The war ends.

It's not something any of them really expected to happen. The war ends, the Project fizzles out and oh there's talk of courts mashall, but the court finds in their favour and somehow... somehow, they get honourably discharged. it's a bit of a shock, when all of them had been expecting so much worse, poised for things to go down in flames.

Sure, they didn't get off scott free. Wash has psych sessions arranged for what seems like the rest of his life, but they're free.

He's never been free before.

He's also never been to Earth before. He's staring at everything when he arrives at the spaceport. Even the air smells different to his little colony world which had always smelled faintly of metal. He makes it through security, collects his bags and searches for that familiar face.

[ It feels like he's been searching for a lifetime. Always one step behind, following intel that leaves him arriving just after North is gone. But he keeps trying, keeps searching for his friend, leaving breadcrumbs that he was there just in case North returns to a safehouse -- it's a slim chance but he has to do something. Something besides hope that someday he'll catch up.

He's visiting yet another possible location tonight, a district of old warehouses converted to apartments. Despite knowing there are people around it feels empty with the dim-lit streets and quiet buildings towering over him. It's late -- nearly 3, but he traveled a full day to get here in the hopes that moving fast would mean North's still around. Even with the Meta gone, they're not totally safe. There's always the chance that the remnants of Freelancer will come for them and their equipment and AIs, though it hasn't happened yet. At least there's no chatter, and no one's caught up to him, obvious as he's been. Stationary as he was, for awhile there.

York climbs the stairs of the building he'd pick to hide out in, the only sound in the stairwell the echo of his boots. What floor? What apartment? On a whim he goes for #7, the number of the room they'd shared back at Freelancer. Maybe North is nostalgic too. ]

There's no such thing as a good ending--not now, years after the world already turned. Not after losing Shawn and her stepmother, Dad and Beth, Glenn's family back in Michigan, and too many friends. (Comrades, maybe, brothers and sisters in arms. Everyone who falls into the category of family without the ease of a clear title.) It's easier, in more than one way, to count off who's still alive than to make ever-expanding lists of the dead.

But it could be worse. Even with Abraham's blood soaking into the ground and Daryl carried off God knows where, Maggie knows they got off lucky. Carl's still got both arms, Negan swung the bat at Glenn and stopped a fraction of an inch away from his forehead, and she hasn't passed out yet. The night went by with a dizzy, terrifying slowness that she got through breath by breath, gritting her teeth against spasms low in her belly when they came.

They're left in the grey light of early morning, silent but for the earliest birds and a breeze rustling the branches overhead. With awkward, sense-deadened legs, she staggers up from her knees and takes halting steps toward her husband, a hand out toward him.

[ Survival hadn't exactly been on the table, as far as Noctis knew. This jaunt to the capital was supposed to be a one way trip. Go in, find Ardyn, kill him and give up his life to save the day, bring light back to the world — Noctis had been... maybe not okay with it, but resigned, accepting. Ready to do his duty, since there was no other way. It was worth it. He'd had ten long years of crystal sleep, kept company only by Bahamut's thundering voice and the memories of everything he had to lose, to come to that conclusion. And he couldn't regret it, couldn't be angry. More than enough people had died for him, had died to give him a chance to set things right.

If this was what it took, then Noctis would do it.

Except it, dying, hadn't, apparently, been what it took. Noctis has no idea how or why — the last thing he remembers is sitting on the throne, telling his dad that he got it, to believe in him — but after that, it's a blur of harsh white light and Luna smiling, Ardyn smiling as he closed his eyes— His father's hand on his shoulder and warmth pouring through him, blooming in his chest, spreading, everything turning gold—

The last thing Noctis expects is to come stumbling out the throne room and take a nosedive right at Ignis's feet — he hadn't expected to be alive to do much of anything — but here he is, and that's exactly what he does. ]

Galen had almost forgotten what warmth and natural light were like; Yavin 4 had them in abundance - overabundance, as it turned out. Even in the depths of the ancient step pyramids, where the Rebellion had put together a makeshift cell block, the heat and jungle-humidity still found their way in.

Part of him had never expected to make it off Eadu; certainly, he'd never expected it to involve being reunited with his daughter, or being able to aid the rebellion in person. Now that they had him, he hadn't expected there to be any need for the Rebellion to send anyone on to Scarif, but yesterday, he'd found out that after he'd described the data vault there, a few of the troops had decided it was too dangerous to allow a thing like that to continue to exist, and they'd gone to destroy it. Miraculously, nearly all of them had returned.

Not only that, but they'd brought a prisoner with them.

Jyn hadn't taken part in the assault - she'd barely left his side since they'd been reunited, and he was more than grateful for it - and after the two of them joined the crowd gathering to gawk at Rogue One's return, he'd felt her flinch back against his side at the sight of the all-too-familiar white-caped figure in the assault team's midst. Galen knew the feeling; even when he leaned down to murmur in Jyn's ear, "It's okay, he can't hurt you now," his eyes had stayed fixed on Krennic.

However, he knew what had to be done now. As soon as the crowd had dispersed, he'd gone to find General Draven, to make sure he understood the full significance of who his prisoner was, despite knowing it wouldn't win him any points with the man, who was still suspicious of his motives and allegiance, to argue against the execution of the other person responsible for the Death Star.

He hadn't made any attempt to try to visit Krennic last night, knowing nothing productive would come of it; this morning, however, he'd received clearance to help with assessing how cooperative he'd be with interrogation. If there was anyone he might be likely to divulge something worthwhile to, it was Galen - and, even if he didn't mean to, it was still possible he'd say something that only Galen had the context to interpret as useful information.

As they approached the cell, Galen noted Krennic was sitting bolt upright on the bunk; his white uniform was streaked with dirt and soot, as were his hair and face, despite his evident efforts to clean them up, and his cape was in tatters. Galen could read the incandescent fury in every line of his body.

"Orson." It was fortunate Galen definitely was not the gloating type, or he might not have been able to restrain himself at the total reversal of their predicaments.
