Vampires have nests. But none of those have connections that can compare to the bond of a werewolf pack. You should know. You're part of one, either born a werewolf or turned. For humans, blood is thicker than water; for wolves, the pack is to the bone. Of course, with humans, romantic relationships can complicate closeness of other sorts. That's not the case with werewolf pairings, as they tend to grow out of natural pack dynamics and are viewed as just another facet of life. The only difference is that werewolves tend to treat relationships, even potential would-be-mates, with extreme seriousness. The VA group was wrapping up and Sam just finished with two or three stragglers with stories or questions and a couple just with some words of gratitude, which he was quick to deflect. He was only doing what he felt he had to do.

He came out into the hall to find Brigid manning the information table.

"Hey, thanks for coming again. It's Brigid, right?"

Not that he hasn't adjusted before. Was sort of necessary after a nasty night of teeth and a worse month after that before finding out— Suffice to say that he pays attention to kibble shares on NASDAQ now. Yeah. Bruce understands adjustment. It wasn't easy but he's made it this far on his own.

Once he got through the requisite disbelief, shock, the this can't be happening it's real life not some horror movie (and the pain, god, there had been a lot of that too), he had...managed. Best he could, at least. Not that there was much alternative. Research was almost therapeutic, something familiar even as he parsed out fact from fiction and began to structure his life around keeping his new condition a secret. Moved to a different town, read some how-tos on making your basement a bunker, fumbled his way through a half-dozen lessons without biting or killing anyone else and thank god for that. Made for a lonely life, maybe, but nobody caught him out, no one knew what kind of freak he was, and community college students weren't all awful. It was livable and that's all Bruce figured he could ask for.

Except apparently that's no longer an option.

Whether these other werewolves were here all along and let him alone until now, or they were newer to the area than even he is, or Bruce was just that good at covering his tracks— Doesn't matter now. They're here now and they presented him with the facts: any wolf in the city limits and a bit beyond were going to be part of this pack; any wolf having an issue with that arrangement could either leave or...

The one in charge had politely apologized for the wording but didn't retract anything. Logically, it made sense. Regulation was no bad thing if it could keep some other hapless grad student on a camping trip from ending up in Bruce's boat, or at least offer a better safety net for those who did than the local library's fantasy section.

Less logically? Being in the middle of all this weird has Bruce breaking out in a sweat and he only realizes that it was probably glaringly obvious now that he's left the main group. He has no idea what comes next, feels like a stuttering tourist in the middle of a diplomatic summit. Everyone else moved like they belonged here and knew exactly what they had to do; all Bruce can think is please let me not insult anybody. At first, he'd just chalked it up to nerves but now he's sure some people are definitely whispering about him.

He can breathe a little easier now with— What, does he get a doggy big brother now or did this guy just draw the short straw babysitting the new guy? Hell if he knows. ]
