They were on your front door, in your yard, or on the street, confused and clearly in no position to fend for themselves; in a worst case scenario, they were bruised and battered, possibly close to death. Bleeding heart or not, you can't just be so cruel as to let them suffer. They need a place to stay, and you'll open your home to them...long enough to get back on their feet, anyway.

Speaking of feet, the shoe could be on the other one. You're worse for the wear - in a new place, possibly injured, certainly not in the best state of mind. You could not even remember how you got here or who you are to get here, for that matter. You may not want to remember. Whether willing or not so willing, you're in no position to turn down help, especially if said helper won't take no for an answer. No matter how dedicated you are to looking after yourself, there's only so much you can do in your position.

The two of you are staying together, at any rate. Only for a while, the plan is. But after said while, even though strength and confidence is returning to the injured, there's something a little different between you two. It could be the close quarters, the kindness shown, or a number of things, but quietly, softly, feelings have grown. Could more confusion and hurt spring from this? What about when it's time to go? Can the temporary resident leave as easily as they intended? You're so close now, perhaps a little while longer can't do any harm...

...until whatever it was that put them in such a perilous position in the first place comes back, and there could be "justice" for anyone who's dared to help.

[He remembered that one night in the warehouse, the time he boldly took on a handful of thugs. In the end it turned out someone must have intentionally spilled kerosene to bring the facility to flames. It felt like the end for him: cornered in a molten corner with beams coming down. He accepted it. He long accepted death, simple as closing your eyes.

Yet when he awoke he found himself awaking on a bed a couple sizes smaller than himself, bandages crudely wrapped around him. The question of how they got him away with his size aside, what would prompt them to save a monster like him?

It was a human, of all creatures. A human he discovered to be meek yet intelligent and somewhat...fascinating as his 'recovery' continued. It turned out having flaming rubble fall on you takes a lot out of you.

But the human seemed patient. It began to bother him...such unwarranted kindness. As his strength returned he considered explanations would have to come out sooner or later.

Mid-day he sat up in his bed as he mused aloud to himself.]

[Arthur didn't know why he did it either. Monsters terrified him and this giant guy was certainly a monster. Still, seeing him in danger made Arthur act. Maybe it was the loneliness or the lack of sleep. It could be anything but he did it. He got the large mutant out of the burning warehouse and to his apartment. He'd been taking care of them and they hadn't talked much.

He was looking through his newly purchased supplies for the gauze when Leatherhead asked the question. He turned with an awkward smile.]

Huh? Maybe? I don't know. I'm not usually good with this kind of stuff. I mean, I'm okay at replacing limbs with robotic prosthetics but luckily you didn't need that.

[Arthur grabs the gauze and walks over to the mutant.] I should change your bandages again.

[Leatherhead slowly rose, bringing himself arms over knees as he watched the human explain himself with such an awkward charisma.]

Your talents lie with technical feats, that much one can ascertain from one look.

[Leatherhead ran his thumb over his fingers, the absent motion lost on him as he went into thought over the human's ability to compensate for natural weakness and his...well.]

I'm made of strong material.

[His grin is tinged with bitter irony.]

Perhaps too strong for my own good.

[Leatherhead is big. Really big. Arthur feels a bit intimidated as he reaches to start undoing the gauze from around the mutant's chest and right arm. He chuckles at the words.]

Maybe. I mean, you did survive a warehouse fire and me. [He smiles.]

I think you'll be good enough to go soon too. You're healing pretty well.

[He keeps still as Arthur undresses the bandages, keeping watch on the gentle human beside him.]

Survival is a habit of mine. What one can live through...it makes it a difficult habit.

[He leans back, his smile fading from his maw.]

A good thing I go sooner. You have gotten entangled enough in my life just by knowing of things like me.

[Arthur pulls the gauze off and grabs the healing ointment. He pours it onto his hands and rubs them together. He presses it into the wounds and rubs it in as gently as he can, even with a metal hand. He wipes off his hands with a cloth and grabs the gauze. He wraps it around the wounds and blinks up at the mutant.]

...What do you mean? I already knew about monsters and ghosts way before I met you.

[Ah...a terrible sense of regret for bringing himself into Arthur's life washes over him. The boy has done nothing but shown him kindness he found nowhere else in this world.]

...I may have to hear your anecdote about ghosts another time but.

Ghosts and monsters aside, could you say with certainty you would look at one's deeds and not call them...monstrous?

Their deeds? [He seems confused for a moment. He looks back at the gauze and his face falls.]

...I know what it's like to make monstrous mistakes. Things happen.

[He looks puzzled by Arthur's posturing, craning his neck one way.]

I'd rather not leave it to vague promises and obfuscation.

I'd rather just tell you what I did.

Okay. [Arthur nods and keeps working. He isn't sure where this is going but it can't be that bad, right? Arthur is sure it can't be bad. He's starting to like the mutant. He might even want to be friends.]

Leatherhead sees honestly as a bitter pill he'll have to swallow. The human will find out sooner or later if he doesn't.]

I've been captured and imprisoned by an alien warlord for centuries.

When I escaped, I retaliated against his kind rather... messily. In blood.

[Well that makes Arthur stop dead in his tracks. Slowly he looks up at the mutant.]

...U-Um... [Is there a right answer here?]

C-Centuries? Wait. How old are you? W-What are you if you're hundreds of years old? You were captured so you escaped and killed a bunch of people? Is that what you're telling me?!

[There is too much to process in those few sentences.]

Yes. That's what I'm telling you.

[His eyes flicker away from Arthur.]

I am far beyond your years, human. If what I told you has frightened you or has overloaded you I understand. Take some time to process this.

[Arthur shakes a little. He has to think of something to say but the words die in his throat.]

...I'm scared of a lot of things but...you could hurt me. You haven't. ...Are you going to? [He gains the courage to look up at the mutant.]
