The Trapped Alone In Space Meme



Space transportation on luxury cruise-liners are more and more common these days, and the trip is usually simple. A couple hundred years in a cryogenic stasis, only to wake up a few weeks before the ship lands at your destination and have a nice vacation of it.

Except something's gone wrong. You wake up early, and you wake up alone. With a lifetime between you and your destination, how long will you last before you snap and drag someone else down with you? Or maybe your pod isn't the only one to malfunction, and now both of you are trapped in this miserable lot together.

Congratulations, passengers! You'll be spending a lifetime in the lap of luxury in the world's largest space-traveling tomb with just the two of you. Enjoy the trip.

It had taken a little while for the full weight of the situation to sink in after Jamie woke up.

Once he'd emerged from his artificially-induced coma he was extraordinarily light-headed - there were still liberal amounts of sedatives, paralytics and other types of drugs swimming through his bloodstream, and he drifted in a sort of quiet doze, just the other side of wakefulness, passively taking in the sensations of his environment. The air had that too-clean scent to it that suggested a hospital, plus a vaguely artificial tang he couldn't place; he could hear the quiet pulse of the life-support systems in his cryopod, the ambient hum of machinery in the chamber beyond, and nothing else. He had no idea where he was.

Over the course of the next hour or so (he guessed - it was hard to tell, honestly, and the cryo had completely shot his sense of time), as his head cleared and he remembered how his limbs worked, as he emerged from his pod and located some clothes and a tube of water to slake his thirst, it sunk in that he was well and truly alone here; there were no other passengers present, no medical staff, nothing. He'd forced himself to remain calm as he prowled the nearby corridors and living areas, searching for signs of life or just some clue as to where he was, and it wasn't until he'd come up completely empty that he let himself succumb to the first inklings of panic and despair. At a loss, he'd returned to the cryo bay where he'd awakened, to try to get his head together and come up with a plan of action. And maybe have himself a good cry.

And there, in the room's warm darkness, he spots a soft halo of light: the dim illumination of another opened pod. He approaches it anxiously, peering into the pod's interior as soon as he's close enough.

"Hey," he calls, in a voice raspy from long disuse. "Hey, are you awake?" Please say yes. Or grunt, or something.

Earth went strange. He didn't notice it until after getting bitten. Afterward, the oddities kept popping up and, after Jim was taken, Jack eventually started picking up jobs catching unusual beasts, creatures, and people. He was quite good at it and stayed under the radar. No one needed to know about the tiger, right? He made sure it had plenty of food and a safe place to romp. Trouble is, tigers don't really like rules. Fair enough, he hated rules too.

It was only a matter of time until he was tranq'ed and stuffed in a tube to be turned into an icicle waiting for god knows what. Figured that those he caught were being put something like a seed bank. After a meteor hit the Earth maybe they'd be the next to populate the planet. He could never be that lucky - always had to make his own luck with skill and determination.

If it's strange that their first trip together, outside of visiting family at Christmas, ends up being one that takes him billions of miles into space, Jon finds that he hardly has it in him to care. It was not quite what he had in mind when he'd agreed that they should see other places together -- he'd been thinking Rome, perhaps, or somewhere in the Caribbean before they started journeying in space -- but when Kara proposes it, he's not up to the task of disagreeing. For one, it's a proper journey, aboard a small space craft engineered thanks to the information within the archives that had been brought to Earth with Kara and Kent, something to be shared just between the two of them. She tells him nothing of where they're going, only that it's visit a planet called Sedanock and that every view is a spectacular one; Jon doesn't press for more information.

Two days they spend flying in the dark void of space; for those days, their world is a surprisingly comfortable metal shell and one another. The take off is, perhaps, the most interesting part -- seeing Earth from space is even more stunning that it appears in movies -- for after they've escaped gravity and bid his world farewell, they move at such speeds that the view outside the windows is one of black and white streaks and little else. It's stunning to be going so fast, but it loses any charm after an hour. The time flies by just as quickly as space itself appears to move around them, for they never lack for things to do with one another, and before he knows it, the ship is dropping in speed as it approaches their destination.

From space, Earth had appeared to be like a marble of swirling green and white and blue, a brilliant gem that had sparkled as the center of everything Jon had known; Sedanock is utterly different. With oceans like earth, much of it retains the shocking blue, but... there are large swathes of iridescence that cover the surface, colors that ripple from one to the other, changing with each moment. It's truly a gorgeous sight, the kind of natural beauty he would never have encountered anywhere on Earth. A giant smile spreads across his face as they begin their decent, his hand holding hers right up to the moment where everything goes wrong.

He would panic when, halfway down to the surface, the engine seems to sputter and their fall begins to gain speed, but Kara is by his side and there isn't anything she can't do; Jon looks at her and smiles, grateful the sun here is a yellow one and that the lighting installed in the ship is designed to keep her powers in tact. "Bring me down safe?"
