He's quite aware that his husband can't listen to music to save his life. It's one of the many funny little quirks about the man that he adores.

It's just that, when he hears a song on the radio that sums up his feelings for his husband, he can't help but want to share it. Does it in the best way he knows how-- by printing off a copy of the lyrics and swinging by the hospital to leave it with Barbara for Horatio to retrieve whenever he finally has a free moment.

The message he leaves with the copy of the song is short and sweet.

Heard this on the radio and felt like if we weren't married already it'd be perfect for the two of us, so I wanted to show it to you in a way you'd actually appreciate. Can't wait to see you when you get home.

He doesn't mind the music that garbles out in the odd lobby or piped into an elevator. He can tune out well enough the radio buzzing in the kitchen. He can even grit his teeth through musical numbers a few nights in a row for love of the man he'd married.

There's nonetheless something oddly thrilling in seeing the print-out and reading the note. Horatio isn't sure there's anything that ever sits quite so wonderfully as the genuine certainty of being understood--being known even in the odd little ways that rarely came to bear on daily life.

Searching on his phone in the odd stolen moments he finds through the day isn't entirely easy, but very little worthwhile in life is. Still, it's rather late in the day when he gets an email properly shot off to his husband.

I love you.

I'll be home soon.

He can't help the bright happiness when he sees the email on his phone. He can't help but find a Youtube video for his own sake, just to listen to it properly.

The email he sends back to his husband is just as brief but fond.

It always takes a while to respond. With any luck, Archie will nonetheless be able to imagine the tiny twist at the corner of his husband's lips when he glances at his phone to confirm the sender; the little spring in his step until he can find a moment to check properly.

The lyrics take only a moment to scroll through as he grabs himself a drink of water. The grinning absolutely doesn't stop.

They can both be grinning, then, as Archie starts to head back home and Horatio does his work. They can both be entirely happy as they approach the end of the day.

They're getting better. There's no doubt they're getting better, since talking. The edges to Archie's smile aren't nearly so sharp. It gets clearer every day, really, that he's quite happy with the way their relationship stands.

It doesn't change the fact that things used to hurt. It doesn't change the fact that Archie had kept a lot of that hurt to himself.

His iTunes has a small collection of music. There are two playlists dedicated to Horatio. There's one he's actively shown his boyfriend and recommended the other young man take a look at so he can look the lyrics up later.

There's another he's forgotten to delete, from before they were dating and when things were still a quiet ache, whose song listens are almost even with if not more than the ones on the happier playlist. He doesn't mean for Horatio to ever find it.

That doesn't mean it isn't easy for Horatio to actually stumble upon. Whether the young man follows up on the actual words to the song is rather up to him.

They're getting better. He knows they're getting better. He feels it in his gut, and he sees it in the slow brightening of the man he loves.

He just means to be printing a few documents off Archie's computer. iTunes is sitting open while he sends the pages off. Maybe it would be nice to grab another set of lyrics; to come home tonight with questions and thoughts and excitement about the words behind the songs that move his boyfriend.

The lists do look nearly the same with only a casual glance. Grabbing the first name before he grabs his print-outs doesn't send up any red flags.

Pouring over the lyrics of 'Over You' on his phone when he sits down at work sends up several.

He won't be home for hours. He can't sit here and pretend that everything's fine. The middle ground has to be shooting off a text and keeping his phone on his desk, fingers nervously tapping at the home button again and again in case he's missed the buzz of a reply.

Getting the text is a little bit surprising. Is easy, for Archie, to attribute to Horatio's general anxiety rather than anything in particular. It feels, after all, like just another step in Horatio making sure that he's being present and checking in on his boyfriend in a way he hadn't been.

It's nice. It's got him smiling at his phone and responding as soon as he sees it.

We're okay, babe. <3 Getting better than just okay, even.

It just doesn't explain the broken-hearted words attached to his name on Archie's computer.
