Most societies have certain mores that are unspoken rules; humanity itself even has such conventions, grilled subconsciously into our minds for our own safety. Don't go out alone at night. Society's rules tend to be more variable, though they apply to most aspects of life - including sex. Composure in the face of difficulty was part and parcel of working for Stark Industries. She played her part beautifully, and there was little reason for anyone to suspect anything was amiss. The company was doing well, and despite her and Tony's recent split, Pepper seemed to be coping well. At least on the surface.

A lot of things had to change. She'd moved out, naturally, and she could be forgiven for seeming a little distracted with the sudden upheaval. And with her return to her new penthouse a brief crack showed in her composure, hesitating for the smallest of seconds before letting herself in. He was waiting.

Kilgrave spared the smallest of glances to Pepper as she came in, before his attention went back to his phone. "How was work, dear?"

There was a soccer game playing on the big screen, although he didn't seem to be paying attention to that much, either.

He was much more interested in the photos of Jessica he had been collecting on his phone, rubbing his chin as he swiped through them one at a time.

"Spectacular," she answered stiffly, not sure Kilgrave really cared what she said, so long as she answered. He was far too engrossed with that phone of his.

"Who's winning?" she prompted with a nod towards the screen. Was he even watching? She'd never been able to get close enough to figure out what exactly he had on his phone that was so consuming.

If Kilgrave could be accused of any sort of sentiment it might be argued that he'd collected Pietro out of some sort of tie to his past. Both had gained their powers through painful experimentation, though Maximoff had least given his consent. It was far more likely though that he had just seized on an opportunity to pray another powered individual.

The whole world thought he was dead after all, thanks in part to a few words from Kilgrave. He was a tricky one though, and it required careful timing to make sure he didn't regain unbidden use of his speed, or he'd be gone before Kilgrave could give the order to stop.

A challenge was always fun.

Kilgrave wasn't concerned about Pietro outrunning the compulsion. It was based on time, not mileage, and he was very good about coming up with contingencies.

The ultimate contingency was of course the promise that if Pietro betrayed him or ran away, he knew exactly where his sister was and she was such a beauty. He had a new picture of her whenever the subject was brought up just to ensure Pietro that he had access to her whenever he wished. He would have loved to add her to his collection, in fact, but consistent twice-a-day access to an Avenger was a bit more trouble than he wanted to kick up, so for now she was left be. As long as Pietro obeyed.

At the moment he was impatiently waiting on the street for his coffee. It had been over ten seconds, what was taking so long?

Wanda was of course the perfect tool to keep Pietro in line. Even without the compulsion he would have done anything to keep her safe. Even if it meant she thought he was dead.

He appeared in a short rush, coffee in hand, seemingly appearing out of nowhere but for the faint streak of blue he left in his wake.

"Is hot," he cautioned, offering the steaming cup.

It was sheer luck that she'd gotten caught up in Kilgrave's web. He didn't know what she was, not then. She'd been his toy, his little puppet, and he'd left her with instructions to meet him the next day. She couldn't fight the hold it had over her, her every being needed to return, but it was with a different face that she sat waiting for him, preying to be over looked so that she could escape whatever it was that was going on. And maybe put a bullet between his eyes for everything he'd done.

Her powers were supposed to negate mind control, but Kilgrave, he worked differently than the others. She was vulnerable. It was an unfamiliar feeling for her.

Kilgrave did not like being stood up, especially since it pretty much never happened to him. It was honestly supposed to be impossible.

He pulls out his phone and calls her- getting her number was just one of any number of things he tended to do to hedge his bets. She was within physical range of him, so it didn't really matter how she heard his voice, it would work all the same.

"Where are you?"

The buzzing of the phone made her chest clench, and Mystique moved to answer it as casually as she could, trying to keep him from picking her out as the one he was looking for.

"...I'm here," she answered, voice quiet, and as much as she wanted to check she avoided looking his way. She was a whole other person as far as he was concerned. She even looked around as though she was looking for someone herself.
