I TRY TO CHANGE BUT I JUST STAY THE SAME
![]() ONE SMALL CHANGE MEME Everything is set in stone. ... Right? Fate is fate, there's no way to change anything. Maybe. But in another world, maybe something is different. Maybe someone that was evil isn't. Maybe the directive of a group has altered just slightly. Maybe, maybe, maybe. This isn't about choice so much as existence: things have always been this way. You don't know anything different. An AU, maybe, but on the smallest scale. What does this tiny change do to the whole world? Is it the butterfly effect? Does not much change at all? It's something to think about. |

ok here we go
I'm telling you, you may have to deal with old-fashioned, dull-thinking career politicians, but children.. [ he's in their kitchen, seated at the table with books and papers spread across the length of it. on the stove, a pot stirs itself. albus isn't much of a cook, but as most of his family's money goes toward keeping ariana and aberforth housed and safe and in relative comfort, he's been making an effort to learn. it occasionally has mixed results, and today dinner smells.. interesting.
he marks something on one of his students' essays, frown intensifying for a moment before he sets his quill down and turn in his seat, folding his arm over the back with an arch glance. ] I don't recall being as damnably sneaky as some of my first years. I hope you've had less nonsense happen to you today.
yayayayaya
It had settled things just enough.
Now things are settled if nothing else. He's a bit of an upstart in the Ministry - an anomaly, being a German that attended Durmstrang. His vetting had passed by all right though, and living with Albus is comfortable in a way he'd not anticipated. ]
Are you implying that children are worse than staid old wizards frightened to so much look at suggestions of change? At least children are malleable, Albus. [ It's good-natured though, companionable as he walks across the small kitchen to where Albus is seated so that he can draw fingers through his hair slowly. ] You're plenty sneaky now, I'd believe you a sneaky first year. [ With a hum. ] The usual for me, unfortunately. An unchanging wheel turning, some of the department heads questioning my motives. Nothing I'm not used to. Nothing I can't handle, either. [ He remains there but waves his hand idly toward the table, whereupon said papers and books settle themselves far more neatly. ] You weren't planning us to eat atop your work, I hope. [ A pregnant pause. ] What are we having?

Her brother had been easy to figure out. He was fast. Really fast. Fast enough to warrant SHIELD building highly secure cells for the both of them. He didn't like talking through a window, but for this, it was necessary. Some agents had already lost their minds and had to be contained after talking to her unguarded. An inch of bulletproof plexiglass seemed to have the desired nullification of her powers while the other agents recovered. This girl was dangerous, and Fitz could see that pretty clearly. He hadn't had the training that Ward or May had to overcome mental torture and coercion, but there were more pressing matters to attend to for them, and so he was stuck on Enhanced duty.
Truthfully, he was grateful for it. He'd heard tales of magic and otherworldly people from Coulson himself, but to actually be able to see someone who claimed she could manipulate people just by a word... It was fascinating. Curious, even. And he was nothing but curiosity.
"How does it work?" He tapped the tablet in his hand, ready to record an answer. "How did you get these abilities?"

For one thing, Edgeworth would have a very different little sister. She's sneaking up on him right now, and if he's not fast or attentive enough, he may just find himself enveloped in a big surprise hug from behind with hands full of Swiss rolls still in their packets.
But if he figures out her game quickly, she'll just fall flat on her face. :(]

"Is this him, soldier?"
"Yes."
"State his name."
"Steven Grant Rogers."
"Very good. To the chair."
She didn't argue. Didn't fight. They had kept her out for an intentionally long time this time, just so the conditioning would begin to fail. Confirmation. Anyone could look almost like the pictures that had circulated. Newspapers, film, covert shots - all well and good. But why trust reproductions when they happened to have a firsthand witness in their pockets?
They grabbed her arms, pulled her back, and she relaxed into the seat, her arms strapped down, mouthpiece shoved in place, and then the halo closed around her. It was agony, but the emptiness afterward was a sort of bliss. Once it was done, she sagged instead of sat, eyes unfocused but gazing up at the ceiling over them both.
Both. That was new. Slowly, she looked over at the other inhabitant. A doctor was taking the mouthpiece out of her mouth. She opened without thought, wondering instead in silence at a man with golden hair and skin that looked unhealthily pale. It was him she watched while a man nearby spoke the words that slipped her into a suggestible state and told her the new mission.
"When he wakes, he will not be a good soldier. You will help us make him into a good soldier. We have already begun the process. You will have to help him stay calm while we finish it. This is your history." And the story was told to her, woven to her with all details so it would convince the super soldier they had really wanted from the beginning.
They combed her hair. Dressed her well. Took the star off of her arm so it would pass for an advanced prosthetic. Once the backstory sank in, there was even a little light in her eyes when they left her in his hospital room to wait for his eyes to open.
