Redemption Romance

Atonement is, in your eyes, a Sisyphean task. You'll never be able to redeem yourself, no matter if what you did was against your will and only allowed you to survive in a cruel world. Who could understand what you've done or think you could be forgiven when it comes to all your friends?

Certainly you never believed redemption, so far away already, could come in the form of a person...or a romantic relationship.

[ Elsa originally traveled to Insomnia in order to confront Ardyn, the man who had taken away day from the world and replaced it with an eternal night crawling with daemons.

Oh, it might have been a fool's errand to travel there alone, but with her incredible powers over snow and ice, she knew she could make it through to the throne room, at the very least. What Elsa didn't expect was a discussion rather than a fight.

She learned a great deal about the man's tortured life, what had led him to this point and what he was ultimately hoping to accomplish. Maybe he told her because he was impressed she made it this far. Who knew? Either way, Elsa found her heart aching with sympathy, whether well-placed or not.

Instead of fighting him or leaving, she found herself sticking around at the palace. Over time the two developed a friendly rapport; it seemed both of them were rather starved for friendly conversation and company. The first time they kissed had been rather sudden, to the point where Elsa wondered if it had been an accident or not.

But no- it happened again, and again.

Today she sits on the edge of the throne next to Ardyn, sighing softly as she observes the night sky through the opening in the wall. As much as she's become distracted with their little romance, one major issue still stands, glaring at them constantly. ]

Don't you ever miss the sun?

[ Ardyn did not find much different in how he felt with the world of darkness he had orchestrated. No, rather, in his reign the only bit of difference was that he had not much to do and he had grown significantly bored within the first few years he sat on his throne.

Many, many, years ago he would have thought it would have been different. He envisioned a great court, times of peace, a loving following. Instead he had darkness and mindless subjects that did little more than reign the territories he's given them freedom to do so.

Then the first visitor he's had that did not want to take anything from him but give to him had come and he clung to her like breath--he missed the companionship. Even if his last companions held little to no love for him he still had someone to talk to, to play with, to scheme against--

but not Elsa. No, she recognized in him something she could appreciate and even be attracted to. How strange, how undeserving. Yet, what made him sit the throne was not because he deserved it either, but because he desired it. Just as he had come to desire her. ]

What light would come fails in comparison to your brightness, my dear. [ Ah, it was so good to say as if he'd read it from a poetry book before him now to her. ] I miss not the sun and it's neglectful rays. In darkness I would have never come to see your light.. Elsa.

Clint sighed as he rolled over in bed and looked at his phone for the eighteenth time. Tasha was always supposed to text him a status update within 12 hours of the end of a mission. They could go for months without talking other than a simple thumbs up emoji, but it was enough of a connection to keep their partnership strong.

Tasha's mission was confirmed to be over 15 hours ago.

Status? he typed, then sent. She could have forgotten or lost her phone. It happened, right? Even if this last mission had been so classified he didn't even know about it.

Surely he'd hear back from her soon. They didn't hide from each other. Clint rolled over and tried to go to sleep.

A few hours later, after she was patched up by Medical, she goes back to her quarters, to find her phone with multiple texts from Barton.

She shook her head at the concern he had for her, but knew he was a softy deep down. She replied back to him:

Made it out in one piece. A bit bloody, but one piece.

Clint breathed a sigh of relief and quickly tapped out a reply: good. pizza tonight? and set down his phone, able to focus for the first time all day.

"If you're quite ready, Mr. Barton?" the SHIELD agent in charge of briefing him on his next mission (solo recon a week from now in Jordan--piece of cake) didn't seem amused. Maybe it was rude or unprofessional to text during a top-secret security briefing... Clint didn't care.

Clint leaned back in the uncomfortable government-issue office chair and grinned at the suit. "Carry on," he said with an expansive wave. "Everything is wonderful."

Nat smiles. She types: Yeah and beer? I know Medical won't want me drinking with pain killers but, fuck them. I want a cold beer.

She lies down on her bed, to get some rest and keep off her broken arm.
