1. Love at First Sight...or, at least, Interest. Hey little mama, let me holla at you. 2. Gradual. Your interest in this person is growing after getting to know them. 3. Excitement and FREAKING OUT. Oh my gosh, there's absolutely nothing you'd rather do than spend time with this person you want everything to be perfect oh gosh oh gosh. 3. Hormonal. Girls are so weird but they look so nice. 4. BFF to BF Your friendship is becoming/has become more than that. 5. Secret Crush You can't let you liking the head cheerleader or the king's daughter get out. It would be a disaster. 6. What is this...Love Thing? I don't understand love. What is love, baby don't hurt me --- 7. Unacceptable Your brain is betraying you and making you have gross emotions towards that person. 8. You Totally Like [blank]. Everybody knows your little secret. Guess it's not a secret, then. 9. MY LIFE IS OVER. You embarrassed yourself, so clearly no one will ever love you ever again. 10. Grouchy. Or Stunted. Remember how I said not just silly kids can get crushes? This is for all the adults who are finally feeling that fluttery feeling in their chest. 11. Dumb Shows of Affection. You want to show how much you care. These thoughtful gestures can range from not-so-dumb (she likes cookies, I'll buy her one!) to really dumb (I'LL BUY HER A LIFETIME SUPPLY OF COOKIES). 12. Forbidden Attraction. Everyone knows exes are off-limits. It's, like, the first rule of feminism. Also included are siblings of best friends, best friends, and cute people in general. 13. Ridiculously Over the Top. SHMOOPY POOPY CUDDLE BEAR! All sorts of pet names and inappropriate PDA here. 14. Fluffy Moments. Not necessarily dates, but just hanging out and having fun together. 15. Confession. I REALLY LIKE YOU PLEASE GO OUT WITH ME I carved this rock with my bare hands for you. Or maybe something more subtle. 16. Unwitting Object of Affection. Usually an older party or someone completely uninvolved with this malarky, but crushes know no bounds. 17. Adorable Kisses. Please don't let me miss, please don't bump noses... 18. Sloppy Makeouts. Put on "Stairway to Heaven" and go to town. 19. Arguments. You jerk! Look what you've done! I never want to see you again. 20.First Time Obligatory smut option, touch a boob, etc. 21. ANYTHING ELSE
Basch took his duties very seriously and as captain of the guard he made a point to stay by the young king's side whenever his time allowed it. If not his best men were put to the task, but for now he was able and so. Here he was.
Most would say it was a boring job, standing watch while his majesty did nothing but read. Basch hardly minded, it might not be the most exciting, but it was still important. Though he's not been spoken to, Basch does catch the looks that the young king sends his way and he'll make a point to stand tall, turning towards him with apt attention.
"Majesty?" A query if only because he wanted to be sure there wasn't something he needed.
[No worries! Laurent's from a French-inspired Renaissance canon. Pre-gunpowder and clockworks. Just assume general non-magic fantasy world setting. Laurent's story is that he claims the throne despite a lot of political machinations and murder attempts from his uncle. Also there's rather a lot of heated gay flirting.]
Caught. Or, perhaps more accurately, his glances must have been getting obvious enough that Basch, always attentive, couldn't help but notice that there was something on his mind.
Laurent pushed the book aside, turning in his chair for a more indolent sprawl. His long legs hooked over one arm of the chair and he let his head fall against the back of the chair. It was a typical stance for him--the more alertly attentive Laurent was, the more idle his sprawl, projecting the image of a bored, spoiled prince. If you failed to notice the sharp intelligence in his eyes.
"I know I have to be here, Basch," Laurent said, casting an irritable glance toward the stack of books on the table. He didn't, of course, have to be here. A less-responsible monarch would have left this research to his advisors and simply trusted their word for it. Laurent worked himself constantly, tirelessly, spending every waking moment either in a council chamber, the library, or his study. The only occasional exception, when Laurent's impatience and irritation rose, was that he would go to a private space in the barracks, where only his personal guard might possibly see him, and drilled himself in combat for hours.
"But you? You'll never catch a wife if you're constantly babysitting me." There was a glint of challenge in Laurent's eyes, but his tone was light and gently teasing. He was friendlier with his guards and his servants than with any of his nobles and courtiers. Laurent made it his business to take an interest in the lives of his personal servants, and was quick to bestow favors or days off when personal troubles arose. He often counted on Basch to bring such things to his attention, or to quietly take care of it in his name. But as for Basch himself, Laurent knew so little. He knew the messy details of Basch's past, but nothing of Basch's cares for the present or the future.
"Or a husband? I've never asked your preference." It was customary, in Vere, to marry for the purpose of producing heirs and passing on the inheritance, and to take same-sex lovers on the side to prevent the risk of bastard children, but it was not uncommon for two men or two women to marry.
[Gay flirting is A+ and I'll keep the other things in mind as well.]
Basch was used to the almost lazy like manner in which his lord sat, who was he to judge him anyway? He was also used to him spending hours upon hours reading, keeping himself armed with plenty of knowledge, if not that it he practice with a blade. Something Basch was more than keen to help him with.
Yet that doesn't seem to be the concern right now, in fact Laurent seems to tire of books for the time being, focusing his attention on. Him. It catches him off guard a bit, why would the king be concerned about whether he takes a takes a partner or not? Surely he's much more important matters to consider than his captain's personal life. Basch clears his throat, as while his king might be teasing and trying to speak more plainly with him, he tends to err on the side of serious most of the time.
"Admittedly, Majesty, I have not considered a partner, as my priority is to the crown." His expression eases a little, almost a smile on his lips, "Babysitting the king is a task I cannot allow myself to be distracted from. By any means." And while Basch doesn't out right answer the question on preference, he leaves it open by saying 'partner'.
Laurent smiled a little in return, pleased by the slight playfulness in Basch's reply. "How do you cope with the loneliness? Or are you so devoted to your task that you do not feel such mundane emotions as us mere mortals?" His voice was warm and fond, wanting to ensure that his Captain's devotion was seen, appreciated, and rewarded appropriately. Laurent's loneliness was inevitable, but there was no reason for Basch to be condemned to the same.
"I'm thirsty, Basch. Call for some wine and refreshments." Laurent nodded to the door, trusting that it wouldn't take more than a moment, and that Basch wouldn't go far. They could continue their conversation with hardly an interruption, if conversation it was.
I apologize in advance for knowing nothing of this canon.
