut herself off as they crossed the room and she took a better look at the far wall. There were several framed portraits hung up, and aside from style and difference in images, they all appeared the same. She bit her lower lip and appeared to think for a moment, silently mouthing a few indecipherable words before nodding to herself and indicating to the one on the left.]

Behind that one. There's a special way to unlatch the painting, and the safe should be in the wall behind it.

[Jason lets her think in silence, hands on his back as he waits. He's positive he could have solved it himself, but to be fair he's always positive he can do nearly anything.

He's grinning when she speaks again.]

Okay, and how do we do that?

[He probably could have; the painting in the middle was slightly off center, and the one on the right was set in a frame far too new to be part of an established compartment in a room as old as this one. Anyone who took the time to really look and see could have figured it out.]

I need something to stand on. The switch is on top, and it swings downward, instead of opening like a door.

[Jason points at himself.] If you promise not to step on me too hard with your heels, you could stand on me.

If you're positive you'll be able to get to it.

[She briefly glanced down at her sneakers, then back up at him with a humorless expression.]

I'm not wearing heels.

[...very literal, this one. Although the emphasis on her rubber soles served two purposes. One, it showed she was smart enough to wear appropriate footwear to something like this. And two, it would provide her a better grip to step on his back, if he was serious about letting her use him for a boost.]

I can get it.
