That it was going poorly enough for John to actually acknowledge as such, was a sign of how sideways it had gone.

Really, for someone with a less distorted sense of what was "bad" to get a realistic scope of how tits-up it had just went, one would have to take whatever's John reaction was to something being this bad, and multiply by at least a dozen.

Translating from John's internal script, something like "it might have been going poorly" would sound, to a normal person, like blood-curdling inarticulate screams as they were consumed alive by something ancient and unknowable.

But she already knew all that about him.

So rather than split hairs about how objectively bad it was that a very hungry hellhound the size of a small car had just broken their summons circle, they worked the problem. At least he manages his usual sarcastic quips, refusing to let the creature or her smell his fear. ]

Look at the bright side, love. At least this thing'll help cull the rabbit population from the last time they got outta their cages, yeah?

Eliot’s birthday was fast approaching and Margo wanted to make the celebration perfect. She’d already settled on a first edition of The Great Gatsby as his present, something that she’d had to hunt down over a long period of time, but now it came time to smooth out the details of the party. There was one detail in particular that she couldn’t seem to finalize on her own – the charmed bottle of champagne reserved for the birthday boy himself.

The spell itself was easy enough. As Margo stared down at the sigil and words on the paper she knew exactly how to cast it. She’d seen it cast plenty of times and she’d had the finished product even more times than she could count, but there was a minor snag. This spell couldn’t be cast alone. It would take another person to charm the bottle of Dom Perignon sitting on the table in front of Margo and, given that her usual spell-casting partner was the person she intended to surprise, she needed to find someone else to finish the job.

Her gaze flitted around the main area of the house, trying to spot a suitable replacement for Eliot. Alice would have been her first choice because, face it, the girl was brilliant. Unfortunately, she wasn’t around. However, someone else was.

“Q!” Margo called to the figure sitting oblivious to her on the couch some feet away. “Get your ass over here. I need some help for something important.”
