The Lap Pillow Meme

From TV Tropes: A good way to show the physical intimacy and trust which a couple have is to rest one's head on the other's lap. Usually, the man does the resting while the woman provides the lap, not only because of anatomical reasons but because the lap-owner is typically of a nurturing nature more associated with femininity. Bonus points if she's feeding him grapes or stroking his hair. In some cases this is done between people who are not necessarily lovers, to comfort someone who is weeping or injured.

Or, in the case of the meme: screw the rules, we'll do anything. Maybe they're tired and just found a good place to rest? Maybe both parties were asleep? Hard to tell. All we know is, someone's head is going to be on another person's lap. Shenanigans will ensue.

It should go without saying that Jack is unlikely to let himself be in this vulnerable of a position with...just about anyone else. Perhaps once it would have been a little more common back when he didn't carry disillusionment like a banner. With Michelle, maybe, or even his mother. With the first girl he'd ever 'dated' back in his school years. It had felt like rebellion then, her family not being good enough for the Benjamins according to his parents. But even then he was going through the motions of what was expected of him, hadn't quite realized it wasn't supposed to feel like that until the son of some ambassador came to some state dinner and Jack had felt a flash of sudden hot interest burn through his body and quick on its heels came the shame of understanding something about himself. He was flawed and his parents, his father, could never know.

The girl didn't understand why he suddenly told her he didn't want to see her anymore. But he'd let down his guard with her--hadn't had a guard, not really--in ways he never could again. His parents were glad to see he was 'growing more responsible' right up until he started going to the parties. That, at least, had given them something else to focus on. A sort of understandable flaw. Something expected.

This here, resting with his head pillowed in Declán's lap is nothing like that. It feels a little like rebellion too if in quieter fashion. Quiet because he can let his eyes half-close and breathing slow. Quiet the way he likes Declán's fingers in his hair and they don't have to say anything at all and the silence between them doesn't feel like a void.

Jack doesn't focus too much on why it feels this way because some part of him suspects the answer will make him feel like he has to leave.

So instead he looks up at Declán's face through his lashes and offers up a crooked smile. "I'd apologize for being boring but I'm not feeling particularly sorry tonight."
