For some, the seclusion the school offers is what they need, but others can walk around the general populace unnoticed. Some humans are fearful of mutants, but others are more accepting. [ It's happening again.

One moment she had been drifting off to sleep, safe and sound in the warmth of her bed within Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, and the next, she was startled awake by the sound of her books rattling and shaking on their shelves, as well as the vibrations of her aforementioned bed underneath her. She sits up in a rush, her heart racing hummingbird-fast and the entirety of her body flushed hot with rosy warmth, and she feels herself tremble as she attempts to calm her mind, to set things at ease once more. It isn't working, and it's only then that flashes of her dreams come back to her - the very same ones that she's been having ever since she left London. She remembers being held down and pinned to the ground in the dark alleyway behind her family's home, she remembers screaming and thrashing and crying as she struggled to free herself, and most of all she remembers the way the blade of the knife had felt digging into her skin, carving the word freak into the delicate underside of her forearm. Even now she can feel the dull ache of it, the way it seems to throb right down to the bone, and despite the shower she had taken before bed, Hermione feels clammy and warm, and her breath escapes her parted lips in shallow, rapid puffs of air. She's only been here for about a month now, and yet she's still frustrated with her lack of progress - she's always excelled in absolutely everything in regards to schoolwork, but this is far different than anything she's ever done before, and just when she thinks she's finally on the verge of controlling her powers, all it takes is a single nightmare to completely sabotage everything that she's been struggling to do. She tries to calm her breathing the way she's been taught, to clear her mind as best as she can, but it's no use - even when she isn't halfway towards having a panic attack, her brain is working a mile a minute, and now certainly isn't an exception to that. She's just grateful the door to her bedroom has remained on its hinges - less than a fortnight ago, she had unconsciously torn it off and sent it flying out into the corridor.

Thinking about that isn't helping either, and Hermione begins to realize that hardly anything will. She won't be able to fall back asleep at this rate, and for once she's grateful that it's the weekend; she's never been one to drift off during class, but she's been nothing short of exhausted as of late, and she's starting to worry that it's about to become an inevitable circumstance. She's gotten nothing but perfect grades since her arrival at the X-Mansion, surpassing all of her peers with ease and excellence, and that's why it's so frustrating that the only thing that she's incapable of mastering is her own mind. Her weekly lessons with Professor Xavier help, of course, but she still feels as if she's progressing at an impossibly slow rate, even if he insists that that isn't the case, and she just wishes that there was something more that she could do. This isn't something that she can learn from a book (though she has tried), and perhaps that's what bothers Hermione most of all. With a shaky breath, she stands up from her bed, fumbling for her robe so that she can slip it on over her nightie, as well as her slippers that she's left near the door. She isn't supposed to be straying from her room at nighttime, but - she isn't going to be able to fall asleep anytime soon, and a hot cup of tea sounds just about as comforting as can be.

Very quietly, she tiptoes out of her room and down the hall, her eyes very wide as she looks both ways for any sign of a professor, or even one of her fellow students. She hasn't made very many friends thus far, and she has a feeling that her nighttime disturbances have something to do with it. She's a long way's away from home, and she misses her family an extraordinary amount, sometimes more than she can possibly bear. It's probably one of the reasons she enjoys her lessons with Professor Xavier as much as she does, despite the inherent frustration that they cause - his voice sounds like home, and perhaps that's also why he's able to soothe her ever-busy mind as effortlessly as he does. Hermione eventually manages to make her way into the kitchens, and she finds the kettle before filling it with water and turning it on; while she waits for it to boil, she plops a teabag into the nearest mug that she can find and prepares the milk and sugar - there. If she isn't going to sleep, she's going to learn, and she makes herself quite at home by the counter, opening up the weighty textbook she had taken with her and settling in for the next few hours.

So what if the remaining mugs are trembling imperceptibly in the cupboard, and the spices in the pantry seem to be shaking just the slightest bit? It's fine. Everything is fine. ]

[He had been a complete mess when he had shown up at the school. Clothes ragged and no shoes on his feet. Pale and thin, showing signs of being malnourished, not to talk about the cuts and bruises covering his body. All he had manage to do before passing out was to croak out a plea for help.

After recovering, he mostly kept to himself, tucked away in a corner or hiding somewhere outside, whenever someone got close to him he flinched and looked ready to panic, more so when it was an adult trying to get close to him. Whatever was wrong he refused to talk about. He did not talk much at all in all honesty.

Weeks past and still nothing had changed. He still kept quiet and got scared when people tried to get close to him. In fact people spooked him enough that he ventured outside because everyone else stayed inside due to the heavy rain out. The rain had already soaked him to the bone, the cold making him shiver, but he still made no move to get inside.]

So on a day when he's staying at his dad's house and his dad is at work late and Daniel is out hanging with friends, he makes a phone call.]
