Matt has already pretty much dismissed the weird phone call with the guy claiming to some kind of consenting-victims-only vampire (he's not even sure how that's supposed to work, to be honest), along with the challenge he threw down. The guy isn't going to actually travel across the country just to claim a drink from a wrong number. Or prove his oral fetish isn't the product of some kind of delusion.

So he isn't listening specifically for anyone like that as he heads out to walk home from the office after a long day at the courthouse and almost as many hours of research and writing. The dark makes no difference to him, but it's chilly, which spurs him to take a couple shortcuts the typical innocent citizen might prefer to avoid. The lack of any heartbeats bigger than a rat signals to Matt that he's in the clear, though, which is why it's so disturbing to suddenly realize that he hears footsteps.

More than just footsteps, once he focuses. There's the creak of leather, the soft slide of moving fabric. Smells, too -- the aforementioned leather, cigarette smoke, some kind of hair product. But no breath, no heartbeat, like a mannequin is making its way down the alley toward him. Slowing his own steps, he crouches down and bends his head as if to tie his shoe, quietly folding his cane. He's encountered people who could regulate their lungs and heart once before. If this is one of them, one of Nobu's... he'll be damned if he's letting them get the jump on him.

Pushing aside the distraction of that missing heartbeat, he concentrates on what his senses are telling him. Tracks the rustle of movement and the scent of tobacco as they grow stronger. And when it's almost on top of him, lashes out with a club toward where he estimates the knee should be, then rising to his feet to rush the stranger toward the wall of the building beside them.

"What do you want?"

As the others dispersed to tend to their various duties, he turned to follow Shiro into the hallway beyond. A moment later, he grabs Shiro by the arm and shoves him roughly against the wall, glaring.]

[ As far as evenings of teetotaling debauchery go, Prompto's taking to his first drink outside of Insomnia horrifically. Crashing with Noct at parties that boasted a fair amount of underage drinking was all well and good, but Ignis was always there to pick up the slack when they'd wheel back supporting each other with all the weight of assumed propriety, or whatever pretense they could manage while slipping into the confines of the car and doing his damnedest not to puke all over the vehicle's expensive upholstery in the process. Prompto happened to fail once, but he's mostly been able to keep himself in-check, never drinking enough to warrant a concussion or something equally severe.

Since his reputation precedes him for a reason, Prompto can't be too miffed when Noctis spills the beans on his inability to hold his own when drinking. That's an inevitability he would've had to face and reconcile himself with at one point, and it's not like the prince is all that better at keeping his brain-to-mouth filter in place while chugging down his approximate weight in alcohol.

But what started as a few jabs from his friends regarding his status as a notorious lightweight ended with him imbibing far too many spirits. Several, several shots later, they're all piss-drunk, but Prompto's the only one incapable of holding his liquor or his words, wheeling around on a few targets of his choice. He's already gone and accosted both Specs and Noct with a tirade involving a few insults (mixed in with a fair share of compliments) and mostly incoherent gibberish concerning his vehement desire to visit the chocobo post right this minute.

When he turns to Gladio, though, it's only to shove him up against the nearest wall and verbally assault him with some weird anecdote about being able to fly the coop and be free, or whatever the hell that means in the context of way too many drinks. It's uncertain if Prompto's a mean drunk, or just that salty over his menagerie of emotional hang-ups, but it's not something he keeps to himself now while he jabs a finger at Gladio's chin. ]

Aaaaand another thing. You're kinda' mean sometimes, but that's— that's okay, you s-sonuvabitch. [ what the fuck is he even referring to at this point, prompto doesn't even remember his own name right now ] You could be a little nicer, though. Like, if you're going off with girls all the time, you could take me along. I could be your wingman. I'm great with chicks. I think. No ... no, I a-am.

[ Noctis helped him woo (read: reluctantly spoon-fed him compliments) Cindy that one time, and Aranea didn't seem to completely hate his guts, so obviously he's the perfect for these kinds of sexually-charged outings Gladio supposedly goes on. Never mind that the only indication he has that anything like this is transpiring is that one offhanded comment Noctis made as they parted ways with Aranea. If only the prince could've seen how the tides would turn, and the tables would table, perhaps he would've held his tongue, but alas. It's too late now. The damage is done, perhaps irreversibly (dumbly) scalded into Prompto's psyche as he transfixes Gladio with a decidedly mopey stare. ]
