Little Steps

little steps No matter how much they care for the other person and want to be with them, some people simply can't dive head first into relationships. Little things that form intimacy and romance, little acts we take for granted - being close, holding hands, kissing, showing affection in public - they won't or can't do...at least not right off the bat. Something in their past, their experiences, their trauma, or even their personality holds them back. For both them and the person they're "dating," as it were, this can lead to a frustrating experience. Still, steps can be taken towards letting the walls fall down. Little, tiny steps, but those can mean the world all the same. The People One With the help of a partner, one person warms up. Two Both sides of this couple are learning how to be in a relationship and to be open. The Actions Talking → A relationship can't exist if there's not some communication, so either learn to use your words or become so close you can speak without them. Spending Time → Even such mundane occurrences as watching TV or cooking together is new ground. Touching → You might just find you enjoy reaching out and touching them. Kissing → Another kind of touch, when you think about it. Cuddling → ...at least they're warm and, hopefully, soft. Sleeping → You're at your absolute weakest when you're asleep. It shows trust to doze off around this person. Public Display → It's one thing to be in love in private, but showing you care in public is a different story. Kind Words → Three little words (more or less) are all it takes. Why, then, are they so hard to get out? Sex The ultimate stumbling block to some. To be laid blissfully bare is to truly let your guard down.

Walking her back to her temporary quarters was by no means an imposition and they fell into an easy pace. Guest accommodations happened to be on the same deck as the majority of the officers quarters. As they approached his own, he slowed further, looking thoughtful. "I don't suppose you'd want to join me for some peach cobbler. It ain't how Momma makes it but if you wash it down with some sweet iced tea, it's a passable second."

It was sweet of him to walk with her, and she enjoyed every second of it. Of all the people on the ship, he was the one she found it easiest to be herself with. She couldn't show him everything, of course, she didn't want to be a burden on him, but he was by far and large her best friend in this strange new universe she'd landed herself in.

"Everything always does taste better with sweet tea," she agreed with a bright smile. "I'd love to join you, sugar. You know I can't say no to dessert." Especially when it was something from home.

It was the least he could do after treating her wrist. And if he knew she was holding back out of fear of overburdening him, he'd give her hell. Wasn't that what close friends were for? Bend an ear and borrow a shoulder. When you couldn't hold yourself up, you could count of your friends to help.

Nobody had called him 'sugar' in a very long time. A pleasant heat flushed his cheeks and he smiled unabashedly. The doors to his quarters opened as he drew near but he stepped aside to let her in first, the way a gentleman would. "Welcome to my humble abode. Desserts available at any time."

The more she started to feel like her old self, the more Rogue found herself slipping back into her old ways of using terms of endearment or nicknames for everyone and flirting with every other breath. The latter was only just starting to come out around the good doctor, but if he was going to ply her with sweets, all bets were off.

And lord but he was adorable when he blushed.

Smiling mischievously as she moved past him into his quarters, she warned him, "Well, I hope you wear pajamas, sugar. It'll be your fault when I show up at your door in the middle of the night with a craving for chocolate."

[ It's not the first time Newt's fallen asleep in his case, but it's the first time he's left the case open for anyone to see (and in the Goldsteins' apartment, of all places). But the creatures have worn him out today, what with one of the Graphorns giving birth, and a Mooncalf catching a cold — it's all a bit much.

Which is why he can now be found slumped on a chair in his hut. His eyes had fallen shut almost as soon as he'd sat down, and he wasn't likely to rise any time soon. ]

[The first time he'd come to New York she hadn't known him or the impact he'd have. The second time he'd appeared had been expected. The third and current time had been a surprise. After bringing her the book there had been more letters but she hardly expected him to come back.

He'd surprised her by standing outside of their apartment building some days prior. Work, he said, but somehow he seemed to have found his place in the Goldstein apartment rather easily. At the moment the woman was looking for him.

Queenie said dinner was about ready but the man hadn't come out. Her sister busied herself with finishing up, so it was on Tina to go looking for him (Queenie always seemed to put her on Newt duty). She didn't expect to climb into the case to look for him among the many habitats to simply stumble into him sleeping.]

Oh. [Biting down on her lip, the woman glanced him over, the barest hints of an amused smile appearing, before tucking her hair behind her ear. She moved to grab the blanket from his cot and place it on him before turning to go look out of the shed--She knew the creatures had been harrowing lately. She contemplated going to check on them with a glance back at his sleeping form--

[ He's exhausted, but Newt never sleeps very deeply. These days, it's impossible — there are far too many creatures to take care of, and plenty of things happen to sick or injured beasts in the night. He sleeps when he can.

So it doesn't take long for Tina's (to her credit, very quiet) footsteps to penetrate his sleeping brain, and he stirs slightly, noticing the blanket draped over him. It hadn't been there before. Confused, and worried about which of his creatures must have woken him, he opens his eyes, turning to the door.

There's a figure there, slightly blurry, but it's obviously Tina, because by now her silhouette is strikingly familiar. And it relaxes him. Whether or not a creature is hurt, he trusts that she's taken care of it, or at least, she will. ]

Tina? Sorry, what time is it? I've been really busy with everyone today.
