(It would have happened sooner or later, Keith reasons. With all of the planets in the universe and all of the missions they ran, it wasn't shocking that it had finally come to this. Not everything was a battle, after all, and oftentimes they ran diplomatic missions in hopes of obtaining allies. Allura and Shiro both often took the helm in those interactions with everyone else falling in line behind.

So when Allura called Keith in one day along with Shiro to tell him that he would be taking her place as the second diplomatic voice, Keith was a bit surprised. He blinked at Allura and then at Shiro, and then back at Allura. Naturally, he had agreed to it, but with some inquiry. Allura didn't look sick or even tired, but it became perfectly clear what was going on during the span of a fifteen minute briefing. Long story short: they were going to an exclusively male-sex planet wherein the natives were known for their aggressive mating rituals and often took mates from other planets due to the prestige of having an exotic partner. Risking going in as anything other than an "un-mated" individual could end pretty badly. It would seem insulting if Shiro went in and showed zero interest in the natives, apparently.

Which lead to the part where Keith came in. Keith was trying to handle this as maturely as humanly possible but he knew where this was going and it became increasingly hard not to blush a little. Something that made him itch uncomfortably at his cheek. It made sense. It did. Lance was way too much of a girl-obsessed moron to pull off something like this, and Hunk would probably get way too nervous having to pretend to be in a relationship with anyone with so much pressure on. Keith figured that's why he had been chosen, anyway. He had never even gone on a date before let alone...

Behind him, Coran cleared his throat and offered to go if Keith wasn't comfortable with it. Keith blinked and instantly rejected the offer. No. He could do this. It would be fine. At least it was with Shiro. Pretending to be bonded with Shiro was honestly not the worst thing in the world. The embarrassment he felt was purely internalized.

With that, arrangements were made and they were to go down. Partake in a ceremony that would mark each other as mates in the eyes of the people so that no mistakes were made and then move on to spend a few days helping build connections. Seemed simple enough. The mated pairs on this planet usually got matching facial tattoos to show their bond, but obviously didn't expect for visiting foreigners to go through the same thing...But face painting was a close second.

Shiro and him hadn't talked about it much. There hadn't been much time. As they took a pod down to the planet, Keith finally decided that maybe a little bit of talking wouldn't be the worst idea. Diffuse his own discomfort before it could come to fruition in a bad way.)

(It wasn't intentional if anyone asked. It was a last resort: a survival tactic. That is what Keith religiously kept telling himself. They had found themselves on a planet of aliens who were roughly seven feet tall and looked suspiciously like legos when it had happened. There was no mouth, but they managed to talk in perfect English with what sounded like a German accent? Keith has no idea, but what he does know was that apparently humans were really aesthetically pleasing to them all. Like, really pleasing. They weren't a bad people, but they were definitely aggressive.

They had gone down in their usual group with Allura at the head for diplomatic reasons. Made sense, sure. What didn't make sense was when she suddenly barked out a loud laugh and hooked her arm around Shiro's abruptly and prattled on about oh, no, I'm married!

Keith stared forward. Because. What.

And then he stared at Lance, who just so happened to be right next to him because- what.

It took an hour of trying to help rebuild their ruined city for Keith to realize it. Pidge and Hunk had figured it out quicker and were off in a corner closer than they would be otherwise. Relationships. These flirtatious bricks were totally respectful of relationships. It also didn't seem to take much to convince them. Despite blocky shapes, they seemed to have the same sort of displays of romance as humans did. Made things easier. And seeing as literally everyone else was already smart enough to pair up- that left him with only one option: Lance.

Figures.

The legos were literally everywhere though, so he couldn't exactly sneak a message for Lance to play along. He just prayed to every known deity and then some that Lance would use his brain and get with the program. If worse came to worse, he could whisper to Lance. Play it off like he was...flirting with him. Keith has never flirted. Never even been in a relationship. But he did have good instincts and he was going to bank on that.

So. It was after a yellow lego had bumped giddily into his backside that Keith decided he needed to make it known that he was "taken". He saw Lance sitting a few feet away and glanced down at the blocks in his own hands. Apparently it was a phone? Or something? Easy to put together but it had been broken apart. Easy to work with. He slowly moves towards Lance, his face carefully blank (which actually just made him look a little pissed off) and he got right in front of Lance. Lance who was taking a break after helping get some building back up.

Keith proceeded to sit directly on Lance's lap. There was literally no where else to sit and like hell he was sitting on the dirty ass ground. He sat ramrod straight and very pointedly looked at the object in his hands, fussing with it, instead of looking at Lance's reaction.
