NOT JUST A WEAPON You don't have delusions of grandeur. You've never been more than a pawn, a tool to be used by others. A hammer to wield, worth only the power to destroy and not much else. That was the reality you knew, at least, until this person looked at you and you alone. Not your usefulness, only you. They were the first to treat you like you weren't below everyone, like you belong - maybe by their side? Maybe that's a place where it's worth fighting to stay. Shanoa never knew anything besides being a weapon. Groomed by the Cult of Ecclesia, as she would've disdainfully named them, Shanoa was made to be a divine weapon against evil. She embraced the duty despite the secret wickedness of the order that made her.

Besides that, she was warm and kind and protective. She never once looked at Bucky as if he were less, not even when she thought he was an enemy and there was a fire alight in her frosty blue eyes. And then they were graced with proper introductions, courtesy of their mutual friend Captain Rogers. She took a keen interest in Bucky after that, and began seeking him out to learn more about him.

A few hellos later and Shanoa finds him with the news that she has a gift for him. "Excuse me, if you aren't busy, Bucky," it was frequently how she began conversation with him. "I have a gift for you." It's very much the brown box she extends toward him with both hands. A blue ribbon holds it sealed.

If he cares to open it, Bucky will find inside one handmade, fitted baseball cap. The stitching is good and it feels durable, but the lines are crooked in some places.

A AU where Howard finds him after the war?

[ She always knew he was far more than just a weapon.

He had made an impression on her during boot camp, and she had done her best not to let it show. In a way, she had wanted to tell him to leave. Just abandon the military, turn his back on the war, go back to America and wait it out like the other civilians. She knew, in her heart of hearts, that not a single one of them cared who Steve Rogers really was; just what Captain America could do for them.

She didn't just mourn the man she loved after he went into the ice. She mourned the man he could have been, the man who was more than a military weapon, more than the serum that he been injected into his veins.

When Howard called to let her know that Steve had been recovered in the ice, she had burst out of work without even a word to her colleagues. The SSR had recruited her after the war, but it hadn't taken her long to realize how little the efforts of the women during the war were really appreciated. All she had done to help win the war culminated into answering phones and delivering coffee. As the days passed in a blur, it began to sink in that she had been of no more use to anyone than Steve had been. They had all been used to achieve a greater good, perhaps; but now that their usefulness had faded, no one seemed to care what became of any of them.

Howard must have known it, too, which was why he had contacted Peggy and no one else. Steve was being kept in a private medical wing, under the watchful eye of Howard and a few trusted doctors. Peggy imagined "trusted" had a different definition to Stark than it did to her, but she also didn't particularly care. The only thing she cared about, in that moment, was the man lying in the hospital bed. ]

Steve?

[ Her voice came out unsteady, lacking all of the causal self-assurance that was Peggy Carter. She slid into the chair next to the bed, taking Steve's hand into hers. ]

He does as he's told: go into the next room, put a bullet in the head of the man who wants to be a bird. It can't be controlled, it's not an enhanced human like the Winter Soldier, and there's no more serum left to make him one. HYDRA does not take on risks or liabilities; put him down. And make it quick- he's killed enough technicians already.

Gun in hand, the Winter Soldier approaches his quarry, hears it banging and flapping around. A metal cage for an avian mutant. He'd prefer to shoot it from a distance, to take his time, line up a shot. But it cannot be allowed to escape into the open, so he must be trapped in close quarters with it.

The door shuts quickly behind him, with a heavy metal click. He lifts his eyes skyward, finds the thing, raises his gun, and squeezes the trigger. ]
